Analysts predict tough times for Xbox 360 - Are they Wii, PS3 fanboys?

The Xbox 360 may currently be second in terms of sales figures for this generation’s console war, but various analysts have no come forward to condemn Microsoft, the console itself, and its chances of success. So the question is: Are they being honest, or are they just PS3 and Wii fanboys themselves?
As a writer here on Blorge I’m very used to being accused of being a fanboy for each console, and in my time I have been called a Sony fanboy, Nintendo fanboy, and shock horror even a Microsoft fanboy. It took me a while to recover from that one. But the big difference between me and these so-called analysts is that I’m not claiming to be an expert. I just report the news with a healthy dose of opinion.
According to Eurogamer, some industry analysts who were part of a panel speaking at the Nordic Game 2008 conference in Sweden last month ripped in to the Xbox 360, and completely dismissed Microsoft’s chances of doing well in this generation.
David Cole from DFC Intelligence said:
“When you look at an installed base basis, the Xbox 360’s going to come in third place when all’s said and done,”
“The concern I would have with a company like Microsoft is, one of these days they’re going to have to make a profit on this business otherwise why are they in it?”
“They will have to assess their position after this round, and clearly they were very committed to saying they were going to stick with this business through another console system. They haven’t really talked much beyond that and I know that really at some point they are going to have to figure out how they’re going to make money out of this business.”
“If you’re doing a first-person shooter title, you’re clearly going to want to be on Xbox 360, and that’s for years to come. [But] their efforts at marketing outside of the first-person shooter crowd have been disastrous,”
Nick Parker, who used to work for Sony, and who now runs Parker Consulting, as well as also being an analyst for Screen Digest stated:
“The trouble with Xbox 360 is it hasn’t managed to shake off this urban, irreverent adult male feel; so it hasn’t gained traction in the more casual gaming markets of mainland Europe such as France, Spain and Italy, where it’s stalled. And there are already rumours of Xbox 360 being delisted from certain retailers.”
“I think they started off badly with the Xbox itself: blood and breasts. This alienated it immediately to a lot of consumers around Europe, and they never got over that. The brand image never went away. And although Halo 3 is a big game, it just emphasises again what the Xbox is all about,”
“If you go talk to people in Seville, in Rome, they’re not interested in that. They’re much more casual gamers, they don’t want to have such competitive games.”
While there may be some truth in the opinions that these guys vent on a regular basis, the absolute belief they have that their own opinions count for more than anyone else’s becomes a joke when they decide to gang up on one company and one console and kick it while it’s down.
Michael Pachter, who is regarded as some kind of all-knowing, all-seeing God-like figure in some quarters has been proved wrong on many occasions, and so no doubt will these second string analysts.
So, are they just fanboys or paid lackeys hiding under a cover of being some sort of industry analyst?

I don’t really see the 360 as being “down” at the moment, the only sure thing right now is that the Wii has it pretty much wrapped up. Microsofts games division is seeing quarterly profits now, and with continued cost reduction of the console and improved reliability, I don’t see where they will fail. Third place does not mean failure in this gen, it just means a few million less consoles sold than number 2.

Actually Bourne, Apple did make a games console. It was the worst selling console of all time (40,000). It was called the Pippin. He does sound like a Sega fanboy. So I think you meant, you wish Apple would make a second games console. If it sells two hundred times the amount of the original… well that’s a regular failure. But if it sells a thousand times the original… watch out! That’s as much as the Super Nintendo!

If apple made a games console it’d be 5mm thick costing about £6500, with a nice ‘fisher price’ interface with more DRM than you could shake a stick at.

I understand their point, Sony has a great rep in europe for inovating and allowing the creative process to thrive along with quality and customer service. Microsofts is all about control, buying-out and underhand tactics, not to mention the poor quality of there products (including that OS). I had a PSone which broke out of waranty (about 3 years) and it was replaced for £20, a PS2 which had no problems and gave me my love for GTA and an xbox which bored me after about six months. For me Sony deserve the console market, if I want to play the best FPS’s in the best way I’ll upgrade my PC, if only I could choose my OS (a fully compatible one)…

well if microsoft rushed the xbox 360 and created it in 18 months, just because nobody was buying the original xbox even after halo 2.
i can see microsoft rushing the next xbox by next year, after all xbox 360 sales are in deep decline even with huge price drops like in UK, and the xbox 360 launch 4 years after the original xbox, so… 2005 + 4 = 2009
either way, if you have microsoft stocks, sell them NOW you wont get a better price in the future
by 2010 microsoft will be in bankruptcy, well maybe not, but their stocks will worth many times lower than today

The previous article said that the 360 was the most popular with Gen Y. I think i’d prefer to take the opinion of a mass poll conducted by Nielson than the opinion of a couple of guys who call themselves analysts. Hell, has Patcher got anything right yet???
These guys can say whatever they want, it doesn’t deter the fact that I am enjoying my 360, as are the majority of next gen users (I refuse the label Wii as next gen, it’s a last gen machine that was released along with the next gen machines with a motion sensor control).

I think these “experts” were talking about Europe only, but I could be mistaken.
MS came out with the 360 as soon as they did for two very good reasons:
1) They didn’t own the chip designes in the original Xbox, so they could never make a profit and compete with a $100 gamecube and a $129 PS2.
2) Developer support. Being first to market got them lots of 3rd party support they didn’t have with Xbox. By the time Xbox launched, Ps2 had a 20 million installed base (http://www.scei.co.jp/corporate/data/bizdataps2_e.html) and developers couldn’t be bothered with the low install base newcomer.
Wii is ruling the hardware sales, but 3rd party software sales are ruled by Xbox 360. If MS hadn’t messed up with RRoD, they would have much more sales than they do, and they could cut the price instead of trying to earn back that $1 billion repair bill.
Despite what Sony says, MS hasn’t “fired all of their bullets” when it comes to games. They have a great lineup, with great exclusives, for this year. I do agree that they haven’t gotten rid of their “FPS console” tag, but that’s in the minds of fewer and fewer people.
I also felt that going after the Japanese market instead of Europe was a dumb move. Japanese just don’t like most Western games.
What Ms has done right, and it will be the key to maintaining their game sales lead over Sony, is making a console that continues to give Sony’s ’super-computer’ fits AND make it easier to develop for. Many PS3’s sold are movie players and will never sell games. Developers watch these things.
Wii probably will win the hardware battle and will make Nintendo the biggest profits, but 3rd party support will drop off just like with GC.
Sony will sell lots of bluray movie players and game consoles at a tremendous loss, but most 3rd party developers wont spend the extra millions to unlock it’s hidden powers. Sony’s games division hasn’t lost just $3.4 billion in cash, they have pissed away billions of PS2 profits too. Sony has already lost.
MS will price cut 360, make tons of money with Xbox Live, and continue to attract 3rd party exclusives while selling the most software. Remeber, almost 80% of all PS2’s sold were bought AFTER the price dropped to under $200. 360 will get to that price point long before PS3 does.
Looks like Nintendo is the smartest of the bunch, while Sony spent 5 or 6 billion (and counting) to win the Bluray war and lose their console dominance.

I put it down to analysts and their fallibility and need for free publicity. They still haven’t recovered from the fact they were wrong about Nintendo, two years ago, when they predicted its death in this generation of consoles.
Anyway sensible predictions for the future gain no publicity for the company. Getting it wrong or right, doesn’t really matter, since there is no contract or cheque depending on the result, just free publicity.

let’s not forget a minor important fact that 80% of the previous gen consoles sold after the systems fell below $200. . . The Wii apparently doesn’t need to even worry about that figure . . . but the Xbox will be there much sooner than the Ps3.
Therefore to say that the xbox is toast, is a highly . . . well . . . stupid thing to say. The xbox will be $200 this christmas, while the PS3 still clocks in at $400 with firm signs from sony that they “aren’t interested in market share anymore, and only want to start recouping their capital. . . ” In other words kids, they ain’t lowering their prices any time soon.
And everyone let’s not forget what a power hog the PS3 is . . . $50 more than Xbox per year just to operate the thing. . .

I think I know where I want to be and it with the console that has the better games and the better online where I can actually find poeple to play with and that can be found only on the 360.

Lets face the facts: The 360 was to lucky to be the first of the new (now current) console generation and so they got some buyers. but the xbox is nothing more than an pc. the box is loud, eats ridiculous amounts of electricity and every third box must be repaired. the good xbox games can all be played much better (graphics and control) on a normal pc. the wii has much more and better exclusive games, the ps3 will get many good games in the next month.
ms has loose over 6 billion dollars with the xbox. and is still losing money.

This guy is obviously a fan boy, X-box 360 has the best games ever made hands down. Haze the was suppose to be the big Halo killer? ROFL. Although I do love the ps and the history of the business and all the great games it has made, I just see the future of the xbox 360. This is the hard core gamers machine. For the gaming competitors. 99% of Professional Gamers (players that have clans and play for money/respect ect.) have switched from the old dominator the PC. Again the game selection and bright graphics just blow the ps3 out of the water. The xbox 360’s online service is unmatched besides World of Warcrafts, witch you have to pay 10$ more a month the for LIVE and you can only play one game, so its not that fact that the price is to high. The ps3 has much darker graphics and most programmers cant even figure the machine out. Who wants to spend 40$ on a blue ray disk when soon Ill be streaming from net flix. I wont ever have to go to the movie store again.
For the Wii, it has caught the attention of the unmatured/Mario/Zelda/DK ECT fan boys. Most parents buy this for there kids because of the mild mild violent gaming content if any violence at all. Also for the price, is much more attractive. I do give them props on there technology, but come on Nintendo, give us more powerful hardware, not a supped up game cube with a motion controller. Zelda will forever be my all time favorite game.
In conclusion I am not a fan boy but I myself prefer the 360 over the other consoles. All are great companies. but the reason this guys a moron is because Microsoft is the richest company in the world, the will never die. And for you ps3 fan boys with your SICK Video game lineup? Yeah, yeah yeah. Hot exclusives like Lair, Heavenly Sword and Haze turned out craptacular, so don’t wet your pants with excitement just yet. MotorStorm failed to live up to it’s hype, Resistance couldn’t even match the first Halo, Home and a ton of other Sony ‘AAA’ titles are just vaporware.
HD gaming choice #1: A less expensive console that has the top exclusives and multi-platform titles that run at a better framerate and higher resolution. A free online service that offers thousands of movie rentals and inexpensive game downloads. $4 a month gets you the ability to play hundreds of online games, voice or video chat with friends across different titles, send invites, access all of this while playing a game along with dozens of other features the other guys only dream out loud about. RRoD is gone for most, but you still get a 3 year guarantee to protect you.
HD gaming choice #2: An expensive and power hungry console that plays movies better than it plays games and forces you to sit through PC-like installs with no real benifit. A console who’s poor design forces you to delete these 4 and 5 gig files to play the next game when it FINALLY releases. A console that sees game cancellations and delays because it forces developers to invest extra millions just to get the title running close to code for the ‘dying’ console. A console that sports one of the crappiest online services ever imagined and (thankfully) has very few online titles to torture yourself with.

wow youre right ronhoward, i choose your first option the ps3. although i don’t remember the ps3 getting RROD. helpbox please fix me has no good games out this year and is relying on the hype of GeOW 2. I hope you’ve actually played all of these ps3 games, and if you have i question why you’ve played so many when you feel the ps3 is crap. As for the online service, you have no valid point. The service is free which means no matter how good xbl is, it cant compare because a free service which provides everything its counterpart provides will always win if its free, its simply logic.
Also, the reason why sony delays some of its services (home) is because it wants to provide high quality products which wont get RROD and a 33% failure rate. I’d always prefer a lengthy wait for a quality product rather than the other way around. You’re right about the deleting 4-5 gig installs ,however sony designed the hard drive to be removable, and thus i’m in the process of buying a 320 gig hard drive for my ps3 compared to 120gb for 360 which cant be made any bigger.

RFoM had crap textures, and the gameplay wasn’t all that. Motorstorm wasn’t hyped with that fake E3 trailer? lol Bourne gets another trophy for stupidity.

harry sachz - is it me whose been brainwashed by sony? or has microsoft brainwashed you? the difference between 360 owners and ps3 owners is that 360 owners feel compelled to defend their console all the time and to nag at the ps3, whereas ps3 owners can accept the console has flaws and also have a life outside of consoles. Also i accept rfom was heavily flawed, textures were indeed crap and the gameplay was very linear, but it offered a decent storyline which is what insomniac are building on with the sequal. 60 players against each other online? god i cant wait.

the impending demise and doom of the xbox name has been predicted since before the original xbox even launched. so far, they’ve exceeded every one of those predictions. no reason to think they won’t continue the trend. and really…eurogamer? c’mon….
any big ticket toy that can create 40+ million gamers from NOTHING has to be doing something right.

I was trying to say that all those games did not turn out as predicted, and the 2005 demo was a sony ploy to get people pumped about graphics that wont happen, well maybe now after 3 years of making the game! I love the playstation brand, but the ps3 has totaly let me down. it is a blu ray player first and foremost, then gaming was the second agenda for it. right now, the best gaming experience for me is on 360. C&C: Red Alert 3 is currently on development hiatus for PS3, it’s still on track for PC and 360. Whether it will come off hiatus is anyone’s guess, I hope it does though. It looks great and it would be a shame for the PS3 guys to miss out.

@Winner, when Westwood was still around the loss on RA:3 would’ve been big (well ok, I’m getting it for PC anyways).
Now EA is running the show, not only did generals suck a fat one, so did thier last entry into the tiberium sun universe.
