Week in PS3: Metal Gear Solid 4 moves PS3s, Qore secret mini-game
This was a busy week for the PS3 with all kinds of news flying around. I wanted to recap everything that went on the PS3 this week here.
Qore:
Earlier Sony announced a new addition to the PSN store the digital e-zine Qore. The video on demand Qore is developed by Future US who recently inked a deal with Sony Computer Entertainment to publish Qore over the PSN.
Qore is suppose to bring exclusive content you would not be able to get on the PSN store or the Xbox Live Marketplace. The content could be in the form of demos, betas, interviews, previews, themes, wallpaper, and mini-games.
Qore Controversy:
There were some early concerns from fans that Qore would cause PSN to suffer regarding demos and release slower. PSN team member “amurphy” assured fans that would not be the case:

@reenigne
If you purchase Qore, you will have access to exclusive content that would not be available otherwise – it does not impact the availability of the great content found on PSN, nor does it change our free play model.
It makes sense considering the PSN team’s job is to ensure PSN members get the demos as soon as possible around the same time Xbox Live gets them.
It seem’s Qore Team’s objectives are to get exclusives not available anywhere else, even on Xbox Live.
Qore Impressions:
I had an opportunity to get my hands on Qore and check out its contents. The videos are hosted by Veronica Belmont of Mahalo Daily. This episode had exclusive interviews you won’t find anywhere else on: SOCOM, Starwars Forces Unleashed, Afro Samurai, Soulcalibur IV, and more.
Unlike general videos you find on the web, one difference I noticed the developers talk a lot more about how the games specifically take advantage of the PS3 more in detail.
In this episode of Qore you find a section for special downloads such as a free copy of Calling All Cars, SOCOM beta (when it becomes available), and downloadable themes.
Qore hidden mini-game: Death ORB
Also I knew there was suppose to be some sort of easter egg in Qore so I played around with it until I found a secret mini-game inside Qore called ‘Death Orb.’
You can get to this game by pressing the R2 button while in the menu screen of Qore.
This is a fun little game you can play by yourself or with another player. It’s a timed version of Pong where you bounce an orb and try to zap it back to the other player.
I was able to get 50 returns, lets see if you can beat my score.
Metal Gear Solid 4:
Metal Gear Solid 4 has been the talk of the town all week with Gametrailers doing a retrospective series for those who forgot the past story line or who are new to the game. Watch here.
Metal Gear Solid 4 PS3 bundle brings Amazon to their knees?
Upon the announcement Amazon would be carrying the PS3 Metal Gear Solid 3 Bundle with the dualshock3, and a free download of the game Pain, the fans flocked to the site and a little later after the product was listed the site came crashing down.
The site came back up a few hours later, and the sign the Metal Gear Solid 4 PS3 bundle was in fact sold out. However later the site started taking pre-orders on this product.
Once again the product is show as out of stock today. Also the PS3 bundle is listed as the number one bestseller in the video game section with a sold out sign. We haven’t seen a video game console move like this since the Wii.
Metal Gear Solid 4 Advertisement Galore:
Metal Gear Solid 4 TV spots have started rolling out since last night onto various channels. Up till recently it had been speculated Metal Gear would not have TV spots from what N’Gai said during the Gametrailers interview.
I even saw two TV spots between commercials on Spike and Scifi channel.
Kojima and Komani are also sponsoring Metal Gear Solid 4 launch event on June 11th where they will give out free stuff and signing for your Metal Gear game purchase.
If you live out in these areas head on out to get your games and PS3 bundles one day earlier and have them signed.

Hey, some really good stuff here. I particularly appreciated the link to the MGS Retrospective, as I keep forgetting to go watch it. Thanks for the reminder!

Qore better be worth it….
The MGS 4 bundle in Amazon was $900
NINE HUNDRED DOLLARS!!!
Meh..
June 8th, 2008
“Qore better be worth it…”
Why “better it be worth it”? If it’s not worth it you don’t part with your cash, simple as… it’s not like they’re forcing you to buy it.
June 8th, 2008
Just wondering, will Qoar come to england, and i’m getting civilization revolution, first then the following week i’ll pick up MGS4. $900 aint to bad over here thats about £450, when i first got my ps3 bk in march 07 i payed just under £500 for mine, games and an extra controller to boot.
June 8th, 2008
Yeah it’s $900 from the independent sellers on Amazon NOT Amazon… You can get it from Gamestop for $499… so nice try.
June 8th, 2008
Ooops… let me specify, $499 USD
June 8th, 2008
Chappas…
How will you know its worth it unless youve paid for it?? unless they give you like 1 month free subby…
Still $900 is a LOT just for one game and dualshock 3…
June 8th, 2008
wait a sec.. INDEPENDANT sellers???
whast the difference?? pardon my ignorance… I thought that Amazon was charging $900…
June 8th, 2008
DWH
Boy, you really are primitive.
Didn’t you see the “Available from these sellers” link in Amazon??
Its right under the name of the game. There are 3 independent sellers selling the game.
The real price is $500 for the Normal and $600 for the Special Edition.
Next time make sure you know what you are saying, don’t just blurt out watevr u feel like.
You are an ignorant idiot as well as a liar.
June 8th, 2008
no need to get all “holier than thou” hammy…
I said “pardon my ignorance”.. I just didnt pay attention.. I saw the $900 and closed the damn window
Hmm should I get Soulcalibur 4?? Tried to play 3 but couldnt play it properly… never was good at 1 vs 1 fighters… cept DBZ… what do you say hammy?

“Metal Gear Solid 4 TV spots have started rolling out since last night onto various channels.”
Just when I thought that corporate types had lost the plot, they suprise me again.
*sheds tear*
You are damn right you advertise this game!!!!
June 10th, 2008
i saw the tv add.. and in typical sony fashion they showed 1/2 second of gameplay with the rest showing cutscenes…. what a joke.
dwh – you’re asking us to pardon a LOT.
June 10th, 2008
Yeah..well that could be because most of the gameplay “IS” cut scenes.
But I’m not suggesting that I’m not buying it.
I’ve got the special edition pre-ordered. Too bad you 360 only owners won’t enjoy what could be one of the best titles of the year.
June 11th, 2008
hamburger – i don’t see how a game using more cutscenes than gameplay can be considered one of the best titles of the year. maybe it is on the ps3, since the game lineup is anemic, but to gamers (the guys who actually like GAMEPLAY) MGS looks weak.
June 11th, 2008
And thats why it has a 95 on metacritic, its weaksauce…
June 11th, 2008
one day left, cant wait. Kevin , just coz your jealous, if this was on the 360 you’d big it up so much that you’d probably explode.
June 11th, 2008
Actually, Kevin DOES like MGS and I’m sure he’ll play the new one at some point. He’d just never admit that to the jerks on this site that will rake him over the coals for it.
I don’t get why we can’t all be honest with ourselves.

‘MGS looks weak’.
Have you not seen it Kevin? Have you not? I’m sure you haven’t, you mustn’t of. NO, you couldn’t have seen it yet. Are you blind? Have you not seen it yet?
That is pretty much what you said again, and again, and again when I said that GeOW2 didn’t look THAT amazing.
MGS4 is that amazing though, pretty much all reviewers so far have said. Though we can’t put faith in reviewers, they could ALL be wrong…
Or Sony fan boys.
Or they could of been paid off.
Or it’s just genuinely really good.
I’ll find out tomorrow ( I think I know what it will be).
June 12th, 2008
royzy – yes. i’ve seen it. the entire thing looks like it was painted green and the textures (again) look blurry and subpar lighting compared to what geow II is bringing out. it looks nothing like the video that Kojima showed a year ago, that’s for sure.
arvis – mgs is so played out even Kojima is moving on to other pastures. it’s old, it’s tired, and it doesn’t have the clout you’d like it to have.
sw – give it time; those scores will reduce once the game is released and reviewed en masse.
it WAS a good franchise, but the world moved on. (some say to splinter cell). their time has passed.
June 12th, 2008
bourne – if this was on the 360, i’d rent it from blockbuster like i did with the mgs last gen on the xbox. you can be any mgs game in a weekend. after that, not much replay value. if gta didn’t move ps3, i doubt mgs will either. it doesn’t have the clout it needs to sell a sucker on paying $500 for one game.
June 12th, 2008
Kevin,
I take it back. You’re delusional.
-Arvis
June 12th, 2008
arvis – whatever you say. just speak up next time. it’s hard to hear you ps3 fanboys from so far back in last place.
maybe kojima is delusional too, since he’s the one saying this is the last mgs game he’s working on.
June 12th, 2008
Splinter Cell = shit. Why do people mention Splinter Cell, oh yeah, it’s because they only have a 360.
Old and tired? Have you played it Kev? I have been all evening, after getting back from work. The reviewers weren’t lying, I can tell you that.
Wake up and grow a pair Kevin. Then people on here (the internet) may give you a bit of credibility.
