Metal Gear Solid 4 released on PS3 – Will Xbox, Wii fall to Solid Snake?
Metal Gear Solid 4 is finally here, having been released at midnight last night. But will the long awaited final installment of Solid Snake’s story help sales of the Playstation 3 enough to allow it to catch up with the Xbox 360, and even start a run on the Wii’s incredible lead?
When Grand Theft Auto IV was released at the end of April, many analysts predicted that the PS3 and Xbox 360 exclusive would allow the two proper next-gen consoles to gain on the seemingly unbeatable last-gen Wii. Although the game sold in huge quantities, and did indeed prompt a slight rise in sales for both consoles, the Wii rode out the storm amazingly well, helped in part by the launch of Wii Fit just a few weeks later.
Now we have Metal Gear Solid 4 finally hitting the streets, a true PS3 exclusive, and a game cited to be able to prompt a massive rise in sales of hardware.
The game has received mainly favourable reviews around the world, with just a few gaming websites criticising the experience as being dragged out. I personally am not looking forward to the rumoured 90-minute cut scenes, but as good as the game may be, will it be enough to reverse the fortunes of Sony’s great hope, currently propping up the hardware sales charts?
I certainly think Metal Gear Solid 4 will help shift some consoles, with fans of the series needing to finally upgrade from their trusty PS2s to play the game. However, most loyal Sony fans will have surely already made the leap across if they were going to. If GTA 4 wasn’t enough to entice them across, will Metal Gear Solid 4 be enough to instead?
I think it will help that Metal Gear Solid 4 is just the first of a series of PS3 exclusives lined up, with Gran Turismo 5, Final Fantasy XIII, God Of War III, and many more still to come over the next year or so.
I can see there being a spike in the Playstation 3 hardware sales due to Metal Gear Solid 4, but I think the true test of whether Sony has blown it or not will come when the big games start stacking up in the library. If gamers don’t then take the PS3 to their hearts, the chances are they never will, and Nintendo will well and truly have this generation wrapped up… with a last-gen console.

The Wii is a last gen console so is still 100 million or so units behind the PS2. The PS3 has nothing to worry about now that the legions of adoring Sony fans are upgrading from the PS2 to the future of home entertainment the glorious PS3!!

I doubt 100 million PS2 owners are going to jump to the PS3 within this year over MGS4. Most who had really wanted MGS4 probably already bought a PS3 way before.
At best PS3 will claim 2nd near the end of Xbox 360’s life.

I agree with you, in part. MGS 4 was THE biggest reason why I got my PS3 at launch but the PS3 has a lot more going for it than just ONE game just like the 360 has a lot more going for it than just Halo. I think MGS 4 will help sales but I don’t see it creating a huge increase but I do see a it contributing to sustained increased sales of the PS3. Bundling it with the 80GB was very smart of Sony
I’m a huge fantard of anything MGS and was pre-paid purchaser #4 at my local gamestop. So when I picked up my LE and (I never do this but I’m a sucker for hardback books) LE Strategy guide this morning, I noticed the “older” guys were the ones picking it up and Tommy was there with mom picking up the standard edition.
*Side note, I was surprised to see some really cute girls (frag doll quality) picking up their copies and I’m not talking about Jimmy sending his younger sister or girlfriend to pick up his copy. I got two girls numbers and PSN IDs and we formed a clan. PS3’s for pimps.* lolz

The only reason why i got the PS3 was because it has the best and the most exclusives plus is reliable and free service PSN. Blu-ray Disc was another reason. More PS2 owners will start upgrading to the PS# this year just watch how the PS# skyrockets in sales. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots Final Fantasy XIII SOCOM GT5 God of War Resistance 2 Killzone 2 OMG PS# has a great life.Xbox 360 is near death with just one game hyping it in order to sell Gears of War 2 wow shame. Xbox 360 will the next Dreamcast soon they got no talent at Microsoft for anything.

On a weekly basis PS3 mostly outpaces 360 a little. But if you look at the over all sales 360 its still in 2nd with both having the same basic angle.
Although I could be wrong & PS3 passes 360 in a year or 2.

i cant see the other consoles getting this without blu-ray. ive spent about an hour on it and im totally hooked, every time i take a break i want to keep playing, but the cut scenes are HUGE with lots of detail. I honestly cant see it being ported to a DVD as it would literally take 4 -5 dicks in space. I cant wait to get back playing it its so awesome.

I dont think one game will change much, it will certainly spike up PS3 sales, but I think Sony have got to start throwing money at developers to try and win exclusives, as much as I HATE that idea, its what them money whores at Microsoft are doing :/. I was a little worried when MS announced all those games from SE, I hope that FFXIII stays exclusive to PS3

I wouldn’t worry about SE. Releasing on 360 makes perfect sense business wise. SE is going to use US 360 sales to subsidize FF on PS3 and I have a hunch SE is also going to loading up BD (Blu-Ray) as well, pretty much ensuring any 360 port is going to be gimped or put on 2-3 disks.

God of War has announced that it’ll release early 2009 my friend. Only 7 months to go for launch of God of War. I got MGS4, now I’m waiting for my number 1 game Final Fantasy XIII and Versus XIII. Also my most devastating Xbox kill game is my 1 and only true to my heart is the remake of Final Fantasy VII, even it’ll cost me $200 just for FFVII so be it. I’ll pay at a very high price for the remake of FFVII. It’ll coming out next year guys, so please upgrade to PS3 and your hard drive prepare for it. Remake of FFVII is in the works now, the game is there it won’t take them long to port it over to PS3.

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots already moved a bunch of PS3 system it sold out the MGS4 Bundle.
God of War 3 is in development maybe 2009/2010
Final Fantasy XIII cannot be done on Xbox 360 plus so practically owns that series just like MGS. Xbox 360 just has one big exclusive Gears of War 2 own by Epic Games hyped by Microsoft. Sony has the best exclusives the best games and the best and the most developers with making hits after hits unlike Microsoft they just publish games from other companies because they have no talent or ideas of creating games what a joke. Xbox 360 is made up on one genre FPS while PS3 has all of them all types of genre. Check out Resistance 2 on GameTrailers the new video it looks sick and the graphics look jaw dropping PERFECT. Xbox 360 fanboys your console (RED LIGHT OF DEATH) soon will like Dreamcast gone for good.

360 has been out 18 months longer then the Playstation 3 and the Playstation 3 has outsold Xboxs in Europe already that shows that Playstation is consitently doing better then the Wii and the Xbox and thats also outselling them consistenly worldwide but hasnt outsold worldwide…alsoooo Metal Gear Solid 4 released 70,000 Playstation 3 bundles and sold each and everyone one of them. And thats not even including the PS3s sold independantly without the game to fans who want the game…Solid Snake has helped PS3 alot

mgs fan since i was like 9!
played all the games atleast a million times over
cant wait to get mgs4. But one problem. I have a ps3. So what do i do? sell the xbox and splash out another £100 to get a ps3 and get 1 game, and lose my 360 which all my friends seem to have.
Well its an easy choice. Keep the 360, stuff the ps3. the main reason the 360 is such a great seller is becasue everyone has it. And there is nothing better than playing a game with and against your friends. For christmass and throughout this year about 2 people i know have bought a ps3 and about 30 people a 360. so all this about the 360 turning out the same way as a dream cast is, well a load of SH*T! yeah i will say the ps3 is better than the 360. But unless you are very rich or are willing to save up for a while, and very few friends! you are going to get the 360. and one game cannot change that!
and well mgs looks amazing and im sure i will play it one day! but i would rather borrow it for a week when my friend is on holiday than leave all my mates on xbox for it! and im sure after i have finished mgs, that i will not be sad in seeing the behind of the ps3! because mgs is all it has.

Well i like PlayStation a little more but i own both consoles i buy any multiplaform game double no reason. But the reason i like the Xbox 360 is because i have a flash console to play backups. I love adore my PS3 because it has the games i desire and it has been out longer since 1998.
