Break-apart PS3 controller on way to rip off Nintendo Wii Remote?
There has been a sizeable amount of talk lately of how Sony and Microsoft are going to try to tap in to the casual gaming market so skillfully catered to by Nintendo’s latest two consoles, the Wii and DS. As well as intense speculation surrounding a new Wii Remote-style controller for the Xbox 360, there have been rumblings of the same for the PS3.
Way back in April, the first flimsy evidence of a motion sensing Xbox 360 controller emerged, with MTV even claiming to have pictures featuring the proposed design. While Microsoft has refused to comment, as they always do, the rumours have remained in the ether.
Then, at the beginning of June, it was reported that Sony had shown off a PS3mote to a focus group comprised of a number of invited Playstation 3 owners.
Now GI.biz claims to have inside knowledge of a new PS3 controller which breaks apart to then become two separate controllers, both of which contain an accelerometer, which would enable players to enjoy motion-sensing gaming.
The site doesn’t reveal its source or know when the controller will be released, although it guesses that this year’s E3 event could be the setting for an official unveiling. E3 is set to be held from July 15th to the 17th and could include big announcements from all three console manufacturers as well as various games developers.
It is believed that working units have already been supplied to certain developers, which would suggest that Sony want some games in the pipeline that utilize the controller before they officially announce it.
This is only a rumour at this point, but I would suggest that the chances of Sony and Microsoft working on some kind of device to add more casual-style gaming to their systems are high. Both companies are seeing Nintendo dominate this generation with a last-gen console purely because of the broad appeal of its machines.

PS3 wont get a WII mote that would be dumb,they alredy have motion in the ps3 controller,and they got the eye toy;not so popular YET but it will get popular.
the only people that can copy this is 360,wich is M$ and M$’ windows want there idea that was a copy cat crap too,almost everything from M$ is someone else’s idea.

Right im gonna try and make this clear to people who dont seem to understand that the word “generation” is a time measurement.
The wii’s internal hardware may not use as advanced stuff as the ps3 and 360 but its still very much in this generation because it was relaeased in the same time period as the ps3 and 360.
So if any of this generations systems are infact “last generation” it would be the 360 as it was released a year before.
So you deffinetely seem to give of a fanboy type of vibe as do most of the people who have commented on this entry.

I’m sorry, but eye-toy won’t get more popular then it currently is. As well as their current motion sensing in the sixaxis controller is relatively limited compared to that of the wii.

Maybe I’m reading it wrong, but it seems to me you completely contradicted yourself.
Finally, I’d like to say that Sony may be making a wii like controller, Its totally plausible that a company who has gone from being winner of the last generation by a significant margin, to being outsold by ratios of 3:1 and 4:1 every month. BUT until its confirmed it remains as a rumor, Personally I think it would alienate the kinds of people I have just quoted. Although there would still be a large proportion of gamers who would be quite happy with such a control system available to their PS3 and its games.

When I owned a PS1 I had a controller that broke apart. Mind you it was after it was thrown against the wall after being pissed off all too often with the camera on Ape Escape.

If sony do make one, I don’t think it’ll help them too much. Nintendo already has far too much of a base/following amongst the audience sony will be chasing by creating a wii style controller. As well as the wii already has accessories like a balance board amongst things not yet seen.

I own a ps3, but the only way to get my wife and child involved in playing games was the Wii. Face it, it’s a huge success, appealing to a much broader range of people than the PS3 or Xbox does.
Does it have the best graphics? No. However, it is the ultimate group-play device on the market.

As has been mentioned, the PS3 controller already does have motion sensing technology like the Wiimote – hence the name ‘SIXAXIS’, as in ’six axis of movement sensing’. The only thing missing from it is the infra red tracking to emulate a mouse. The PS3 can use a USB mouse (wireless available) if thats what you want, or if its a light gun you want you can use the new Guncon. Its much more accurate than the Wiimote too as it uses 6 LEDs for point of reference rather than the Wii’s 2 LEDs, and has two joysticks built in.

The ‘Eye-Toy’ has been out for a long time for the PS2 (6.7 million sold) but the PS3’s version is called the ‘Playstation Eye’. This is a big improvement with a higher resolution camera and a 3D microphone for detecting where sound is coming from so it can use software zooming to focus in on the source of a voice. A very clever piece of kit indeed.

@ PS3FanboysareLOL……….what i meant was…..the wii’s controller’s motion sensing isnt new……it was used for a gameboy game…..wario ware or something….anyway that technology is still present……and what i meant with the 360 is that the 360 doesnt have any features or tech that the ps3 and the wii have……motion sensing…..long story short= 360 is missing out on things that should of already been built in…..idk, its still confusing, but i hope i explained it better

@ Matt, have you ever played Wario Ware Twisted with the motion sensing? All it can pick up is tilting side to side while the Wiimote can pick up tilting in any direction, movement in any direction and can be used as a pointer. Saying that it is old technology because of Wario Ware on the GBA just doesn’t work because the Wiimote is ridiculously more advanced than that technology ever was.

PS3 are currently last in the console race.
They ripped off the xbox remote button in the middle of the control pad and also the wii’s motion sensor control.
Sony have no shame, I’d expect to see it on the shelves by Christmas.

The wii does have some good games, but I do feel its been under utilized a little when it comes more ’serious’ games. I havn’t played anything new since SSBB (MK Wii didn’t float my boat).
I really hope Sony doesn’t try to enter the whole motion arena…

The nintendo Wii is like NASCAR, like it or not, it’s not going away any time soon. PS3 tried to do too much with their console, Wii went for a minimalist approach, while the 360 made a half-hearted attempt for something in the middle. If you know basic economics, you’ll know that the Wii and the PS3 are not perfect substitutes; it’s similar to Mercedes and Honda, they both make cars, but they are not in the same class.

If Sony does come out with this it would be for 2 reasons. First, a family who wants to buy a console might go with the PS3 instead of the Wii so that the kids can play the motion games and the dad can play the AAA games. Second, it may prevent people with a PS3 from buying a Wii for their kids. I’m not saying it will start moving PS3’s faster than crack in the 80’s, but it may make a difference. That’s my opinion anyway.

how is the PS3 eyetoy all that different from the original, I haven’t actually looked into it. I just assumed they were basically the same. Either way my point still holds, the eye toy from playstation 2 was around for ages on a system that already had a huge install base, I don’t think it has the influence to sell systems by its own force, especially considering the PS3’s price and the type of people who would be compelled to buy a system due to one such feature.

I think its also good to note how previous console generations have sold.
Look at the N64 compared to PS3, which console was stronger? The N64. Nintendo went with a stronger console hardware wise after the success of the SNES, hoping its popularity will continue on through. It ended up being completely outsold by the playstation one.
Now compare the PS2 to the XBox and Gamecube. It could be quite easily argued that the PS2 was the weakest of all the systems, and it sold the most, continuing on what sony had started. (in very much the same way that the SNES had continued on what the NES had for nintendo) Then comes now, where sony decided it best to produce an absolute beast of a console which is superior to the other two, and how is it selling? not as well as Sony hoped. (in a sense mirroring what happened to the nintendo 64, where people moved to the playstation which offered cheaper games and a larger game library, as it was cheap to produce games for and easy to sell.
I don’t find it a surprise that the console which does very little to change the way games are played, but instead only offers stronger hardware (PS3 for those who didn’t catch on) to be doing less then what was expected. Thats not to say its doing bad, just not great. Whereas the console which is cheap, offers new interactivity for a wider audience, has been sold out for whats coming on to two years after its release.

Nintendo lives off of nostalgia. Every new console they put out has the same popular exclusives (Mario, Zelda, Metroid etc.) or some strange party game with all of the stars from their old hit games. They are pro’s at feeding you the same crap every 5 years.
