PS3 Trophies dated, could be better than Xbox 360’s Live

June 30, 2008

PS3 Trophies dated, could be better than Xbox 360's Live Sony on their blog just released a two part video demonstration of Firmware 2.40 and it looks to be one whopper of a firmware. Delivering what fans have been asking for in-game XMB, in-game custom tracks, in-game messaging and of course the long awaited Trophy system!

Not to long ago I speculated how the trophy leveling system works, and today Sony verified my suspicions to the letter. A tiered trophy system with multiple levels of trophies valued differently having different weight to how much you level up.

(More pictures and full details on how the trophy and leveling up system works)

According to a recent comment made by N’Gai Croal on Bonus Round on GameTrailers, he was told by Sony that their 2D component was more compelling then their 3D “Home” in so that they complemented each other seamlessly.

Many of you maybe scratching your heads, but this is surely a hint on how Sony will complement the leveling up aspect along with Trophies into Home.

ps3_home_1 This is further evidence on Sony’s plan on making Home very MMORPG like. Each user in Home will be able to see the other person’s level very much like a MMORPG, and instead of killing each other in Home to level up you beat the games you have in your library to level up.

Sony has even made it much more competitive by allowing easy comparison of trophies for games you and your buddies only have.

What does leveling give you in the virtual 3D world of Home you may ask? Wouldn’t it make sense the more you level up the more “items” you acquire for your Home avatar? Actually this was hinted at a while back during E3 when they showed an avatar with Ratchet & Clank clothing, no doubt from acquiring the platinum trophy from the game.

Some of you may wonder how will the ‘Trophy Room’ and trophy system. be integrated into Home? I suspect the trophy room will only contain the Platinum level trophies which you can only get after acquiring all the trophies in the game.

In comparison to what Xbox offers with Live, this looks to provide a scoring system that has much more depth then just a gamercard with a total score showing how much achievements you have unlocked. I can see how Sony is banking on the addictive nature of MMORPG, and how it will work the same way using leveling up and virtual 3D world with Home.

If everything is executed flawlessly you can bet it will be quite a feat of social engineering. Up to this point we had no clue on how Home and trophies would be integrated together and as E3 gets closer we can see hints as to how this will be implemented.

Not to make a pun, but once this firmware releases it will make Xbox Live look very two dimensional and PSN home three dimensional. With the PSN the score system will not just stop at the “trophy score” or “gamerscore” but extend into leveling up of your avatar all the way inside Home.

However, I highly doubt Microsoft will be sitting idly by as I suspect they are already working on their own version of a Mii-too avatar system as rumored. With no spring dashboard update, you can bet a huge update will be incoming soon…possibly announced at E3?

Two companies hard at work competing for my money? I think this can only benefits us the consumers.

You can find the official release date of Firmware 2.40 right on Sony’s Blog giving a July 2 date.

perhaps sony would consider it with the amount of losses they’re suffering… but i do hope not. I’d like to see how trophies and home combines, wonder if you could get a trophy cabinet at your apartment/home

Bourne – I believe the trophy cabinet thing was promised and in the Home videos (those seem so long ago) you can see examples I think (Im sure there was a killzone 2 one and maybe warhawk).

I don’t really know what to expect with the Trophies, I guess I’ll just have to see!

“could be better than xbox live?”… you do realize sony has been trying to match xbox live since 02, right? so far we’ve seen many, many promises of what “could be better” than the 360 and xbox live. Every single one has failed to meet expectations and people still choose to pay for xbox live rather than taking sony’s online for free. why? becuase you can eat free out of the trash can, but most would rather pay for a quality dinner in a restaurant. same principle. free does not make it better. only cheaper.
