Will Sony lower price of PS3 in response to Microsoft’s Xbox 360 price cut?
There have been rumors that the mid level Xbox 360 will receive a modest price cut of about $50. Today Microsoft announced Australia and New Zealand will receive a $50 price cut on the entry model Xbox 360 Arcade to $349.
This move seems to verify those rumors we have been hearing lately. However when CVG asked if this price cut will be coming to other territories the answer seems to indicate there maybe price drops coming to other areas but not all in the next 12-months.
Could this mean US, the biggest market will see a price drop of the mid level Xbox 360? We here at GAMER BLORGE, have certainly speculated a price war in the past, but this move could potentially hurt Sony and spur more Xbox 360 sales. Sony has already announced they do not plan on reducing the price of the PS3 recently.
With plans on breaking even on the PS3 by years end, a price cut would only further push this goals. Currently, in monthly sales both consoles are neck in neck but any shift in pricing or offering could potentially push sales to favor one or the other.
Video game industry analyst Michael Pachter describes the state of the industry it in an interview with Kotaku:
Consumers see two boxes with very similar game experiences, and have to decide if a 360 with a 20Gb HDD, no Internet adapter, a very well-thought out Live experience and an extraordinary game library is a better deal at $349 (or $299) than a PS3 with built-in Internet adapter, a 40Gb HDD, a Blu-ray disc drive, a weak online experience and a relatively thin library of games for $399,
Also according to Pachter currently in Europe the PS3 is favored over the Xbox 360 because they see it as having more value over the Xbox 360, but he quickly points out any change in pricing or feature strategy could put any of the territories in the swings.
It is yet to be seen what type of offerings Microsoft has planned to unveil at E3. There’s so many rumors and supposed leaks on the speculated new features Microsoft is working on to make up for the missed spring dashboard update.
There is a rumor Microsoft is bringing a Wii-like wand you could use to navigate the dashboard, and also a Mii-like Avatar system as well. However, will these features be enough to bring territories like Europe back to Microsoft’s camp or will it need something bigger like a Blu-ray add-on drive?
On the PS3 front, it does not look like they will be leveraging any price drops in the near future. However they will need to work extra hard in the content department to maintain it’s perception as a value added system over in Europe and also step up their game here in the US if they want to remain competitive this gen.

The PS3 seems to be more efficient and effective than the 360. Microsoft is only concerned about the profit of the company, not the profit or benefit of the consumer. Which in return, Sony seems to be well implementing.
They really wanted to engage consumers into a whole new experience called Blu Ray! But with Xbox 360, it’s just another video game console, that offers nothing original or inspirational. But the PS3 on the other hand is totally different from that.
So in the long run, unless the majority of people like being jipped down and served mediocre criteria, the Playstation 3 will win the console war. The Wii is almost the same as the 360 as in this category. The only thing the Wii offers is motion sensing, and below the par games that obviously people with self esteem issues like to buy.
The Wii offers no next generation graphics, sound, development, etc. It’s just a remix of the Gamecube……That’s all.

It is funny to see that I read a statement from EBgames (Australia) that said the lowered price for 360 is due to “flagging sales” and hey went on to say that PS3 was a clear 2 place getter and that price was not a huge issue to sales for PS3.
Before yoall get your knickers in a twist, this is just a statement from 1 games retailer with no “declared” stats. But interesting statement anyway.
I personally think that a consoles price will affect it’s potential sales rate, especially if it is greatly more expensive then the others. In saying that, I would say that sony will drop price to some extent, in the future.
If I remember correctly, each of the systems, all the way back to the psx were expensive in thier early days and came down in price in the coming years. Nothing will be different here.

Regardless if Microsoft cuts the price, people with enough logic sense will know that the better investment would be in the Playstation 3.
They could cut it down to $25 dollars here on out, and I bet still, that the Playstation will wind up on top due to quality and reliability. The demand of the PS3 will always be greater than the demand of Xbox 360.

@ Spideydog…….Yeah thats true, but the price of the Playstation 3 will never change the “demand” of the Playstation 3. Always remember that. Regardless of what the price is, people are still going to want a Playstation 3. It might take a while for them to save up but eventually they are going to buy a Playstation 3.

I would hate to be sony. Already losing 3.3 BILLION in 2 years, it’s major competitor dropping the price of it’s console, and cancelling or postponing games left, right and centre. Sony have 2 choices, sit there and do nothing, which will result in a decline in sales. Or they could drop prices and keep up in sales, but sink into an even deeper financial hole. It does suck to be them!

Sony don’t need to do anything. That $100 price difference is this years XBL and next years XBL, assuming you want to play online..
Then you have to think about what you DON’T get… no Blu-ray, no Wifi, only HDMI 1.2…
Now that featurewise PSN and XBL are pretty much the same featurewise, it’s the other factors people will look at.
Right now, you would have to be insane to buy a 360, even if it’s $299…

Im honestly confused. Havent sony like lost 3.3 billion on the ps3 and they released a statement saying that they may never re-cooperate their losses in the ps3’s life time. So how can the ps3 brake even by the end of this year.

1. Generation is a time measurement, no matter what you fanboys like to think the wii is well and truely next generation.
2. Its graphics are better than any last generation console, you are being decived by the wii’s shovel ware. These poor exscuse for video games developers do not spend alot of money devloping these games and do not implement decent graphics.
However when attention and care is taken on the wii it can pull of some pretty decent stuff, Mario galaxy and Metroid prime are good examples.
Treyarch released a statement that im pretty sure alot of you have read. They said that they also know that the wii is capable of alot more than people think and that the majority of its games do nothing to demonstrate the wii’s ability. These are the people working on COD 5 by the way. and yes the 360 and ps3 do have better graphics but you do seem to be seriously underestimating the wii.
3. It deppends what you want to “invest” in when you buy the ps3. If you intend to be watching High deffinition blu-ray movies then yes the ps3 is the better choice.
But in the matter of video games its completely different as the 360 has a far superior library of games and it looks like this is going to be a continueing trend.
If you are also interested in seriously gaming like the hardcore then you are going to want to play on xbox live not sony’s poor exscuse for an online service.
If you want to invest in things for the hardcore gamer then it deffinetely seems that the 360 is the best choice.

Harry, Sony may have lost 3.3b but that’s what MS has lost on the RRoD warrantee alone not to mention the loss on the original Xbox. MS has never turned a profit on their games division. Sony has made billions and are worth billions. They can afford to lose billions more until they turn the corner. MS has never turned the corner.

back on topic. sony can’t reduce the price. stockholders won’t stand for it. so far the ps3 has cost sony 3 billion in losses, the careers of Harrison and Kuturagi, and the loss of many SCE employed people. sony can’t sustain a cut so i think they may include a couple of free bluray movies (that they will conventiently count as “sales”) to sweeten the deal. too little, too late.

Bourne – you will have to wait for the patches before the in game music will work. Sony released the feature, but since it wasn’t available before the devs never put it in the games. I’m sure patches will be out soon, maybe, possibly, I don’t know ask Kev he knows everything.

blu-rays are the PS3’s main selling point. For the time being, people seem very content expanding their dvd collections, because dvds are very inexpensive. Once all movie studios distribute their content through blu-ray and blu-ray players reach more desirable price points, then will the PS3 be a truly better value than the xbox 360. But i guess it depends upon what you value; all in one media experience or gaming.
