Wii Fit boom over - Now Prepare for Wii Yoga utilising the Balance Board

By Dave Parrack

Wii Fit boom over - Now Prepare for Wii Yoga utilising the Balance BoardWii Fit has been out for almost two months in America now, but it has been out in Europe a little longer, and in Japan, the home of Nintendo, for over six months. Which means Japanese gamers are pretty much over their initial interest in following the daily regimen. But worry not Wii-owning fitness freaks, as Wii Yoga is on its way.

We all already knew that Nintendo is a genius company, as love or hate it, you have to admit that it knows what it is doing. Which is why it was able to release an underpowered next-gen console with crappy graphics, immediately make a profit and sell it in much bigger quantities than either the PS3 or Xbox 360.

It then did it again with Wii Fit, a game which taps in to the insatiable thirst to get fit and lose weight. Hence, it sold well in every territory, and has helped make the company even more moolah than it already had. Wii Fit was also ingenious for utilising a peripheral that could be used in the future for a much broader range of games, from skiing games, to the newly announced Wii Yoga.

Kotaku is reporting that most Japanese gamers are now sick of Wii Fit, with Japanese website IT Media asking the question: Do Wii Fit owners actually still play Wii Fit everyday? While 22% still did, 64% had now stopped using the game altogether. That’s the cue to bring in a sequel of sorts.

While Wii Yoga isn’t a direct sequel, though I’m sure work has already begun on Wii Fit 2, Wii Yoga is a yoga game from games publisher JoWood, and utilises the Balance Board in much the same way that the original Wii Fit does.

CVG reports that the game is scheduled for release in Q2 of 2009, just about the time when US and European gamers will also be getting sick of Wii Fit. The site also makes note that due to Nintendo’s terms and conditions, the Wii Yoga name is likely to be changed to something slightly more ludicrous before release.

Wii Fit is more a lifestyle device than video game, and Wii Yoga, or whatever it ends up being called, looks set to carry on increasing the demographic for the Wii to a more diverse group.

“every Wii owner is an immature dumbass”

By your standards you must own one.

    5. Matt:

@ SW…i will never own one…..the gayest console yet

    6. Anthony:

Wii Yoga sounds like another poor third-party project.

There are many games coming out for the Wii that will support the balance board. So the initial high price of it becomes sweeter.

The Wii is a great console that is truely next gen - in entertainment and group play. It is good at what it tries to be….which is why it is leaving other game consoles in the dust sale wise!

I was quite the skeptic when it came to the Wii, but now I have one sitting beside my lovely PS3 and frankly I am quite impressed. The remote control works a treat and kudos to Nintendo. They have made a very accessable games console for everyone to use. But I still love my PS3.

    8. No1WiiFanBoy:

this will be the final nail in the coffin for the 360/ps3

    9. Wylie:

      @No1WiiFanBoy

That was the stupidest comment I have read on here. We are all dumber for having read it!
