Patched PS3 Firmware v2.40 coming Wednesday - XMB & Trophies at last
By Dave Parrack
PS3 Firmware update v2.40 came and went last week. It was live for less time than I spend doing my hair very morning, and I’m balding. But if the rumours are to be believed, a patched version of the Xbox Live-mimicking update is coming on Wednesday July 7th… maybe.
The Firmware update for the Playstation 3 released last week was meant to be the dog’s cahunas, with many new features added which PS3 fanboys had been asking about for months. It was finally released on July 2nd, but was promptly withdrawn after many Playstation 3 owners reported the update had bricked their console.
While Sony has yet to issue any sort of official confirmation of the date of this new release, Sony customer support has been a bit more forthcoming. According to CVG, a new version of the update, cleverly titled v2.41, will be released “midweek”, pointing towards it being made available this Wednesday.
The new update is meant to have fixed all of the technical issues, and will finally allow PS3 owners the chance to enjoy the in-game XMB, and (not a copy of Xbox Live’s Achievements at all) Trophies.
It still amazes me that Sony saw fit to release a firmware update in the obviously unfinished state it was in the first place. They either rushed it through to get it out there and in working order before E3, or they used PS3 owners connected to the Playstation network as unknowing guinea pigs in order to test the update out for issues.
Just like with Playstation Home, Sony seems to be offering much but taking it away at the last minute. Surely the company has some of the best techies in the world employed to ensure delays and mess-ups like this don’t occur, but their track record suggests otherwise. Sony needs to be careful, or it could get as bad a reputation as Microsoft has.

Its simply because both companies (MS & Sony) are playing ‘who can break the most consoles’.
Now MS is winning with the RROD at the moment - they were on the ball and designed the machine with flaws! Everyone would just assume MS was trying to save a few $$$ and caught it in the ass for doing so, but its MS, everyone kind of expected it
Just like when you pick up a new version of Windows, you HOPE its better but in your heart you know its going to be a piece of bloatware that crashes every 60 seconds.
But!, Sony is trying to catch up by releasing software updates designed specifically to brick you machine - they added some new features of course to cover this up.
So who is going to start up a website related to this groundbreaking information?
July 7th, 2008
sucks for those who paid $600 for a brick. i wonder if sony will offer free shipping and extended warranties to cover the aggravation to the gamer. ms did…
July 7th, 2008
i’m sure they will do that for the very few who that happened to
I however have been XMB-ing for days now with no problems. I will say though that I am annoyed at the non existence of cross game voice chat. What up wiv dat??? I couldn’t care less about cross game invites, just as easy as to send a message asking if they wana start a game, and besides we have home coming soon anyway. But no cross game chat?
You disappoint me Sony.
July 7th, 2008
It gave my ps3 RROD, somebody help me.
July 7th, 2008
you got your ps3 broke due to 2.40? gutted, the only way to get your ps3 back is to wipe the harddrive
July 7th, 2008
@ kev…you are FUCKING RETARD..WHAT A FUCKING DUMBASS…ITs 500 for 80gb and 400 for 40gb….and you know what you are paying for a $400 and way up for a plastic melter…dumbass
July 7th, 2008
Sorry to disappoint Kev but from what I have read it doesn’t sound like it is a true Brick. People having this problem may have to wipe out their hard drive, but the PS3 itself is not the problem. Funny how you can turn RROD into a good thing for M$.
July 7th, 2008
wylie - i never said the rrod was a good thing. your words, not mine. i was simply pointing to ms committment to customer service and the willingness to stand behind their mistakes. From what i’ve read, sony has made no public offering to have the ps3 fixed at their expense like ms did with the 360.
matt - stfu. the ps3 were priced at $599 when they hit the market. some of those bricked were old ps3 bought at the launch price. nice job pointing out your ignorance.
July 7th, 2008
wylie - doesn’t wiping your hdd remove any game saves, user created playlists, and stats? that’s gotta suck for gamers.
July 7th, 2008
according to sony very few consoles were bricked.. my 2.4 ps3 works fine, same with everyone on my friends list who updated.. at least sony removed it immediately when they knew there was a problem, instead of leaving ps3 owners to chance it like M$ who seemed unphased when 33% of 360 owners ended up with the RROD…
July 7th, 2008
I was joking, I love the new update.
July 7th, 2008
Kev- I was just giving you crap about the RROD being a good thing. And yes it would wipe out everything on your hardrive and that would suck. But if you sent it in and got a new PS3 you would also lose everything. What I was getting at is that its not a problem that the people will have to send in their PS3 and not have it for weeks. However when they put the hardrive back in the PS3 I’m not sure how they will reformat it. I don’t know if the PS3 will automatically do it or if they have to select something. Obviously if they have to select “format hardrive” this won’t work and could be a bigger problem.

I PURCHASED MY PS3 60GB WHEN THEY FIRST CAME OUT ABOUT 2YRS. AGO (WAITED 8 HRS. IN LINE). MIND YOU I NEVER HAD AN ISSUE UNTIL I UPDATED MY SYSTEM AT ABOUT 5PM ON THE 3RD OF JULY WITH COD4 STILL BEING IN THE CONSOLED. AFTER THE UPDATE MY SYSTEM WILL PLAY PS2 GAMES, DVD’S, & CD’S BUT NO PS3 GAMES. I CALLED SONY AND THEY STATED THAT IT WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO DUE TO MY SYSTEM BEING OUT OF WARRANTY. SO NOW I AM OUT OF $600 BECAUSE OF AN UPDATE THAT SONY PUT OUT. WHAT CAN I DO, BECAUSE I FEEL LIKE I HAVE JUST BEEN ROBBED WITH OUT A GUN :-[
July 7th, 2008
@ kev…haha nice comeback…that made me lol…big whup..$600 at lauch…it lowered its price in a flash..and you know what else…the ps3 is worth every penny..i would pay 800 dollars for a ps3….
July 7th, 2008
DAVE PARRACK going bald…now thats a headline…lol Sorry to hear that brother
Kev get back under he rock you once came, you troll. Comparing RROD to 2.40 is utterly rediculas. You really are deserate aren’t you?
(Is it true XBLA is getting Duke Nukem 3d..?? I will be jealous if it is true)
July 8th, 2008
wylie - blame that on sony for not having a removable hdd like the 360.
July 8th, 2008
the ps3 does have a removable hard drive… it uses a 2.5mm laptop hard drive. You can remove it and replace it under warranty, it gives details how to do it in the manual.
As for reformatting, there are tutorials on playstation blogs. You can use a computer i believe
July 8th, 2008
bourne - in this case, you don’t need to send in the ps3 only the hdd. after all, you guys are saying only the hdd is affected. still waiting on sony’s public announcement saying they will fix the bricked ones for free including shipping. anyone got a link for that?
July 8th, 2008
spidey - the comparison is fair. a software company had a hardware design flaw and you guys want to crucifiy them even tho they’re fixing it for free to the consumer. a hardware company had a software design flaw and it’s completely forgiveable to you guys. even tho sony has NOT said they will fix THEIR OWN mistake for free, like ms.
this isn’t the first psn d/l that’s proved problematic to the $600 ps3’s. more to come for certain.

July 9th, 2008
Ah kevin, once again your “facts” are bullS&*%T made up by you that you think is facts. You are desperate xboxboy tha is desperately trying to find ANYTHING to make the RROD look less bad. Sorry champ, a dodgy firmware update aint going to cut the mustard.
1. It is NOWHERE near the same proportion to RROD and because of that:
2. A major press release for a major recall is not needed as each affected customer (very small number) can simply call Sony and have the problem rectified.
And low and behold, Arvis comes through with a press release Kevin said would not happen ….. Foot in mouth disease AGAIN Kevin ?? Who is getting “pounded” now.
YOU ARE DESPERATE KEVIN. Get a life FFS
BOTH SYSTEMS ARE GREAT, GET OVER IT !!!!!
July 9th, 2008
spidey - and the rrod is nowhere near the scale as the DRE and DDE fiasco of the ps2. hypocrite much? i never said they were the same (rrrod and the ps3 being bricked)
taking sony’s word for anything quality related only underscores your ignorance when you remember than sony TO THIS DAY has STILL refused to even admit the ps2 had a large scale problem. thankfully the courts didn’t see it that way.
you seem convince the number is “very small” so, how many?
July 9th, 2008
shut arguing its fixed
done.
July 10th, 2008
I have never heard anywhere near as much trouble for PS2 as there was/is for 360 Kev. Get some figures comparing the two from a non-biased microsoft source and enlighten us all.
Xbox360 is the ultimate “lemon” console of ALL time. Up to 33% failure rate….1/3 of consoles sold died….That is a feat that is going to be very hard to beat. But you can play it down as much as you want and play up PS to make 360 look less significant to make you feel better if you wish…FANBOY.
July 10th, 2008
spidey - i’m still waiting for ANY of you fanboys to show ANY data supporting your “33%” claim. you do realize that number showed up in forums first, right?
the fact sony had to get SUED before they helped their customers should tell you just how bad the ps2 and sony’s customer support is/was.
if the 360 was really such a “lemon” one has to wonder why it’s outselling the ps3 in the largest markets. goes to show that 1. quality isn’t paramount to gamers (proven by the ps2’s poor quality and high sales) and 2. people would PREFER to take a chance on a “lemon” than pay for the ps3. not good for sony.
i have a feeling there’s a lot to this industry you haven’t “heard of”…. as proven by many of your posts void of any industry fact or history…
July 10th, 2008
Kevin,
The fact is, Microsoft won’t release numbers on how many 360s have died. But financial analysts stated it could have been as high as 50% judging only from the amount of money they set aside to cover repairs.
Personally, I still assert that it has a 100% failure rate, since I’ve never heard of anyone owning one for more than a year that hasn’t broken. Excepting (obviously) internet fanboys, who are known for their honesty.

July 11th, 2008
arvis - the money set aside is only an estimate of what COULD cost ms. to use that as a benchmark is ludicris, but not suprising coming from you.
i doubt you know anyone with a 360, given your obvious slant towards the ps3.
it’s funny tho; i have over 30 friends on my xbox live friends list. Only 4 had to replace their consoles. so; what’s your gamertag?
