Kojima and David Hayter can’t agree over PS3 game Metal Gear Solid script
By Mike Ferro
David Hayter the famous voice actor of Solid Snake and Big Boss in the Metal Gear Solid franchise has been pretty candid on what is happening behind the scenes regarding getting a script approved with Konami and Hideo Kojima, the master mind behind Metal Gear Sold.
David Hayter is also well known for writing the script for X-Men and X-men 2 which were both phenomenal blockbuster hits. He has a proven track record of taking a story from one medium and translating it into film successfully, which not many have done before. I’m looking at you Uwe Boll.
During a speech at the Anime Expo recently David Hayter indicated his frustrations with getting his script outline of Metal Gear Solid approved by Konami’s producer and Kojima himself. According to Kotaku Hayter talks about the creative differences he has had with Kojima regarding how Snake should act in the face of death.
Maybe these differences are what is causing Konami and Kojima from accepting Hayter’s outline. It seems many Metal Gear Solid fans are worried about who would write the script for the movie and who would direct it as well.
We have all seen too many video game botched movies in the past, again I’m looking at you Uwe Boll. Hayter on an episode of Gametrailer’s Bonus Round voiced his wish to do the script but his disappointment at Konami’s hesitation to greenlight his outline.
Hayter urges in the Bonus Round, if fans wish to see him write the script for Metal Gear, send emails and letters to Konami and let them know. As it turns out fans have started to amass a petition requesting Hayter be the one to write the script for Metal Gear Solid the movie.
If you feel Hayter should be the one to write the script head on over to the petition and cast your opinion.

I’m not entirely convinced Metal Gear would translate well into a film at all. Even though much of it ‘seems’ like playing a blockbuster movie, I feel the franchise now has too much “baggage” which may result in three scenarios:
a) The film is true to Kojima’s vision, heavily exposition-laden, appealing to the hardcore fans but alienating audiences that aren’t familiar with the franchise.
b) The filmmakers take the general idea and go for an entirely self-contained story, discarding much of the franchise’s back story and self-indulgences, but pissing off the hardcore fans who wanted to see it made in the first place.
c) They give up and hand it to Uwe Boll, pissing everybody off.
But that is just my opinion. I think it would take a very talented and brave writer to tackle this and a lot of flexibility from Kojima (a long shot in itself). Perhaps Hayter is the best choice given his involvement in the franchise and his understanding of film story structure. But I’m still sceptical.

I do like David Hayter a lot, but Kojima is Kojima.
It’s like your two best friends asking you which one of them you like more. I just don’t want to answer that.
Which ever script is closest to the game’s is the one I prefer.
Anyone else annoyed they changed the story for the Resident Evil movies? The second film was dire.

i would say Kojima…..he directed all the MGSs……and i love how all the games are planned out…..but i dont want snake to die…..id rather have more than one movie…..if snake is too die and it will be the only movie….they would have to make it AMAZING AND LONG

How does a man hired as a voice actor figure he has any say in the scripting of the movie anyhow?
Am I missing something here?

SW,
Hayter wrote the scripts for the X-Men 1 and 2 movies. It says this right in the article…

Kojima is the only man for it really, it is his story. Though David should contribute.
Matt, hopefully they will have a film for each game, it would suck if they squeezed it all into 2 hours. 4 amazing, long films would be fine by me.

i reckon that David should contribute as well. I hope christian bale doesn’t get to be snake as i think Kojima was eying up. Hugh Jackman would be good, but also the lord of the rings guy wouldn’t be bad. Although it would be wierd without Hayters voice…

Arvis - I know that.
I’m hired to sell hotdogs, I have 30 years management experience.
I have NO right to comment on the running of the company I work for.
Jeez I thought my generation was bad.

Arvis - Yes I know that. I guess it msut be a personal ‘ethics’ kind of a thing (ethics isn’t the correct word I don’t think).
So I am hired as copy boy. I happen to walk into a sales meeting, I’ve had 15 years sales experience. There is NO way I would expect anyone to listen to ANYTHING I had to say even if in my mind i know %10000000 I was right.
I like David from the interviews I’ve read/listened to but the petition crap? For that I would strike him off my ‘movie’ team for good. No is no.

You ended on a triple post there SW, you win the lucky prize.
SW, think yourself lucky with your hotdogs, I’ve been folding t-shirts and putting them in boxes this summer. Pays for Uni though!
It is a bit bad of David Hayter to urge people to harass Kojima. Kojima’s word is FINAL. - unless he is talking about sequels.

Kojima needs an editor. Especially if he’s going to try movies. The Big Final Speech at the end of MGS4 a bit too wordy even for me, and the character basically repeats himself a million times. I liked it (because I love the characters) but people who have no emotional attachment to the series would be put off by Kojima’s verbose style. Hayter’s proven himself and absolutely has the right to promote his own screenplay and its integrity.

Are you guys really that excited about this movie. I thought the games told the whole story with the movies built right into the game. I for one would not waste my money going to the theatre for this one. I would probly rent it on bluray though.

i had know idea that guy wrote movie scripts. a mgs movie would be really cool, even if it was just MGS1.
