Breaking E3 News: Downfall of PS3 and turning point for Xbox 360 with Final Fantasy XIII

By Mike Ferro

Downfall of PS3 and turning point for Xbox 360 with Final Fantasy XIII During the Square Enix press conference some very interesting tid-bits of info were released. It seems the reason Final Fantasy XIII isn’t coming out soon is because of the Xbox 360.

Apparently according to the press conference via Kotaku, Square Enix will not start development of the Xbox 360 version until the PS3 version is completely finished. This means the PS3 version will be sitting on developer’s shelves for months, probably for almost another year until the Xbox 360 version in finished and localized.

Here is another kicker apparently according to Square Enix exec Shinji Hashimoto Final Fantasy XIII will not be coming out for the Xbox 360 in Japan. What the..? Is this some shady backdoor deal where Microsoft gets it in Europe and US but not in Japan?

When someone asked when the decision was made to go multiplatform Hashimoto stated:

“it wasn’t a long time ago that we made the decision. we had to adjust things, like our relationship with microsoft. it was recent.”

Wow, that means this decision was made last minute. Microsoft must have panicked about their E3 press conference and decided to fork over a fortune to get Square Enix to open their mega game Final Fantasy XIII onto the Xbox 360.

Also when another journalist asked if Final Fantasy Versus XIII will stay PS3 exclusive the answer was yes. However who knows, when they said the exact same thing about Final Fantasy XIII.

This just goes to show, you can’t trust anything coming out of these studio execs. Currently there is rioting going on everywhere even on Sony’s Blog fans are stark angry mad about the Final Fantasy XIII news, look here.

Many fans are claiming this is the end of Sony and this is the turning point for Microsoft. Could one game make so much difference?

It potentially could turn the balance and shift the favor towards Xbox 360 if the JRPG fanbase on the PS2 suddenly decided to jump to the Xbox 360 instead of the PS3. All of a sudden the Xbox 360’s JRPG lineup is looking quite stellar compared to the PS3 lineup.

If Sony wants to compete they need to do something fast, and start buying up exclusives left and right.

    1. SW:

I wager that the only noticeable impact that FFXIII will have is on the forums of many many gaming websites.

Its not being released in Japan AFAIK for 360, so no sales impacts there, and everyone this side of the side (and europe) already has a machine.

Remember how GTA4 made machines fly off the shelves!!! FFXIII is a grain of sand compared to GTA4.

If anything the 360 price cut will push sales way more, but still probably not by a huge margin.

    2. Rick:

LOL i was gonna leave a comment saying, “yeah this game will make an impact on console sales just like how GTA IV made impact on console sales” but looks like someone already beat me to it lol. but yeah microsoft is like EA games, they can’t beat the competition so they buy them out. i wonder how much they paid for the game. how are they winning by spending so much money anyway.

oh and another thing mike, you and dave seem to have been bought out by microsoft too because lately you both have been on microsoft’s side with stupid and exaggerated posts like, i mean seriously is the headline and story really proper “Downfall of ps3 and turning point of xbox 360″?

      i mean seriously you’re retarded.

    3. Ivan_PSP:

Final Fantasy XIII will still be a PS3 exclusive in Japan and it will release on PLAYSTATION 3 a year earlier than Xbox 360.The PS3 version will have more thing because of Blu-ray Disc. And Final Fantasy Versus XIII will still be only for PLAYSTATION 3.

    4. smoothn00dle:

this new got too much attention because this is a bad news for Sony. PS3 lost a game, so fanboy! It is only fair, now 360 and PS3 got one exclusive square rpg each.

Sony know it beforehand. What if Square show Final Fantasy VII remake at Sony conference?

    5. Spideydog:

I don’t care as long as each of the systems are each bringing out good games. (As they currently are) We don’t want one company to dominate - no matter which company.

      Competition is GOOD.

    6. harry sachz:

Go Microsoft!! I bet this news has a lot of Sony fanboys throwing furniture around the house in anger.

    7. Love:

      To harry sachz:

If Microsoft lied to you about something, would you be upset?

That’s exactly what Square did to PS3/FF fans. They led us to believe that it’s an exclusive, repeatedly. Then all of a sudden they made this announcement.

It burns. Congrat to you 360 fans for getting one of the PS3 biggest exclusive.

However, don’t forget that in Japan it’s still exclusive. Only outside of Japan where it’s multiplatform. With that said, the PS3 version will also be done first before they work on the 360 version.

    8. Bourne:

lol this is exactly like 360 losing bioshock, big deal? Im not a FF fan, never played it and im glad we have bioshock. We gain a 360/pc “exclusive” and they get final fantasy, i dont see how this is a downfall for ps3?

    9. Pariahs_Guild:

I find the whole thing funny…and ironic. Just proves that console exclusives are dead.

    10. kev:

ooooo…that’s gotta hurt… personally, i’d rather pull my eyes out with some pliers before i play another jrpg, but i’m sure some anime-loving types will buy it…

    11. Alienange:

Microsoft has only proved that it is a “me too” kind of company. Now they have FFXIII, Guitar Hero and Nintendo Miis … a real turning point for a unimaginitve company. To say “It potentially could turn the balance and shift the favor towards Xbox 360 if the JRPG fanbase on the PS2 suddenly decided to jump to the Xbox 360 instead of the PS3″ is laughable. FFXIII won’t be that good … MS should have went after Persona 5 instead.

    12. Spideydog:

Shouldn’t take you long to do tha Kev, you only have one eye…lol

    13. Arvis:

      Kev,

You know… somehow your post made me feel a bit better about this whole thing. Thanks, man. Seriously. :)

      -Arvis

    14. kev:

spidey- alright, then…you have zero room to whine the next time i flame you. i tried to keep it civil and your post is what i got in gratitude.

      arvis - no problem.

    15. Wylie:

I think we should wait for Sony’s press release before we get all up in arms. Personally like I said, I won’t play this game anyway, it does suck anytime you lose an exclusive though. Let’s wait and see what Sony has to say today. I’m sure it won’t be to exciting, but let’s give them a chance.

    16. Norm:

To the people saying ps3 get it first, read it again. It said it would be shelved until the 360 version is done.

      Geees.

    17. PlayStation RuLeZ:

Xbox 360 will get it a year after the PS3 version dumbed down

    18. Bourne:

      DAVE PARRACK aka PlayStation RuLeZ….?

    19. Matt:

      Ouch, that has to hurt.

Not so much because this game will make a difference this generation. Quite the opposite, I don’t think we’ll see any real change due to this one game. Most of the people really interested in it already have a PS3, and have had one for quite some time. Some people will pick up the cheaper 360 option if they do their research and know its comming later, but that number is small.

Where this hurts Sony is the future. Next generation, if you want a FF game, where do your turn? What if Sony doesn’t allow it, after this act of backstabbing? What if MS paid them big for a one time deal? What if they end up going back to Nintendo? Heck, what if EA gets in the console game and buys them out?

For many gamers, the younger sort that are out there now-a-days, this is the first they know of FF being anywhere but the playstation. According to what I see, Ivan doesn’t even realise that games can be on more than one disc, a real newcomer to the world of video games. Sony is hurt, in the future, with them

That being said, MS only benefits in the damage done to Sony, since most people who will play this game that haven’t already bought a console are the people that will be buying one at a garage sale in 5 years.

It’s only a blow to a reputation, but those often prove to be the most deadly. Of course, the question is how much money did MS spend to get this done (certainly it took a lot), and, that being asked, how long will Sony AND MS keep pouring money into these consoles while both struggle to gain a foothold against the Wii? My money is on one of these companies not being a part of the next generation, with FFXIII just now making this war bloody…first blood in a console war in more than 15 years…

We’ll have to wait and see how many FF fans will be wooed, to see what the real damage is, though.

    20. Spideydog:

Read my comment Kev, it was said in jest. But by all means flame away.

    21. SW:

“what if EA gets in the console game and buys them out?”

      WHO TOLD YOU MY NIGHTMARES??!?!?!

    22. Ton:

This could actually be a really bad move by Square. Sony owns 9% of their company, and so far Square has only given them one game on ALL THREE of their consoles for the past 2 years. (Final Fantasy: Crisis Core) And it wasn’t even that good of a game. If Square continues to do this, it could potentially cripple their company. A 10% drop in cash would result in a major layoff.

    23. harry sachz:

Yet another reason NOT to buy the P$3!!

    24. SW:

Harry double post like usual, you know you want to!!!!

Also, nice try to make PS3 into P$3, but its too late people have being doing that with M$ for years :)
