PS3 Metal Gear Solid 4 on Xbox 360? - Sony says Blu-ray means no…

There’s no doubt about it - Microsoft shocked everyone: gamers, industry watchers, and probably even Sony itself, when it announced that Final Fantasy XIII was now coming to the Xbox 360, and was no longer a PS3 exclusive. This has lead to speculation that other big Playstation exclusives could soon be on their way to the Xbox as well, with Metal Gear Solid 4 a name already thrown in to the hat.
I was as surprised as anyone when I found out that Square Enix, a company part-owned by Sony, had agreed to port Final Fantasy XIII, a long-time Playstation 3 exclusive, over to the Xbox 360. I don’t know how much money changed hands between Square and Microsoft to make this deal a reality, but surely there’s an intriguing back story to what ended up being the biggest surprise to emerge from E3.
This was such a shocker that speculation has been rife ever since over what other titles could also be on their way to the Xbox 360, and out of Sony’s sweaty palms. Metal Gear Solid 4 is the big name being bandied about, with some claiming Konami’s great opus is almost inevitably on its way to the Microsoft console.
According to MCV, a senior UK industry source said:
There’s only MGS left now, for a few months at least. It’s inevitable. Konami knows how many millions they’d sell in the US alone. If FFXIII can make it to 360 when Sony owns nine percent of Square, Metal Gear’s a slam dunk.
There were already rumours that Metal Gear Solid 4 could find its way to the Xbox 360, even before E3, but they were dismissed at the time due to the size of the game, and the fact that Blu-ray was needed to hold the game. In fact, the game’s creator Hideo Kojima even claimed that he’d had to make cuts to the game to even fit it on to a single Blu-ray disc.
That reasoning has again now been cited as a reason for the rumours coming to nothing. Tretton told E3 that “PS3 offers an experience for both gamers and developers no other console can match. Metal Gear Solid is not only exclusive on PS3, it’s only possible on PS3, thanks in part to Blu-ray.”
This does make sense, and seems to kill the speculation about the game ever coming to Xbox 360. In fact, by our reckoning, Metal Gear Solid 4 would have to ship on 7 DVD discs if it ever came to the Microsoft console.
So Final Fantasy XIII is on its way to the Xbox 360, but Metal Gear Solid 4 is very unlikely to follow. Still, you can’t have everything.

You would think that People would know about compression by now. Anyways even if it did come to 360 it would most likey be on lets say 4 disk the most. I played Lost Odyssey and that is on 4 disk and it does not faze me one bit. it’s not like there going to make you change disk in the middle of some action or something it will be done between missions, no big deal. I personally did not see the big deal with this game so really I don’t even care if it comes or not.

O well i wish final fantasy was exclusive but PS3 will get all the other grandtheft autos and rockstar will be all for the PS3. Any time Konami wants to make some more money, they will port the game. Unless of course, Sony is the one using bags of money to keep it exclusive (but we don’t like to mention that).

Think of this as you will…. But I don’t own MGS4 and probably never will. Not interested. Further to that, I will not be getting FF as I’m not interested in it either.
As far as I’m concerned, I’m getting a better deal getting Bioshock than losing FF. But other people will see it differently to me, because they like FF better than bioshock. So it’s all relative to ones point of view really.

Even if MGS4 made its way to Xbox 360, that would show how pathetic Microsoft and its retard fanboys are. Making money off of games you can’t even produce, wow that shows real talent there buddy! The only 2 Blockbuster hits you can make are Gears of War (which is not all of that good), and Halo (a series that is on it’s death bed now due to it’s addiction of glorifying Halo 2 which really sucked).

I could give a shit if MGS came to the xbox because I personally found both 3 and 4 to be a bit of a yawn fest. PS3 can keep it. If I buy a game, I want to be able to play it - not watch it.
If GT5 is done properly, that will sell systems, because of its universal appeal, not MGS or the FF franchise. They’re too much of a niche market for the masses to care.

Last generation we had Halo, Dead or Alive 3, Fusion Frenzy, and a few other games that did really well. But that was all…….But with the PS2, they literally had thousands of games to choose from!
Now with this generation, the same thing has a chance of happening again. If truth be told, only fanboys were the main consumers of Halo 3. The reason why I bought a Xbox 360 console was to upgrade from my original Xbox, and own Halo 3 because I was a fan of the original Halo.
But other than that, I see no use for my XBox 360. Dvd’s are a thing of the past now. Yeah, I’ll still buy them, but High Definition entertainment is standard now. With that being said, Xbox 360 will phase out in about 3 or 4 years just like the original Xbox, which pissed me off.
But you can bet, that 4 or 5 years from now, EVERYONE will be shocked about the progress PS3 has made. And when I say everyone I mean game developers, Sony, fanboys, consumers, casual consumers, college roommates, little kids, and a handful of adults.

MGS4 is impossible on Xbox 360 due to DVD9 being limited to just 8.5 GB. Just the audio for that game takes two entire dvd9 disc. Plus even FFXIII which it will be avaible a year earlier for PS3 and exclusive on Japan for ever will be dumbed for Xbox 360 due to the DVD9 disc on Xbox 360. Konami hates Xbox 360 especially Hideo Kojima.

Really fucking boring IMO. I could care less with the FF franchise also, RPG’s with turn based combat shit me to tears…but again thats my opinion.
By the way, the 360 is noisy and runs quite hot - okay nearly ‘meltdown’ hot, but i’ve never experienced any trouble and the selection of decent games takes a huge steaming turd on the available library for PS3 - not a fanboy statement, just fact.

Do you really believe that MGS4 could barely fit on 1 BD. Just for kicks put your MGS4 disc inside your windows PC with a BD drive and look at the files. Then you will notice that many of the files are repeated 3 times. Why do they do this because the loading times on the PS3 2X BD drive is SLOW!!! this speeds up the load times significantly because the drive doesn’t have to search as far to find the files it needs. At most this game would need 2 DVD9 discs.

its an old programmers trick that was also very common on CDROM discs. PS1 did this to great success. In fact I believe it was a mid 90’s EA sports Tiger Woods game that was found to have an entire episode of SouthPark burried into the file system (only playable through a PC). The reasoning for this was so that the CDROM drive wouldn’t search through the entire disc when loading. In that case it serves only as a filler. By no means was I knocking BD disc either its just that the drives aren’t fast enough for it yet (at least not and affordable price) and older PC games and xbox and PS2 games used these tricks as well.

@ Larry: The Japanese PS3 version will come out first. After 6 months the US PS3 and XBOX 360 will come out. After that, the EU PS3 and XBOX 360 version will.
So the Japanese version will be out earlier than the English one by half a year or so. I think that’s what somebody here meant. You can find this info in the interview.

MGS4 has undersold its expectations and didn’t ship nearly as many consoles or titles Sony was hoping for. Kojima is about to realize that game exclusivity isn’t the way to go anymore. Square Enix used to have exclusivity to Nintendo, then Sony, and now they are going multiplatform. Let’s face it, why develop and sell a game to only 1/3 of your potential customers.
I own MGS4 for the PS3 and I see nothing the Xbox 360 can’t do, if not better due to the better graphics card and more potential memory. No offense but there are games that look better, run better, and are a heck of a lot funner to play that fit on DVD9 discs (Halo 3, Gears, Heavenly Sword, Forza, Grid, COD4, and so on). Just about every PS3 game ever made can and has been put on a DVD9 disc: (1) downloadable demos on both systems are identical size, and (2) multiplatform titles run and look identical on the PS3 and 360 (although ign and other review sites prefer the 360 versions).
The logic is simple: Give a worker a week to complete a 1hr task and they will take the whole week to complete it. The same goes for storage: Give the developer 40GB and he will fill all 40GB whether or not he actually needs to.
Could MGS4 be ported to the 360? Sure. Will it actually be ported? Doesn’t matter, it’s already off the top sales charts. It’s a business, there is no loyalty. Everyone here is saying MS is throwing cash around trying to steal everyone’s games. Well, who do you think threw a bunch of bills at Kojima? Yup, all big corporations are the same. One thing is for sure, MGS5, will be multiplatform.
PS: what the heck is all this “in 4-5yrs talk about the PS3?” How sad is that. Do honestly think the next generation of systems won’t be out by then? Sony is going to turn into a developer just as Sega did….why?….EA will release their own console leaving MS with all the multiplatform and first party goodness. It will be EA and MS 2-3 generations of console from now. IF/WHEN EA DECIDES TO RELEASE A CONSOLE SONY BETTER WATCH OUT!

PS3’s cell can not compress the 7.1 audio that kojima wanted to use so that took up 10g’s right there. PS3 can NOT use a standard lighting and texture code menu.
Every single level in a PS3 game needs to have it’s own code menu when 360 can do it all in one…theres 20g’s. Since PS3’s GPU is only has HALF the the amount of pixel pipelines ( ps3 24, 360 48 / 366 million polygons per second for ps3 and over 500 million polygons per second in 360) the PS3 needs extra lighting and texture added from out of the code menu as well…theres another 5 to 7 gigs.
PS3 ONLY has 256 MB of RAM for graphics compared to the 360’s 512 MB of RAM.

FACTS…ram:PS3, has 256mb dedicated to CPU and another 256mb dedicated to GPU. You have the same RAM in total.

I think both systems have their strengths and weaknesses when it comes to processor speeds, ram, and GPU. I am an xbox fan but I think statisically the PS3 is better in every aspect aside from the 512 MB of shared ram that the 360 has vs the 512 (256 cell processor + 256 GPU) total ram of the PS3. Whoever thought of the idea at MS to let a developer choose whether they need more Ram for the GPU or main processor was genious.

360 can multitask alot better then PS3 as well. The Cell can calculate 1 x 1 faster then anything known to man but it can’t do 1 x 6 x 8 x 19. 360 beats it out in more ways then GPU.

Final Fantasy is coming to Xbox360 but by the time it comes it’ll be 2010 LOL!!! The fanboy atmosphere in here has gone absolutely nuts!
Normally we are pretty bad, but this time it has been taken to a new level.
If anything I’d say no to mgs4 because of the hassle. It’s more than just porting the game that would be involved, content would have to be removed too. Hideo being the sensitive huge vision type, would probably spend ages trying to ‘repatch’ those areas which have stuff removed from. And he has constantly said he wants to move on.
Basically even if it is (I believe he said it was ‘achievable’) possible, I don’t think money is going to cloud his vision (but hell, maybe it could).

What is cool about Little Big Planet is that everyone can create their own games and design completely new levels and do what ever they want.

MGS4 for the 360 in 4 discs is not impossible if all the graphics and movies are re-sampled for the 720p output.
On the PS3, even BR and a mandatory install, there is still a 2 min install between levels. It would be interesting to see how it goes on the 360 without a big hard drive and the installstion: how long will it take to load the game, between levels and during game play? Will the game play and cut scenes suffer? Not to mention a 4-disc version costs more money to produce - not just the discs, also QC, packaging and delivery.
If the game shows any performance difference which favors PS3, Microsoft may not want it at all.

I understand that there have been comments about MGS4 coming/not coming to the 360, and it really doesn’t matter to me, but I just wanted to clear up one thing: Konami is a third-party company, so Sony doesn’t own them, which means they can make games for ANY system they choose, not just Sony.
Also, the 360 has 512MB of UNIFIED RAM, which means that it uses the 512MB to distribute accordingly between video and audio. So at times it may only have 128MB or 386MB of video, all depending on the demand or necessity of that particular portion of coding in the game. Doesn’t make it more capable than the dedicated amount on the PS3. It’s just a different setup for the division of labor on each videogame system. Each layout has its pros and its cons. Also, the PS3 has 7 SPEs which are like having multiple processors, so it’s like having extra helpers to get the job done, and it only uses 6 either way. It’s barely breaking a sweat, so even if the 360 and PS3 have the same processor speed, the PS3 could do it more efficiently. Being that the system came out a year later, you can only expect it to pack a bit more punch. (NES and Genesis)
At the same time that doesn’t mean the same games can’t come out on both systems and look good. There are many programming tricks and techniques that can be used to make a game look great even without hi-def, as COD4 and a few other PS3 titles have proven. GTA4 ran at a higher resolution on the 360, but people said the PS3 version looked slightly better. Why? Anti-aliasing, bit mapping, etc. Each system has tricks up its sleeve to pull off the necessary stops. And vice-versa as I’ve heard 360 games looking better than PS3 games that have gone multiplatform.The graphics on this current generation are so good, that this shouldn’t even be an argument. We would all be lying to ourselves if we said 360 graphics suck, or PS3 graphics suck. Yeah, 360 uses DVD9, so multiple discs may be necessary for certain games. When did that stop anyone from playing games a generation or two ago? Heck even the Wii, which is the least powerful, if it was given hi-def, the games would look amazing. You hook up its component video setup, and the games look crisp. Yeah, most games are kid-like and have a cartoon look, nonetheless, but the graphics are clean and crisp. These aren’t 32, 64, or even 128 bit systems anymore.
I understand we all have preferences, but these are all very capable systems, fellow gamers. Let’s rejoice in what looks like a Golden Age of Gaming.

Besides, if you took the hi-def cables off your PS3 and 360s and put your composite cables instead, the graphical difference between them and the Wii would not exist.

I don’t think it’s too much of a stretch to port it to the 360. Changing disks is no more of a hassle than 2 minute installs in between Acts anyway. But I can’t see it happening, especially with all the ‘PS3 exclusive’ jokes actually appearing in the game. But I don’t mind either way, I have it and I love it.
