NPD: Due to MGS4 PS3 sales crush Xbox 360 by two folds

Wow, just breaking news according to NPD, PS3 sales have sold more than 400k during the month of June in comparison to Xbox 360’s 220k sold. Those numbers are Christmas like figures during the middle of summer which is phenomenal.
During the Month of May the Xbox 360 sold 186,000 units while the PS3 out sold it, by selling 208,709. The Xbox 360 sales did jump from 186k in May to 220k in June so there was an increase in sales.
PunchJump reveals in June PS3 sales jumped from 208,709 to 405,488 which is about double what it sold the previous month and a 94% month-to month increase. Analysts have attributed this jump to the launch of Metal Gear Solid 4.
According to NPD the highest selling game for the month of June was indeed Metal Gear Solid 4 which moved 774,647 units not including the bundle. According to GameDaily, NPD analyst Anita Frazier indicated that with the Metal Gear Solid 4 bundled game included MGS 4 sold about a million units during the month of June, far outselling its closest rival Guitar Hero on Tour by two folds.
These figures are just in the US only it would be interesting to see how the PS3 and MGS 4 faired worldwide with Europe and Japan in favor of the PS3.
However don’t count the Xbox 360 out yet, I suspect with the fire sale of the 20GB Xbox 360 to make room for the 60GB Xbox 360 sales may see a bump next month.
It’s interesting how all the analysts such as Michael Pachter were incorrect that Grand Theft Auto IV would move consoles and game show host Adam Sessler of X-Play perdicted MGS 4 would not move PS3s due to lack of broad appeal. It seems like both game industry gurus were wrong on both counts.
It’s really summarized well when Game Daily says:
While the long rumored “GTA IV Hardware Bump” never really came to pass, the PS3 certainly benefited from a MGS 4 hardware bump. The PS3 sold over 405k units, which is nearly double the roughly 220k in sales that the Xbox 360 saw. The PSP and PS2 saw sales of 337k and 188k, adding to impressive month-on-month sales increases for the PlayStation brand as a whole.
I wonder what Adam Sessler has to say about Metal Gear Solid 4 now?

What was that Kev…..ps3 in trouble you say when it outsold 360 2 to 1..and thats in N.A. 360 homeland. Pfft more salt into the wound.
In sayng this, I suspect that the sales should settle down now though and return to normal programming.
(if this was the other way around, Kev would be digging the knife in further and twisting, but some of us aren’t like that)

Good to see that the PS3 is selling so well in 360 territory, no doubt Kev and Hairy are going to put an outrageous spin on it, blaming the alignment of the sun and moon for these ridiculously high sales.

The sales will calm down next month I guess.
However, Sony doesn’t see this as a PS3 VS 360 war (I am sure they do on some level behind closed doors
).
Sony see’s their sales as the ‘playstation brand’ - I don’t remember the figures for this month exactly, but it was in the realm of 300k psp’s and 180k PS2’s. So even without the PS3 they have shifted almost half a million units of hardware, adding the ps3 into the mix gives you just over 3/4 of a million units. Not bad for one month
So sure PS3 sales will drop back to 200k next month or the month after, but Sony is still shifting well over 500k units of hardware each month.

Settle down, your precious 360 isn’t done for yet.
With a 18month head start you can boast all you want, but with the pitifull fast shrinking lead 360 has at the moment, it would be a little unwise to be shooting from the hip with remarks like yours. I think that this month could be the biggest decider yet. If PS3 sales STILL outweigh 360’s then i truly believe that its game over for 360. Thats because as kevin said, with a cheaper console with more storage there should be larger sales than PS3. If this doesn’t happen in N.A (homeland of 360) then worldwide, 360 will fall from grace and die in its red ring of death hell. These are the largest inscentives to buy a 360, yet if people still decide PS3 is the better choice of console then Microsoft could offer a gold plated jewel incrusted 360 and it still wouldn’t sell. This months going to be the decider.

Come on Bourne, you just KNOW MS will figure out SOME way to breath life into their fading fast console. It takes a “fire sale” to pump their numbers, but MS don’t care (they don’t mind losing billions of $$$ apparently) and when the July figures are announced there’s no doubt our beloved phanboies kev and hairy et al will be telling us how X360 just pwned PS3 and how it’s all over and Sony should just pull out of the market and go home.
And isn’t it funny how we aren’t hearing kev and hairy and crew trumpeting the MS E3 news, since MOST of it wasn’t game related. What’s that, the X360 is ALSO media hub like you guys have SO blasted the PS3 for being? So sad you are….

Maylon- we trash talk Kev for a reason. I am biased to the PS3 because I own that counsole, so I guess I’m a bit of a fanboy, but I do think the 360 has some good futures(god please don’t let Kev read that) I just prefer the futures the PS3 gives me.
Harry- Most people don’t even know what E3 is. Go to a store and when people are looking at counsoles ask them what they thought of E3. They won’t know what the hell you are talking about. And M$ didn’t have a great E3, nobody did. They had the suprise of the week, but all they did was get the same game PS3 already had.
This is good news for Sony, but this isn’t over. This is a marathon, I’m sure M$ will come up with something to counter the latest trends. It’s nice to see PS2’s still selling, maybe the PS3 10 year plan doesn’t look so stupid huh Xbots!

Bourne - which part of “good sales” didn’t you understand? you forget that sony had a “loyal customer base” 8 TIMES the size of the xbox. the ps3 SHOULD be outselling the 360 at LEAST 5 to 1 in every month on the market. yet, it’s not. you don’t think mgs4 had some backwind in the sales? what now? mgs4 is on the market… what’s sony got left? not much.

Yeah E3 wasn’t too good for either console this year, most things on the sony side of the camp we already knew about, but whats not to like, it would be good if God of War 3 came out this year though!
I was gutted when FF13 was announced for the 360, but then i woke up and realised why do i care? lol @ the lips comment btw, like singstar but without the wide brand recognition.
All in all should be a good holiday season for all gamers regardless of which console they own, i’m looking forward to alot of ps3 games, wish i could play gears 2, but i’ll just wait a couple of months & play it on PC… with better graphics… and more content.

I am not backtracking one bit. Xbox is taking an already designed product and improving it. If Lip was just a game with a mic, then yes, that would be copying, but it is a game with a motion and pressure sensing mic. Hence, it’s better than Singstar. Can it get any clearer than that?
P$3 getting a guide button that works nearly identically to the 360s = copying.
Do you see the difference, or did you want me to use smaller words?

arvis - it’s important to remember the following failings:
1. the 120 million users will ensure the ps3 eclipses the 360 sales in the first year. didn’t happen.
2. PSN will be free so more people will use it. didn’t happen.
3. once hd dvd dies, the ps3 will fly off the shelves as “bloooray is teh future”… not happening, still.
4. GTA (PRE-360 annoucement) will sell a TON of ps3. didn’t happen.
5. MGS4 will propel the ps3 past the 360’s YTD worldwide sales. didn’t happen.
one would think you sony fans learned your lesson by now, but i guess you’ll hype anything with so little for the ps3.

What do you mean “they aren’t saying what’s revolutionizing” about it? It’s the video game equivalent of YouTube. Game sharing, customization, and user-generated content on an unprecedented level. This concept has been screamed about regularly for the last year. So… no, so far I see nothing that should “incur my suspicious.”
Of course, I wouldn’t blame you for not paying attention to a PS3 exclusive. Apparently a Final Fantasy game came out on the DS a while back and I didn’t even notice! Because it’s on the DS, you see. And I don’t care about the DS. Even a little.

What you fail to realise Kev, is that we don’t care about netflix and it’s 10 thhoooousand movies….. I don’t want “streamed” movies that I don’t own and hog bandwidth for 2-3 hours at a sub standard quality. Netflix is all YOURS m8, don’t hog it all at once or your bandwidth.

arvis - unfortunately the numbers don’t support your claim. gta failed to move more ps3 than 360. mgs4 enjoyed great monthly sales, but every indicator says they’ll fall back down in july. finally, PSN has waaaaay less users than xbox live. so again, you’re off the mark.
