Play PS3, Wii & Xbox with your mind – Neural Impulse Actuator controller

July 26, 2008

Play PS3, Wii & Xbox with your mind - Neural Impulse Actuator controllerHow do you control your favourite games? I’m guessing PS3 and Xbox 360 owners use control pads, while Wii owners use their nifty little Remote. But doesn’t that all feel a big old-fashioned? Surely there’s an easier way to play games?

While consoles, and games machines have come and gone through the years, the control methods haven’t really diversified a great deal. Oh sure, each console has a control pad designed specifically for it, and then there’s the keyboard and mouse combination which makes FPS games a joy, but that’s really about it. At least until this generation, when Nintendo threw away the blueprints and started afresh with the Wii Remote and Nunchuk methods. But there could be something much more exciting around the corner: the ability to control games just by thinking about it.

This sounds like something out of science-fiction, but believe me, it’s real. Neuro-headsets, which read neural activity, are actually old technology, having been around since the 1970s. But up until now, the cost of developing such a system, and the lack of precision involved in using one, has prevented it being used in any real practical sense.

Not only is the Emotic EPOC headset coming out later this year, which will be used for “strategic enterprise business markets and virtual worlds”, there is also the OCZ Neural Impulse Actuator. The latter is already available for use with PC games, but OCZ is looking at moving in to the much more lucrative market of console gaming as well.

The Neural Impulse Actuator interprets electrical signals from your brain in order to allow you to manipulate objects on screen. The device already allows PC gamers with big pockets to play games such as Crysis and Unreal Tournament, but with the PC gaming market faltering in the face of high-tech console competition, the company behind it knows it needs to move up in the world.

Tobias Brinkmann, director of marketing at OCZ told Tech Radar:

“It’s definitely something we are looking into. The thing we think would be most cool is to get the NIA working with the Nintendo Wii – that would be good. But of course it would be great if we could get it working with all the consoles.

This would indeed be awesome, and could potentially revolutionise the way we play games, and interact with technology. The company is clearly targeting the Wii first, and Nintendo could be about to get another advantage over its competitors in terms of innovative control methods.

If the next Nintendo console had this sort device at the heart of it, I don’t care what anyone says, but every gamer would want one, even the most loyal Sony, or Microsoft fanboy.

I’d hate to play games like this! how much of a dick would you look just sitting there playing games with a great big headset on and occasionaly expressing an odd ” you n00b” or “god dammit”.

  2. DaveP:

That’s how Kev already plays games, isn’t it? ;)

  3. Bourne:

lol DAVE PARRACK i resent you comparing me to Kev!!!….although in hindsight i guess he does while always comparing each pixel to how it pwns ps3.

  4. dlo:

this device doesn’t work this way
it doesn’t work by thinking about it
it works by reading facial movements
like u can shoot by blinking
and walk by moving ur eyebrows
    things like that

  5. Spideydog:

DAVE has a swipe at Kev……..lol

Actually, Kev is using his mind right now, to try and control us all and convert us heathens to 360.

Not gonna work Kev, I’ve got my aluminium foil hat on on… ;-)

  6. IHateYouAll:

Not only does sound the next step in creating a global fat farm, but also retarded regardless of which platform it will be used for? I have a hard time using my imagination as it is, but if this technology could be utilized for something that could change the world…like if this could let a guy toss off using only his mind, I think that would change the world enough for me to be convinced.

    **Stop fanboyism; hang yourself**

  7. fagboys make me sick:

next step is to see the game in one of does tihngs so it gets realy realistic adn resident evil will be one of the best games playing that way.

this i wont buy untill they make something for the eyes.

  8. SW:

I dunno, it would take some serious mind control.

Imagine starting to get attacked in a game, you think ‘OH SH*T’ and you end up just spinning around whilst bunny hopping on the spot.

    You then get owned.

  9. Bourne:

yeah i agree SW, imagine if your mind wandered off topic and there was like a mind control paining session and you started thinking arousing thoughts….nuff said?

  10. The Future of Sega:

Hey “fags boys makes me sick”, have you ever thought about changing your name?? Lol, that has got to be the funniest name I’ve ever seen! Ha ha ha everytime I see that name posted, I laugh my grits off. :)

But anyways, I ask myself, do I care??? You think I give a snake’s ass about that technology now since that they are developing for the shittiest video gaming console of all time!?!??? The horrendous Nintendo Weener!!!

WELL FUCK YOUUUUU!!!! I’d rather watch Power Rangers than play with that crap! lol

    The Future of Sega

    happy?

  12. The Future of Sega:

    @ Omen…..Indeed :)

  13. It's the future:

Play cs with this headset, is just think and you shot, who think faster win. Or imagine in playing star wars and using push power, who have the most powerful mind win?
    Baaaaaaahh…
And if dlo is correct, so u walk using eyebrows and if u have and atrophy on eyebrows muscle.
Would be good a special power activated with ear moviment. On GTA to have sex we would need erect cock. DLO was thinking in a thing like this?

  14. dickhead:
