UK prisoners have their PS3 & Xbox taken away – no adult games in jails
Prisoners incarcerated in British jails will no longer be allowed to play adult games rated 18 or over. Access to the PS3s and Xbox 360s already installed in prisons will be limited, and the State will not be supplying the consoles for prisoners any more. About time too.
I was always under the impression that video games consoles were a luxury, and something which could only be afforded by hard-working people earning enough money to afford such luxuries. Unless of course you go and steal one, either from a shop or neighbour. But no, it seems that British prisoners get treated to these luxuries as well.
I’m not well off, and I’m not being snobby at all, but I find it galling that while I can’t afford to have every games console I desire, despite working quite hard for a living, prisoners in some British jails, and young offenders institutions can, and they don’t even have to pay for them. But something is now getting done about this flagrant abuse of taxpayers money.
I’m actually liberal, and don’t follow the herd in thinking prisoners should be locked up 24 hours a day, and have no kind of life. But I do draw the line at them playing games consoles. I hardly think the latest human rights laws include any kind of legislation about how criminals should be allowed to play the latest Grand Theft Auto or Halo game.
The British Government has now admitted spending more than £10,000 on buying and installing 80 Playstation 3’s and 15 XBox 360s in prisons, and young offender institutions. The reason, as explained by the Daily Telegraph, was to stop prisoners from becoming depressed. While I don’t want anyone committing suicide in prison, I’m sure there are better ways than providing games consoles, and the authorities agree.
Now, prisoners are to be banned from playing any game with an 18 rating. While I don’t agree that violent video games can adversely affect a person, it may be prudent not to give those types of games to people already potentially prone to acts of violence.
Inmates who want to play other games will have to buy the consoles for themselves, but not everyone will be eligible to either. Only those displaying good behaviour, or on suicide watch will be given the opportunity.

They say that crime pays – it sure does. Even when they do get caught we (the taxpayer) ends pay for these idiots to sit and play games.
