PS3 turning the corner by becoming EA’s top seller?
EA recently released their financial statement and there is a surprising turn of events on the sheet. Currently the PS3 is shown to be selling much more software than any of the other consoles including the PS2.
This is definitely an odd turn of events considering the PS3 actually is in last place when you consider total consoles sold to date. That means somebody has to be buying up all of EA’s titles.
We all know EA is the largest third party video game publisher in the world so when they show statistics and numbers people sort of tend to pay attention. That’s why other sites including Kotaku, Fragland, Play.tm, Eurogamer and Game Daily are calling the PS3 EA’s top single bread winner.
I wouldn’t go that far as to say that, but it is one of those facts that just smack you on the side your head out of nowhere. According to EA financial report the PS3 accounts for $139 million in revenue from software sales while the other systems such as the Xbox 360 accounts for $81 million, PS2 a close $79 million and Wii $59 million.
Who is buying all that software? The Xbox 360 and the Wii both have a larger consumer base with about 19 million and 30 million respectively in contrast to the PS3’s 14 million base.
On the handheld front it looks like the PSP took the top spot by accounting for $57 million and DS accounts for $44 million in software sales. Yowzers, that means Sony attributes to about $275 million just in software sales alone out of EA’s total revenue of $800 million.
The oddest thing according to the EA report the PS3 increased by 969% from same time last year, lets join in a collective “whaa…?”
However strange that percentage increase figure may seems it just goes to show you what a difference a year has made for the console. I suppose that’s why EA is doing an about face and announced today on their blog they will be adding exclusive content to the PS3 version of FIFA 09.
I’m sure that will make a bunch of Europeans happy.

Thats great news, the ps3 is the best console out there. I own all three and have nothing against any of them, i just find myself playing ps3 more than the others.

Here’s the secret. PS3 owners are buying PS3 software. Those who bought PS3 to play Rock Band, GTA4, MGS4 also want one of those great EA sports titles. What of it?

yeah but you just said in your own post the reason why this is a bit odd. The PS3 hasn’t sold as many consoles as the others on the market so really its quite a strange thing for the PS3 to have sold more software than anyone else. Because there is fewer consoles around, you would expect fewer games to be sold on the system. Or one would think so anyway. But obviously not according to this report

MS just has better exlusives and a much better library, no reason for people to shell out more for mediocre EA games.
When PS3 is relying on EA games then there is definately a problem.
This news only makes Sony look good to the ignorant.

Isn’t it funny how the X360 fanboys come out to pooh pooh ANY good news realted to a Sony device. You can’t argue the numbers. Of course, next we will hear some X360 fanboy saying there is some mystery group out there buying up EA software for Sony hardware just to pump up sales. There must be a PS3 and PSP on every black helicopter….

meh.. as a 360 owner i don’t really care for ea games. very cookie-cutter with no real innovation. heck, look at madden. very little innovation from version to version while still being charged 60 bones for it…. bleh…

I think the same as the other people who has Xbox 360 like me. I got 21 games, and only 3 of them (NFS ProStreet -beautiful graphics, awful gameplay-, Fifa 07, and Burnout Paradise -the best racing game i’ve tried for a while-) are from EA. So the other 18 games are from different publishers/developers. If the PS3 is not getting any good games the owners have to buy what they can, isn’t it ?
Some good stuff is coming for the PS3, not just yet (I’m intrigued about Resistance 2, though). Let’s see how everything goes for EA when the PS3 gets it’s truly first-party support. BTW, try Boom Blox from EA as well, it’s really funny!!

royzy – i think an article with quotes from the developers would be equitable since they use (paraphrased) quotes from sony’s/ea’s p.r. all the time.

Can you read what this article is about or do you just go on the attack all the time? The PS3 is selling the most games for EA. So obviously it isn’t a dead horse. Yes its last place but its still sold 14 million, quite a lot of consoles you would agree, AND dont forget that the xbox has probably sold 6 million more at most, and thats giving it a 2 year headstart.
and you say this site wont post anything anti-sony, i’ve seen plenty before. Your just forgetting them because there is actually more positive things to say about the PS3 without rehashing the same old things for the xbox. Yes, 20+ million consoles… FFXIII…. erm anything else?

This is the way of the games industry across all platforms
EA just does it more than most because they are so huge and create/publish so much.
To say that PS3 owners purchase more EA because of a smaller game selection could actually be part (small) of the reason here too.
But also remember that EA produces so much cross platform stuff that if you buy it on A you aren’t really gonna buy it for B. I would prefer to have anything EA on my PS3 tbh. I like the 360 but damn its scarey playing that thing for 5 hours in case it RRODs. On top of that the PS3 ‘feels’ a higher quality (not talking fps, resolution etc, because we’d be here all nite) in my opinion (which you can’t call wrong because its opinion! nar nar
)
My point is, maybe people with both platforms buy more for PS3 or just get exclusive big guns (halo etc) for thier 360s.
Who knows!
Either way, we can’t prove any theories in the thread so far

the ps3’s launch date is when it hit the market… anywhere… stop moving the goalposts to take the sting off the ps3’s failure to meet promises…
remember; Kuturagi (father of the playstation) stated the early launch of the 360 would mean nothing in the face of “120 million loyal ps users”.

How many RROD’s does it take for a user to switch to a RELIABLE gaming console? Baffles me the reports we see of people on their second, third, even fourth X360, and still the lemmings go back for more pain. You can actually tell when Kev is impressed by good news for the ps3 because instead of going straight into a rant he goes:

I think this article is more important than C&C 3 (who cares about RTS’s designed for PC’s and then put on consoles).
The EA – PS3 news has been appearing on alot of sites and I wasn’t even aware C&C 3 was planned for the ps3.
The FIFA 09 exclusive content is massive good news for ps3 in Europe (u wouldn’t believe how well it sells in the UK). If the content is very noticable to the public there will be a massive gap between the ps3 and other versions.

surprising but important news. the ps3 has had a remarkable but not unexpected turnaround this year and has a strong head of steam headed into 2009. nothing has happened overnite but sony seems to finally have it’s shit together and will be releasing some big exclusive titles and rolling out the one and only HOME shortly before christmas shopping season. expect big numbers from sony in the sales department . they might outsell the WII over the holidays. oh, and the 360 has avitars, lol.

arvis – sony did not honor the dde issue when the ps2 was first bought as 1. it did not happen “all the time” and 2. the ps2 “still worked”, according to sony’s customer support so nothing could be done.
