Wii outsells PS3 by 3-to-1 in Japan – PSP beats Nintendo DS
Japan is the spiritual home of video gaming, which means what happens there can directly influence the industry around the world. At the moment, it seems the Wii is still smashing the PS3, the Xbox 360 is dead, and the PSP is starting to sell again while the DS loses momentum.
Although sales figures in the USA and Europe are likely to be of much more interest to our readership here at Blorge, it’s important to also look at the latest figures from Japan when they are released. Although I doubt we have many readers from the land of the rising sun, hardware sales from Japan are important nonetheless for seeing the worldwide state of this generation.
The latest hardware sales figures to be released by Enterbrain (translated by Reuters) reveal that the Nintendo Wii is still outperforming its rivals in Japan, and by quite a margin. In the four weeks ending July 27th, the Wii outsold the PS3 by three units to one. The Xbox 360 isn’t really even worth mentioning.
Nintendo sold 171,851 of its Wii consoles in that time frame. This compares very favourably to Sony, which only managed to shift 54,823 units of the Playstation 3. Microsoft shifted 14,439 units of the Xbox 360, which means that the console is barely managing to hold on to its user base in the country.
While Nintendo might be winning the battle of the home consoles in it native Japan, it’s losing out to Sony when it comes to the arguably even more lucrative hand-held sector. The DS is still doing brilliant business, selling 217,639 units, but the oft-derided and written off PSP is doing even better, with Sony shifting 256,765 units in the month of July.
Nintendo recently revealed it had made almost $1 billion in profit in the last quarter, and the success of the Wii in every territory looks set to continue the trend of Nintendo’s wallet bulging for some time to come. Sales of the DS do seem to be dropping off a little bit though, probably because everyone and his grandma already owns one.

Does this mean the PS3 is closing the gap? a few months ago it was like 7-1 sales?? But as you say DAVE Japan is such a small market, its not really indicative of the global trend.

Japan is one of the territory Xbox is getting stink and Japan is a very important gaming market because Sony and Nintendo and almost every single game developer is from Japan. PLAYSTATION 3 is doing very well while Xbox 360 is dying Wii is just for idiots who love weird geeky toys mimicking a gaming console with useless crappy controller schemes. In the end Sony will do the same as before aka PlayStation 1 and 2 take over.

What i meant if you weren’t such a turd brained fanboy is that From a gap in the beginning of 6/7-1 to close it to 3-1 is a big improvement.

No one cares about what you write especially not me i know more about gaming then u will ever know. But since i don’t consider Wii a video game console i only check ps3 and xbox 360. i have never touch a nintendo product in my entire 21 years cuzz is not for me. PS3 is doing great in sales now that’s all it matters. Nintedo got lucky but until when. People not gonna play Wii mini games for the rest of their lives standing up is pathetic. The only real gaming system are PLAYSTATION 3 and even Xbox 360 AND ps2 AND psp.

Ivan, you really are a little child aren’t you. I’m a PS3 owner, not a 360 or a Wii owner and i’ve never played either of these. If you want to ignore what i write then thats completely fine, but the fanboy crap you always spew is a complete joke, more than Kev.
