Xbox 360 Avatars have God Mode, you can’t kill them
Okay, folks this news really goes into the weird video game bin. I know many of you are anticipating the Xbox 360 dashboard update as I am, just so you can dress up your Mii-like Avatars to make it look like you. However, it seems like you won’t get a chance to see your creation simulating death in any of the games.
According to Xbox Live GM Eric Kilgore, Microsoft is only allowing avatar integration into games that are rated E10+, meaning no games with violence or where you can end up dying. Kilgore doesn’t go on to explain this policy aside stating this policy may change in the future.
I truly am disappointed as I wanted to control my avatar instead of Marcus Fenix in Gears of War 2 as I get chainsaw’d in half by the locust hordes.
Now let’s have a bit of fun and speculate why Microsoft put such a ridiculous policy in place.
1) Microsoft is afraid Xbox 360 fans will become depressed when watching a life like recreation of themselves dying over and over again.
2) Microsoft wants to market avatars to children 10 years and younger, so that leaves all the pimple faced teenagers out of the picture.
3) The avatars just look too darn cute to kill in the most gruesome way possible. ohh cute bunnies!
Alright, enough playing around, aside this silliness it looks like Microsoft has some good ideas on implementing the avatars beyond the Xbox Live experience. Microsoft is also working to make it easier for anyone to bring their avatar image onto the Internet or social site such as Facebook.
They are also working on making it possible to post tags on forums or profiles so you can view your avatar instead of that ugly mug you decided to put in your profile.
I really can’t wait for this mega update so I can start dressing err.. I meant customizing my avatar.

Back on topic… Someone should release a game/patch on XBLA for a mini game involving these avatars where everyone can grab a weapon and start killing or something, although the big wigs would probably swoop in and kill whoever launched it.

What good games on 360 (or any platform) are there which don’t involve violence of some sort? Even most racing games tend to be violent in some way now. I know, lets all play a tennis game.

That’s the point Royzy… MS is outright copying this from Nintendo in an attempt to go after the Wii’s market. They think this is somehow going to make X360 more appealing to a bunch of fans (and their parents) that wouldn’t otherwise buy a “serious” game console. I suspect Sony will do something similar if Home ever gets out the door.

Haha sorry Arvis. I love real tennis, but not as far as buying Top Spin 3.

Royzy,
That’s because Top Spin 3 is terrible. Virtua Tennis is where it’s at…

The real question is…if they can’t die, would it be more fun it games where everyone else can?
Even I want to throw some plasma grenades on myself, run into a group of enemies, and walk out unharmed with my godly avatar!
