Deering: PS3 & Wii to tie by 2011 - Xbox 360 dead last, PS2 still alive

I personally think this is one of the most exciting generations we’ve ever had in the games industry. One of the main reasons for this is that we are still yet to have a clear winner in the home console sales department. So where will we be in 2011? Chris Deering thinks he knows.
Chris Deering used to be President of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, so he’s a man who knows about as much as any man could about the games industry. His time at Sony will also have included trying to plot the course of console sales in the future, something that obviously needs to be high on the agenda at Sony. Basically, he’s not just pulling this stuff out from nowhere.
Which makes his prediction that the PS3 and Wii will have (almost) tied for first place in worldwide sales by 2011 an intriguing one. According to Develop, he made the prediction during the talk which kicked off this week’s Edinburgh Interactive Festival. But that wasn’t the end of his crystal ball gazing.
By the year 2011, Deering predicts the global gaming market will be made up of around 2.5 billion people. Current consoles will make up around a fifth of that with 500 million users, while gaming PCs and emerging mobile platforms such as the Apple iPhone will have around 1 billion active users apiece.
We’ve heard a lot about the iPhone, and other smartphones with it, being viable gaming platforms of the future, but 1 billion people actively using their mobiles for gaming seems a bit of a push, particularly in the space of just 3 years.
On the individual games platforming market, Deering predicts that by 2011 the Nintendo DS will have an installed user base of 150 million. The Wii would be on around 80 million, with the PS3 only just behind on 70 million. The Sony PSP will also be at 70 million, while the Xbox 360 will be struggling on 40 million.
Although that looks bad for Microsoft, 40 million sales should ensure Microsoft stays in the console manufacturing business. In fact, were these predictions to prove correct, all three companies would do exceedingly well and be able to claim some sort of victory. Deering even predicted that the PS2 will still be doing well, with an active user base of around 90 million people worldwide. Which is massively impressive for a console that would be well in to its planned retirement.
Of course these are just predictions, ones that Deering has made after studying existing sales data from Screen Digest and other industry sources. No-one can know the future, but I think Deering has more chance at getting it right than a lot of the other hacks who bandy figures around every month.
I started by saying how I feel this is one of the most exciting generations we’ve ever had in the games industry, and if these predictions come true, it could also end up being one of the most lucrative for the big three of Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo.

We’re looking aat 2.5 years.
The Wii has shipped about 29.5 million units according to Nintnedo.
The PS3 has shipped about 14.5 million units accordint to Sony.
Both figures are from July 30th.
This means if the Wii did not sell another console, the PS3 would need to get 500k units into homes, on average, per month, for more than 2 straight years.
This is very possible on a worldwide scale. According to the math, however, the Wii gets nearly 2 million sales per month, on average, worldwide. Assume this slows down by a huge amount, say they are cut to 25%, starting right away, and going for this period.
That is 450k more units Sony has to get out, per month, on average, to catch the Wii.
That means making amazingly generous assumtions for Sony, they would need to get nearly 1 million units out the door per month.
To get to 70 million units in 2.5 years, there would have to be 1.85 million units sold per month worldwide, which is perhaps more outlandish than Wii sales dropping by 75%!
According to his prediction for the Wii, however, sales will average a bit less than right now (and before hitting the magic $200 mark?) but given the Wii average monthly sales to date, his prediction seems fair.
The DS will likely be replaced by 2011. The Wii will likely be replaced IN 2011.
I do believe he is right about the PS2, however, as it has a good library, and it is the weakest of the last gen consoles, making it a favorite in poorer countries.
I would, however, like to know how he got this idea of the PS3 doing so well, considering all of his other predictions seem to be based on something pretty solid. Maybe they are hiding a soon-to-be $250 price drop!

By 2011 Sony will have the PS4!! However instead of learning from their mistakes they’ll put a Cray super computer CPU in it and it will cost $400k. Unfortunately the Cray CPU isn’t really designed to play games so it produces frame rates slightly slower then the Xbox 360.

This prediction is so half baked, they outsold the 360 in one month b/c of a game that SHOULD have blown 360 out of the water, but didn’t (MGS4). If 360 wins August, then PS3 is buried, b/c nothing noteworthy for the 360 even came out this month.

I think Sony is great, most of my electronics are from Sony, even my 40″ Bravia LCD (where I play with my Xbox 360).
I just think Sony made not so good decisions with the PS3 and has yet to show its true power (if anyone can really unleash it…)
I think Microsoft is doing great by giving us what we want, games.
PS3 is “the best Blu-Ray Player” so if more people really wants to turn to the new HD format they may be getting a PS3 instead of a stand alone player, that will help Sony to maybe get to the 70 million, but think as well what happened with the UMD and that Sony has tried real hard to put its own format for movies. They have achieved that already, but maybe not at the best moment.
Let’s see what happens on 2011. Maybe then I’ll think about getting a PS3… (I’m planning on getting a PSP though).
As for the Wii… That’s a kids toy. True gamers really play a lot. Most of the people I know with a Wii play only Wii Sports, ha ha ha. And gamers that got a Wii because they thought it would suit their needs are now planning to get an Xbox 360.

LOL new games are taking more disc capacity now that’s why a lot of new games for Xbox 360 will be 2 or 3 disc. Due to the DVD9 being too limited just 8.5 GB while PS3 has Blu-ray Disc 50GB. PS3 is more than just showing power image how would Xbox 360 compete in coming year with games getting bigger and needing real next gen technology like Blu-ray Disc.

The really funny thing here is that by the time we reach the time when these day-dreams of a PS3 bright future in the next 2 or 3 years are supposed to happen the next next gen will have appeared.
Leaving the PS3 to supposedly blossom 1 whole generation behind the competition.
Dress it up however you like but a console based on an ancient Nvidia 7900gs chipset is already stone-age, nevermind looking at it when it’s another 3 years old.
Saddling the PS3 with the high margin niche Blu-ray drive is proving to be a huge mistake.

Can you really blame Sony for losing so much exclusives? Because of the price on the ps3 since its release, they have been losing BILLIONS of dollars. It wasn’t predicted until August of this year that they would actually profit from the Ps3. So with that in mind, I think it’s Sonys turn to make 360 exclusives multiplatform.

Also Future of Sega, how far behind is ps3 in sales from the 360? Take in mind it was released a year later than the 360. The ps3 will have a longer lifespan, even now we haven’t seen it’s full potential. While 360 users have to waste money on a new console (which will probably happen in 5 years after M$ totally abandons the 360), we’ll still be happily playing our PS3, likely with graphics better than now, hell prob even better than M$’s never console.

I personally own all 3 consoles and now more then ever I agree with this article. One of my systems died again last night for the 2nd time. I enjoy all 3 systems but one of them is built and performs like a 3rd rate product. Sadly, I really enjoy the games but I’m starting to feel abused on the products quality.
If this company does not start to provide a better piece of hardware to its user base, I have no doubt that it will see even less then as described in this article.

ok ppl i am on the microsoft side but before i had any consle i wanted a ps3 but i didnt buy it because of the price tag$$ so ended up getting a 360 but i looked at the positives better games and xbl (i also got it because i am a big fan of the halo series) as i was saying i am satisfied with my buy but i still would not mind a ps3. I think there is not a bright future for the xbox because most of the good ideas for xbox games have already been used up and because of the harware faliures like the rrod (my xbox has not gotten the rrod) As for the ps3 i dont care about blu-ray or the graphics i think the 360 offers good graphics as well ,and i am fine with standard quality television, movies, and gaming, heck i still play my original xbox. To wrap it all up i think both consles are great and so is the wii although i didn’t talk about it much its not bad more for smaller kids and it’s more of a family console. Yea everyone has their opinions so stop fighting about which console is best and go buy the console you like most.
