Sega boss claims Wii is full of crap – will MadWorld change all that?

Sega boss claims Wii is full of crap - will MadWorld change all that?If you’re a Wii owner, how do you feel about the “flood of crap” coming on to your console? You hadn’t noticed the crap? Well some people have, and the President of Sega is one of them.

The Wii may be winning the console war at this present moment due to being affordable, fun, and accessible by all, but it has to be said that games are not its strong point. Sure, there are some fantastic games on the system, the ones that everyone knows about and everyone has had a go on at least once, but there is also an extraordinary amount of crap. So says I, and so says Simon Jeffery, the president of Sega of America.

I actually like the Wii and what Nintendo has done for gaming. It’s a cheap machine that enables a whole new sector of society to get involved and interested in gaming, and the motion sensing control aspects of the Wii have ensured the console a place in history as the first console that everybody wants to have a go on.

But as Simon Jeffery explained to Venture Beat, these two aspects of the machine: cheapness and mainstream appeal, mean that a lot of crap makes its way on to the Nintendo console. He said:

The Wii is a very cost effective platform to experiment with. There is a lot of crap coming out for the Wii in general. But if it’s not a good game, it doesn’t sell. That flood of crap will die down as publishers become more coherent.

The Wii is a great opportunity for hitting hardcore gamers. No one is doing that. With “MadWorld” from Platinum Games, we are trying to show that millions of Wii games want to move on to mature games. They don’t have to have an Xbox 360 to do that.

I’m not too sure whether that “flood of crap” will ever die down, as there will always be a games developer eager to try and make a fast buck by putting out a low budget game for the masses. We need to just hope that the first-class games punctuate the Wii’s lifespan often enough to ensure the crap doesn’t overtake the good.

Jeffery obviously thinks that MadWorld, a game that Sega is publishing, is going to be one of those gems amongst the mess, and that may well be the case. MadWorld is definitely a game for the more mature amongst us with its depictions of a dystopian society where blood lust seems to reign supreme. Just ask the the Daily Mail.

Jeffery’s hope that one game is going to be enough for hardcore gamers to gravitate towards the Wii is off the mark though, as most Xbox 360 owners spit on the Nintendo console and call it names. The consoles all know their place in the order of things, and the role of the Wii is to provide casual gamers an in to the industry. Which means crap games will always be present.

The PS3 has no crap because it takes a small fortune to make a game for it. That’s also why the PS3 (and the 360 to a lesser extent) are trading exclusives.

I don’t know why you worry about the crap on a system though. You seem like a Sony fanboy that had the PS2 and the mosnterous amount of bad games that came with it.

However, smart consumers can learn to do a bit of research on products they wish to buy and pick something from that research, not just grab whatever is out (or go by blind brand loyalty).

I’m sure all of us will hope you can learn to ignore the bad games, and pay attention to the good games.

yes i notice as well about the wii, and it’s true it just putting out crappy games all aimed at the simple mind. i have a wii but it’s not played much , i play my 360 , it hit’s hard with good titles. the wii makers thinks they are going in right direction but it will soon fade and the hard hitter will hit back .

Yeah, because, you know, No More Heroes, Metroid Prime 3, Brawl, Fatal Frame IV, Tenchu 4, Fire Emblem, The Conduit, Twilight Princess, and now Madworld, etc. are all for casual gamers, right? Maybe you should try looking into something past your raving fanboyism. It’s called the “and” philosophy.

Wow, you noticed the PS2 had a lot of bad games as well. It had a hugh library but a good amount of it was crap. It was my reason for choosing xbox over the PS2. Development cost on that generation was a lot cheeper. I went through a dry spell for a while were I never bothered with video games. My last system before going to Xbox was Sega Genesis. So when I came back I had no opinion when I was trying to choose so I look at both critically and I just noticed how the games that were multiplatform just looked so much better all the time, the online was just amazing and it had a hard drive. There was not the vast library available when compared to PS2 but it was no slouch as it did have a good selection to choose from. Xbox had it’s share of bad games but it probably amounted to about 40% of the systems games. PS2 on the other hand had 60% bad games. So yeah you are right. It does takes some cash to produce a game for 360/PS3 so it can’t be crap or else your not making your money back and at todays development cost you can’t come with no crap. Crap is reserved for the arcade sectoin of the 360 and the same goes for the other 2. So it begs to question, with development cost so high is there room for 3 consoles given the fact that PS3 and 360 seem to share the same games. Personally, I wouldn’t mind it Microsoft and Sony just dropped their differences, got together and just came up with one bad ass console that would kick a PC’s ass.

There is ony 1 problem with that. Can Japanese and Americans get along?
