GC 2008: New 160GB PS3, EyePet and free Music Video service announced

By Mike Ferro

GC 2008: New 160GB PS3, EyePet and free Music Video service announced The GC 2008 Leipzig Sony press conference is full of big announcements.  I thought a new PSP model announcement was big enough but other big announcements include a new PS3 model, a new game and a new service.  It seems like Sony was holding half of its announcements from E3 for this conference. Details after the jump.

Sony has unveiled a new PS3 that will be hitting the US and Europe, near the end of this year. The new PS3 will have a whopping 160GB hard drive along with a Dualshock 3 controller. Now this is where the details get a bit hazy, it seems the US version may get a downloadable game Pain along with a copy of Uncharted Drake’s Fortune all for the original 80GB price of $499, awesome.

However the European 160GB PS3 version may get 70 Euros worth of downloadable games included with their version. As I said details are scarce currently but we will clarify it as soon as possible.

A new game for the casual audience was announced called EyePet from the guys at Sony London Studios. Basically its one of those virtual pet games like Nintendog. I know what your thinking, but you know it may not be my cup of tea or yours but it just might be a hit with the casual gamers or the younglings.

Apparently you can interact, pet, gesture at your pet via the Playstation Eye camera. Sounds interesting enough, I can already see the exact target audience that will pick up this game.

Also lastly, Sony announced a free Music Video service brought to you by VidZones. Apparently you can watch streaming music videos through this service and watch whatever video you want at anytime, and get this, its totally free! Wow, very nice Sony.

So far there is no announcement for this service here in the US but don’t fret we maybe getting our own MTV on demand soon.

Perry: “Sony has no chance of making money on the PS3″

Acclaim boss David Perry has said that Sony will not be able to make a decent profit on sales of the PlayStation 3 due to selling the system at a loss.

During his keynote speech at GCDC yesterday, the outspoken games developer claimed that the company has lost more money on the PlayStation 3 than it made during the five year peak sales period of the PlayStation 2.

“Because of the cost of making the PlayStation 3 and because they sold it at a loss, Sony basically has pretty much no chance of making money on the PS3, because it’s lost more money than they made during the entire peak of the PlayStation 2 - it’s not going to happen again for Sony,” stated Perry.

“If they release the PlayStation 4 and have an even more expensive console and raise the cost of games by ten dollars, that would not be good,” he added.

Perry suggested that Sony’s much talked about ten-year plan for the PlayStation 3 is the company’s chance to claw back costs of development in the long-term.

“So this is going to force them to make the PS3 last longer and they’re kind of positioning to do that,” he said.

      CAD you’re just jealous.

You should be “CAP” not CAD, because all you do is “copy and paste”

Yep, external entity commenting on things only Sony really knows.

      This just in!

‘Play-doh manufacturer Hasbro have just said that MS is due to fold in 2011, yes the entire company! it was a big shock to investors…’

when was the last time acclaim made revolutionary/best selling game that justifies a comment like that, $500 is about 270GBP, i bought my 40gb ps3 for 320GBP nearly a year ago which is about $600 and 4x storage and cheaper price that is a great deal

This 160gb system is interesting, however I already own a 60gb so it doesn’t effect me at all. The free music videos really sound interesting, but I don’t live in Europe. I will say it is about time Sony paid a little more attention to Europe though. You guys deserve to get something first. I have a dog, but I could shoot it and get an Eye pet. lol.

    13. Wylie:

I wonder why he didn’t include the keypad in the article? This is something that I might actually buy. I will have to wait to see the price, but I could see myself using that!

    14. winner:

Free music video service? Well if they include Duran Duran’s ‘Girls On Film’ and Massive Attack’s ‘Be Thankful’ then I’ll definitely take a look.

Rubbed quite a few out watching those clips when I was younger….
