GC 2008: PS3 Home guaranteed to be out this year and free forever
The Playstation Home is the highly anticipated Second Life like social networking application set to head towards the PS3. There has been much speculation regarding Home, such as if it will release this year or remain free. Well it seems Sony is putting it’s cards on the table.
At the Game Convention in Leipzig, IGN had a chance to talk to Martin Van Der Meulen, a Producer for Home and boy did he have some interesting things to say. First of all Meulen “guarantees” that Playstation Home will be out before the end of the year, which is a big promise.
Home has been delayed a couple times and has been teased for about two years. A final release of the product is what everyone is looking forwards to and should definitely welcome this news. I mean the guy did give his “guarantee,” right?
Another speculation has been with the booming cost of development people have speculated if there will be some sort of fee or charge for using Home. The reassuring answer is Home is free, and will remain free practically forever. I am sure Home will be littered with advertisements but I suppose if things like that don’t bother you much its not such a big deal.
Meulen also talks about how users can acquire clothing, furniture and other accessories besides purchasing premium content. He indicates these items can be either unlocked or rewarded through other games. I highly suspect the platinum trophy will be the one to unlock items as well as leveling up your gamercard.

The feature I am most interested in is how game spaces will be integrated with Home. We have seen Uncharted Drake’s Fortune, Resistance and Warkhawk game spaces but I am interested how successfully third party studios will take advantage of this feature.

Wow i can’t wait to get HOME. PLAYSTATION 3 is going will obliterate the competition aka as Xbox Live. I always knew Trophy was going to be more rewarding than anything Xbox Live has to offer imagine beating the game and winning a bunch of Trophies and by unlocking them you will get some free content that’s pretty damn sweet, i actually thought Xbox Live was like when i first got it but it was just useless gamer score. Also i bet a lot developers will have Home Space soon when they realize how great it will be. I think Home will big a huge hit with everyone and it might bring a lot of new gamers and non gaming people. A lot of people from websites like MySpace,Youtube, Second life and many others would by the PS3 just to chat with friends and joke around. I am so damn excited OMG Microsoft better prepare for the biggest gaming assault in history it will always be Sony who will release real innovation like Home.

Most everyone is building up Home to be the next best thing since sliced bread…. Users will be the ultimate judge however there’s not many of them and those who are really aren’t saying much…. Could it be that beta testers entered into some sort of “keep-your-mouth-shut” clause with Sony OR could it be that there’s not that much to Home….

Guaranteeing it will be out this year? Well if this happens, then it may be a boon for PS3 for the christmas period (I’m not politically correct enough to call it the ‘holiday period’), granted that it lives up to expectations. If it does not come out this year, I can imagine that quite a few PS3 owners will be a little pissed about being lied to.

xbox 360 does not have the capability to run somthing like home + they would have to shut down xbox live and change the dashboard settings to get it to even be able to work. But i still like xbox360 as much as ps3
