Xbox 360: Too Human – president Dyack gets banned from NeoGAF

August 23, 2008

Xbox 360: Too Human - president Dyack gets banned from NeoGAF Wow, Too Human, an Xbox 360 exclusive game that launched recently, has been getting well, lackluster reviews, and gamers have taken pitchforks to this game on the web. On every forum you hit from NeoGAF to Gametrailers, gamers are bashing the game up and down.

It seems Dennis Dyack president and founder of Silicon Knights, have hit back at the gamers accusing them of putting the game Too Human down without even playing it. On the latest 1up podcast when he says “I was basically calling out people who had no way of assessing the game…” So, does that mean the game is actually not as terrible as what most people are saying?

Well, all I can say about the game is wait for our review on it, coming very soon. I wouldn’t want to spoil anything.

Dyack also attacks NeoGAF by saying not only is NeoGAF the worst forum on the Internet, it needs to get shut down.  Dyack said this in an interview with Videogaming247. Big words to one of the largest video game related forums on the planet. NeoGAF has such a huge presence in the gaming sphere, studios go on there to make random announcements about upcoming games.

What happened next was NeoGAF hit back at Dyack by permanently banning him from the forum with an angry letter from one of the moderators:

As Confucius once said, “the photoshop cat juggles a ball of yarn, and unravels it all over his face.” You are Baldur, Denis. You’re the poorly animated bald Norse technogod, the Übermensch with a thousand pointless book references misunderstood by the dirty proles who aren’t worthy enough to judge you.

Your favorite Nietzsche quote, “he who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby become a monster,” is one you’ve fallen victim to yourself, if your opinion of this site is to be taken to heart. In these pitiable confrontations with us you’ve proven to be the monster of gaming development, a sore on the industry and a squanderer of your subordinates’ time and effort. Through all this, through this self-inflicted PR nightmare, you’ve conquered vast new frontiers of unwarranted hyperbole and desperate pseudo-intellectual grasping. Buy an unaccredited doctorate, change your given name to Derek, and take up the reins; Derek Smart would eagerly defer to the greatness of Dr. Dyack.

What is an appropriate action to take in response to the man who continues to post here? I won’t be tolerating a second retconned “social experiment,” a second call for NeoGAF’s closing, or a second “worst forum” insult. You decided to ignore the option for real terms for your pointless tag bet, so with the majority of reviews condemning your magnum opus to mediocrity I’ll claim a suitable prize by telling you to get the hell off NeoGAF.

Yikes! I expected some sort of backlash from NeoGAF, especially when you openly insult them in an interview on another site. It seems things are getting heated up and a quick survey on NeoGAF shows there seems to be little love for Dyack as users are parading around with Avatars and sigs poking fun at Dyack.

I wonder if Dyack managed to hype the game up to a point where it became a target for attack by making it harder to live up to expectations much like Haze did, or did his stunt on the forum create more disdain for Too Human. I think that would be an interesting experiment in itself.

This game does have a niche audience. Metacritic scores ranged from 88 down to 42, with an average of 68. That’s hardly lacklustre if you compare it with what Haze and Lair got. I will probably rent it before deciding whether to buy it or not.

But Dyack does have a point. Many were declaring this game dead on arrival without even playing it. I guess the ‘cool’ thing to do is to attack a guy who’s proud and passionate about his game.

  2. SW:

Meh I have not & will not ever play the game based on the strength of the demo – which is to say, sucked my ass.

I think its funny when these big game director/creator types after months of ‘this is going to be the best damn game ever!!!oneone buy it you’ll love it!!oneone’ get a fat taste of reality and then have a little childish hissy fit when alot of people don’t like it.

In the past few months I think i’ve seen 3 types of response ::

1: Epic response of “WTF?!?!” when gears didn’t get 9.5s across the board (cuz it just ain’t that good)
    2: Capcom’s “ITS TEH PIRACY!!!”
& 3: You’ve never even played it!! We have Russian psychics remote viewing jooz!!

Still, makes for fun reading :)

  3. Piracy:

Wow i just downloaded the game from http://www.torrentz.com/search?q=too+human is not that bad but the control kind of suck. I guess since i only pay for the DVD9 disc $2 i liked a bit but is not worth buying. http://www.mod-chip.com/Default.aspx?tabid=54&List=1&CategoryID=1&Level=a&SortField=ProductName%2cProductName http://www.xbox-modchips.com/

  4. hamburger:

where are the 360 fanboys who bashed the ps3 when Haze bombed..HAHAHAHAHAHA

This game is an even bigger failure considering how the devs bragged about it and its 10year development.
If it takes them 10years to create this shit-bomb they are trying to pass as a game, then they should probably start another business..

  5. Arvis:

Wow, not only does he tarnish his professional reputation by wasting time and money on mediocrity, but he obliterates his personal reputation by turning into lowest of all life forms: an internet troll. *shakes head*
    What was he thinking?

And now, time for my new sketch, “If Kevin Were a PS3 Fanboy!” Enjoy…:
“This was supposed to be one of those holiday system sellers, wasn’t it? *smirks*
I guess powerful graphics chips and TEH LIVE aren’t going to bring the gamers in droves like MS would have us believe. If DVD9 can only bring us games of this low caliber, I’ll pass in favor of the better games machine AND better multimedia device from Sony. Thanks.”

  6. Bourne:

where is Kev, has he finally thrown in the towel and bought a ps3?

  7. darkwhitehair:

kevin doesnt visit the site on weekends… which is very “helpfull” for this particular weekend…

damn… although… I was never interested in Norse Mythology… I love Greek Mythology.. which is on a game… I think you all know…

so far.. the reviews that Ive read and saw… too much time to spend on item management and dumb enemies… I didnt like it in DMC… I doubt I would like it in this game…

oh well… back to GOD OF WAR !!!

    yay…

letss hope Geow !! is better…

  8. Maylon:

I am about 8 hours in and I am honestly enjoying this game. I see alot of people do not get the controls, but it is that way as to avoid incessant button mashing ala God of War.

  9. Mr Sparkle:

Maylon, button mashing won’t get u through God of War unless u go on easy and keep repeating levels because u keep gettin killed and somehow luckily get through.

Clearly u havn’t played the game

  10. Ivan_PSP:

Too Human is %100 pure garbage not worth buying not even worth looking at it sucks. I downloaded from torrentz.com for my flashed Xbox 360.

  11. winner:

I don’t believe this game bombed at all. Sure it didn’t live up to expectations, but it wasn’t exactly a ‘bad’ game. As I said earlier, there is a niche market with this game. Unlike Haze and Lair, which nearly everybody hated.

  12. SW:

Only 13 points between haze and too human on metacritic ;) 15 between it and lair.

They’re either all niche games, or suckage.

    I choose the latter.

  13. BRad:

I don’t know if its fair to say Too Human is a niche game despite getting a 5.5/10 from Gamespot or 6.5 from Gametrailers and call Haze a crap game because it got a 6.2 from Gametrailers.

If you watch the reviews for both of them they got low scores because of camera, control, story issues.

That type of game style “Diablo” is niche, but Too Human is no niche my friend its just a bad attempt at being like Diablo.

  14. CAD:

I have not bought it but I have played the Demo and I thought it wasn’t that bad. It’s entertaining enough and Personally I don’t usually get into story lines because I’m constantley being distracted at home so i juat play for the fun. Hell I can’t even tell you what the Halo Franchise is complely about in detail. As for the controls, it is weird at frist but it’s fairly easy. Using he right stick is good because you avoid button mashing. I don’t think there is much wrong with this game just from playing the demo but it is truly far from being bad. One day I’ll rent it.

  15. CAD:

I agree with the dude on some points but really Epic should have kept their mouth shut and kept it in court. Really bad on Epic’s part. Dyack is also a bit outspoken at time and I’m not sure if he is hurting his own game or if it helps and it sparks intrest to see what all the fuss is about.

  16. CAD:

Ivan you still have not revealed which one of the Blorge employees you are? Only Blorge emplyees show up in Blue.

  17. CAD:

I’s also funny how “Piracy” also shows up in Blue and talks about downloading it form Torrentz and so does “Ivan_PSP” who is also in blue. You guys cant fool me.

  18. BRad:

    @winner,

No I didn’t forget that, gwad if you think 7.8 is good, then you must think Haze getting a 7.9 from Game Masters and 7.0 from Gamepro and Gamedaily spectacular.

Both games are terrible, controlling your attack with the right analog stick? I’ve played the demo and its like pulling teeth getting Baulder to attack the right enemy, it’s so inacurate.

You don’t get the satisfaction like a button masher when you hit them with every press of a button.

Also whats with the 2 min. mandatory death scene you have to watch, ugh..

There are camera issues, the graphics do look average.

I can’t say it’s any better than Haze or any other crappy game.
I don’t see the need in defending such a crap of a game. It lacks polish and has lots of glitches.

  19. BRad:

    @CAD,

ummm… you do realize the field Name is html sensitive? Thats why you can make your name into a link = blue.

  20. CAD:

    Brad

Are you sure because I have tried to change the colour myself and it never works. Also I really can’t comfirm this but I wrote about it before not to long ago and I went looking for it and I believe they deleted what I said. Brad if you can change the colour of your name I’ll believe you. Otherwise I’m now starting to think that they bait their own site to start controversy.

  21. CAD:

    Brad

I will agree that it is hard to control who you are hitting and getting acuracy with the right stick is a bit hard. I just don’t really know how I fell about the right stick. Games like Boxing use it and so did Def Jam and I was not a fan of the control. But you can still do damage with it in this game.

  22. BRad:

I think you just put whatever web page link into the website area below the mail.
If it works my name should be clickable to google.com

  23. CAD:

    Brad,

OK, You have made your point and I now understand how it works. Thanks.

  24. CAD:

I retract what ever I said before. Sorry Blorge.

  25. Norm:

They need to create logins for this site to stop the posers.

  26. Matt:

    Hardcore gamers are morons.

    QED

Also, if NeoGAF is so big and important, it’s strange I’ve never even heard of its existance before today.

    Yes, very big indeed.

  27. Matt:

Oh, that’s why I’ve never heard of it… it’s full of the same crap posted here in the replies to this article.

    Not missing anything there.

  28. Arvis:

    Matt,

You’ve lumped an entire demographic into one absolute judgment, therefore your are automatically wrong. You’re also not doing a very good job of covering over Dyack’s lack of professionalism nor his development of an exclusive lemon on the 360.

On a related note, however, the more reviews I read of this Too Human game, the more I am convinced that I would probably enjoy it. I tend to swing more towards deep niche titles, but shy away from the Halos and the God of Wars of the world.

    -Arvis

  29. Maylon:

    @Mr Sparkles

I have played God of War, and im sorry but I played it on hard and its a button masher.

  30. SW:

Wouldn’t it make sense to compare too human with something other than god of war?

Its kinda like comparing cooking meat in a microwave and an oven. Sure you get cooked meat in both cases, but in very different ways.

Hows about Street Fighter 2 (pick your flavor) compared against Soul Calibur (anyone have the ps3 version? Is Darth Vader the shizzle? :) ).

  31. Mr Sparkle:

    @Maylon

then it must have taken u ages to complete and u must have got really lucky. U R the only person I hav ever heard refer to GOW as a “button masher”
