Gamer Blorge Review: Does Braid live up to all the hype on Xbox 360?

By Mike Ferro

Gamer Blorge Review: Does Braid live up to all the hype? Braid, a whimsical bite sized downloadable game for the Xbox 360 is hailed by many as being pure genius while being both fun and frustrating. Today we take a look at what all the fuss is about and if it is worth your hard earned money. Hit the jump for the review.

What is Braid? Well lets look at the definition of braid, its a complex structure or pattern that flows, twists or winds as if they were interwoven. Much like that definition, the game Braid interweaves time and puzzles together to form something that borders on sheer brilliance.

A small disclaimer, this game is not for those with lack of patience or brain power because this game will challenge the fundamental way you think about time while frustrating you beyond belief.

Braid’s main character Tim, is on a mission to find a princess and the only way to advance is to solve complex time manipulation puzzles and unlock a piece of a puzzle. Basically, its a puzzle within a puzzle, you have to solve the level in order to get a piece of the puzzle.

The basic gameplay mechanics are simple, much like Super Mario, you can do your basic jumps, and you can jump on top of your enemies which bear a striking resemblance to the Goombas in Mario. However in addition to the basic mechanics there is the time manipulation ability.

Interestingly enough this game pays homage to Super Mario in more than one way, the platforming is similar to Mario, the rescue the princess plot line is also similar and the puzzles remind me of the ones found in Mario vs Donkey Kong, for those who have played it will know what I am talking about.

Tim has the ability to rewind time, indefinitely. At first you will most likely use this ability to correct mistakes like falling of a cliff but later use it to solve complex puzzles. With each level or world, you discover a new ability such as creating a shadow clone of yourself.

The shadow clone basically does the same actions you have done and in utilizing this ability you have the opportunity to solve one of the puzzles. I don’t want to spoil to much, but this is the first time I have seen in a game where you have to commit suicide in order to advance the game.

The story invokes strong emotions with very clean and simple visuals, at times you will feel despair and yet at other times you will feel elated. The ending is one of the most ambiguous endings you will witness and to some, that may not be enough and want more closure or clarification.

For those looking for a traditional action platformer with a structured story look else where, because what you will get is a non traditional piece of modern art. All traditional conventions are thrown out, you have infinite lives, you can pick whichever world or level you wish to play, and you will spend more time rewinding time then platforming.

As well as being very short, the game does lack replayability, as once you solve the puzzles throughout the seven worlds, the surprise or challenge is no longer there.

Braid manages to blend platforming, puzzle solving and artistic story telling into a small package and it manages to deliver well. The game does come with a stiff price tag of $15, a little more expensive then the other bite sized games you can get from XBL. Most people should be able to complete the game within two to three hours.

Hadn’t heard ANYTHING about Braid, until today when Yahtzee / Zero Punctuation reviewed it. I love those reviews.

Ah, winner, I find that the less obscene you are, the funnier you get. You are a master of telegraphing sarcasm over the internet.

    10. The Future of Sega:

What a joke! This piece of shit doesn’t even deserve a review. I’d rather go back to Pokemon and capture a Charizard or Mewtwo than to play Braid!

……what a disgrace :P……more uninspired video game developers looking to steal money from the ignorant :P

    11. Rin:

Future of Sega, you wouldn’t like this game anyways, cause it requires a thing we like to call intelligence. Intelligence is when you can THINK and play games at the same time, instead of doing derivative shit over and over like in FPS and other retard action games you probably spend hours spamming.

So go away. Braid’s devs aren’t selling to people like you anyways.
