Platform exclusives ending - PS3, Xbox 360 & Wii to share more games

Consoles have often lived and died by the exclusives that the manufacturers have secured for them, but that era is now coming to an end. One universal console may be nowhere nearer to happening, but it looks as though the PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii will be sharing more games in the future than ever before.
Some would argue that the original Playstation and the Playstation 2 owed much of their success to the securing of several huge franchises. There’s certainly no doubt that the likes of Grand Theft Auto, Metal Gear Solid, and Final Fantasy all helped shift many millions of Playstation consoles.
But while Metal Gear Solid remains a Playstation exclusive, the only reason that is the case is because its creator Hideo Kojima doesn’t think the game would fit on anything less than a Blu-ray disc. As for the other two, Grand Theft Auto eventually appeared on the original Xbox, with Grand Theft Auto 4 being released simultaneously on the PS3 and Xbox 360. And even Final Fantasy is no longer the sole possession of Playstation owners, with the news that Final Fantasy XIII will also be coming to the Xbox 360.
There are a few reasons for this change of strategy by third-party publishers. The first being that there is still no clear winner in this generation of consoles. This essentially means that to maximise sales of a particular game, a software developer has to release said game on at least two of the three home consoles currently on the market.
There is also the issue of costs. While making games for previous generations of consoles was relatively affordable, the technology in the PS3 and Xbox 360 means that to get the game looking and playing as well as it should costs millions in development and labour.
The Nintendo Wii is a strange one in this sense as it’s cheaper and easier to develop for, meaning more games appear on the system without appearing on any other console. Unfortunately, most of them are crap.
Exclusives obviously haven’t disappeared for good, but it’s becoming limited to the properties owned by the companies involved. Which is why even though Bungie doesn’t seem interested in making any more Halo games in the near future, Microsoft can just ask Gearbox to do so instead.
There is also the timed exclusive, which Microsoft has secured for Rock Band 2 (probably for a hefty fee), which while not perfect, can give the advantage to one or other of the competing consoles.
Oh, and then there is LittleBigPlanet, a definite exclusive to the PS3 which Sony expects to drive sales of the Playstation 3 massively when it is released in October.
But generally speaking, exclusives are on the wane, and that’s a good thing for gamers, and possibly a bad thing for the console manufacturers, who overnight are losing their advantage over the competition.

I agree, I attack Dave all the time but I saw nothing why these guys are going off on him. It’s pure fact. If it cost so much to make games and most are on both systems then what is the point of 3 systems in the market. Nintendo is obviously different from the rest and Microsoft has added value to gaming with online play, movies/tv, rumble, Hard drive, music, XNA, etc. and Sony just copied everyone. I really wish Sony would have differenciated itself from the rest with something fresh and new other then just a format on which games are played. Adding a free music video service was somethig I will give credit to Sony for. That is a first.

I’m not saying Microsoft does not copy ideas. They just don’t do it as much and a little copying is warrented by not do everything exactly the same. For God sake have some Identy. Nintendo I never attacked because Nintendo has contrubited to the gaming industry before Sony or Microsoft was ever in the game. But really Lips is a game and It doesn’t change gaming all that much. At least Lips improved on Singstars offering by adding Ipod and Zune Support and and interactive mic. Sony Copies Online makes it free but it’s not better. 360 games also look better then PS3 games that are multiplatform and there is a slue of evidence all over the web on that and Sony came out after and gloated about this Cell that is no good for gaming. Had Microsoft not come out with a built in hard drive you Sony boy would still be fiddeling with memory cards. That is game changing. Sega started Online game and Microsoft picked up on that and made it amazing. Then Sony did it and it’s not a good. Microsoft Came with arcade titles. Then Sony coppied it and the Library is a joke compared to 360. Then Microsoft also came with Movie dowloads and TV show downloads. Sony Owns movie studio and never thought about doing it till Microsoft did it. Now they have movies. In game music from your hard drive is a 360 first then Sony coppied it. Nindendo makes Mii’s and Sony comes with HOME. Yes MS copid that as well but given that Nintentdo copied online gaming to a lesser extent lets call that a trade off. At least microsoft is bringing avtars while you still wait for HOME. I could go on but it’s pure embarassament for Sony. CAD. Your an idiot. Sony copied Ms with online gaming? PSone came out 14 years ago, PS2 8 years ago. My ps2 had online gaming and a hard drive (it didnt do much but it was a 40gb). In 6 years Sony had 2 consoles out. MS 1st xbox came out in 2001. Tell me exactly where Sony got their crsytal ball from and was able to copy MS.

@ Spidey, SonySoft or MicrOny would be a kick arse system, but both parties are too stubborn to share profits. Probably one reason why there isn’t a Blu-Ray player for 360, as I am assuming Sony would get a slice of the pie there. The network adaptor was released on July 19, 2001 in Japan (together with the Hard disk drive) , in August 2002 in North America and in June 2003 in Europe. As you can see that is why the PS3 had a EXPANSION BAY in the back for a hard drive and Network Adapter and PS2 came out first than Xbox did, Xbox Live was launched in November 2002.
Lies - That Sony copy online and made it free Sony has always had the service free which was launched before Xbox Lie.

Xbox 360 red light of death is still a huge problem. Sony has free charge for all PS3 controllers. While Xbox 360 owners needs to buy AA batteries since they not included and they over heat with the Xbox Charge Kit.
Microsoft copy backwards compatibility from Sony. If Sony hadn’t done that on PS1 they wouldn’t done it either. Xbox Live Arcade is full of PC Games like Bejeweled junks. While Sony has PS1 games there own games not rip off Miniclip flash games.

lol all 3 are simply small computers playing….you guessed it computer games. All the sweet features that all the console fanboys rave about were done and done years ago on desktop computers. The idea was to make a cheap machine that will pop in the mass market to push software sales for PROFIT. Sony and Microsoft got the software attachment but their machines are to expensive for true mass market appeal. Nintendo has the mass market appeal but the MONEY is camping with Sony and Microsoft. Nintendo is the dysfunctional player in the game space selling its silly little machine with almost 10 year old tech to old people, fat women and 8 year olds… all of which (bar xmas) spend very little on software. In about a week or so Microsoft (you all know it) is going in for the KILL with its 199 arcade. It wants to be the number one gift for 8 year olds and seeing as half the planet has a wii already… It looks like its gonna work. Also Xbox live is full of squeeky voices (12 year olds) to welcome these kids abord. All Sony has is a bunch of fanboys who become less important with each passing day. (old is not cool) These smart wealthy nerds who demand the best tend to not reproduce like the rest of us that have a life. xbox live is DESIGNED with kids in mind (No Browser means No Porn) (Its a pay service means you can and will be Banned if you get out of line) I know all to well as my 12 year old demanded LIVE be renewed…So he would not loose contact with his friends…Did you get that!!!! its about friends not tech.

My boy got banned from the Halo video capture feature (forever) for teabaging a glitching elite sprite. They made the Video and were passing it around for a few giggles. Microsoft got wind of it and pulled the plug… no exceptions and a lesson learned. Nothing is 100% safe and as parents we must police our own kids…but make no mistake xbox live has cops walking the beat.
Sony and Nintendo to make up for their lack of features has a wide open web browser (no police) wide open chat (no police) and I would guess near 100% of the pedo set. No place for kids…. and a special shame for Nintendo as its marketed for kids

Sony has also.

creating the most famous controller of all time that hardly needs any huge change.

I am considering the same as CAD. This place used to be fun, but it’s been overtaken by the likes of Love, and Ivan has become more vocal in his idiocy lately (although the lager thing was fun). Sure we got into a few arguments but it’s all forgotten in the next post.

Love, this place is terrible. Alot of the time poorly thought out articles, or poorly explained.
I must concede in the midst of the articles here there are sometimes 1 or 2 legitimate points made, and I really wish the writers of those articles would think more before posting, and flesh out their valid points while removing the rubbish that often surrounds it.
This site is only good to see what rubbish has been written and the retarded nonsensical comment Ivan_PSP has submitted in response, alot of the time.
Only because Ivan_PSP always goes full retard, makes 0 sense and is the definition of a person blinded by their own fervour and irrational loyalty.
I would like to see one of the bloggers here to write a piece.. all about our favourite full retard Ivan, collecting his best of moments. because, he really is a laugh when you read his poor grammar his utterly fallacious arguments and lack of coherent or recognisable logic.
Seriously, is Ivan actually like that? or is he just putting on a very hilarious, consistent satirical act. Showing the extremes capable of those beastly little creatures that lurk all over the internet from the computer in their mothers basements known best as the fanboy. My hat really goes off to him if this is the case, to keep it up for so long, and if it isn’t an act (which I fear is the case)…. well it just shocks me to know people like him actually exist.
