The future of Halo is uncertain - a silver lining in the sky?

By Mike Ferro

The future of Halo is uncertain - Is there a silver lining in the sky? There has been very little in the way of news regarding a new Halo project that is headed up by Peter Jackson, until now that is. Its been assumed that the development for the game has not yet started and things are sort of in a limbo at this point. Now it seems things might be coming together with some movement in Microsoft’s camp. Full details after the jump.

According Kotaku Gearbox Director of Technology Corrinne Yu has verified she is leaving Gearbox for a job at Microsoft recently. Now rumors are flying around that the Halo project she will be working on is indeed the Peter Jackson Halo project. Yu is considered an expert when it comes to game engines and has worked on various projects such as Brothers in Arms and Borderlands specifically utilizing the Unreal engine.

This could be a clear indication Microsoft is ready to start some development for the Peter Jackson Halo project starting with the engine. Could Microsoft be considering using the Unreal Engine or developing a brand new engine from the ground up for this project?

This new engine could also be used to develop Halo 4 as well, if the rumors are true that Bungie will not be developing Halo 4. Bungie owns the engine used for the Halo franchise and with speculation that Gearbox will be heading up the Halo 4 project for the next iteration of the Xbox 720 things are starting to make some sense.

Who better to develop a new engine that Gearbox would eventually use than Gearbox’s former engine guru Corrinne Yu, makes perfect sense, right? This sort of leaves Bungie out there with a big question mark as to what the big project that was almost revealed at E3 was. The word on the street is Bungie is working on a new multiplatform (PS3/Xbox 360) IP with possibly EA as the publisher.

We will see how things play out on this interesting development unfolds because King Kong has nothing on Peter Jackson.

I would be more excited if it were Valve or Infinity Ward taking the reigns, I am not sure what to think of Gearbox.

First off I would like to say that I am appalled that Bungie or Microsoft decides to release new Halo games once every console! Are you idiots trying to alienate your hardcore fanbase!?

If Halo 4 comes out only on the Xbox 720, then I’m done with the Halo series. Halo 3 didn’t live up to my standards. In my opinion I consider Halo 3 to be Halo 2.5. But not only that I shoved out a chunk of my money to purchase both a PS3 AND Xbox 360.

Given the current situtations with both consoles, I see no reason to upgrade to Xbox 720 or PS4. The only reason why I upgraded to Xbox 360 was for wireless controllers, which my Xbox didn’t have.

Other than that, Gears of War means nothing to me. Ten years from now no one will remember or even speak of that game because it’s only for serious nerds………

Secondly, if EA develops ANYTHING for Playstation 3, I will not buy not. I don’t care what it is. The reputation of EA is atrocious! The Orange Box for PS3 clearly showed their stupidity and arrogance!

Honestly I would be glad to see Halo arrive on PS3, but without EA’s rotten hands developing it.

I think that Microsoft will hire an elite team of game developers to work on Halo 4. I personal don’t think it will be better than the previous three.
