Mirrors Edge: How Sony acquired PS3 exclusives from EA

Mirrors Edge: How Sony acquired PS3 exclusives from EA A couple weeks ago we reported that a German site had an interview with Dave Reeves big boss of Sony Europe, where he was quoted as stating Mirrors Edge will be a PS3 timed exclusive and would release on Xbox 360 and PC later. Since then there has been denial from EA’s part, now we hear Sony’s side of the story today.

According to Eurogamer Sony clarified the issue by stating there was indeed a miscommunication of sorts. There is no exclusivity regarding the PS3 version of Mirrors Edge over the Xbox 360 or the PC version, however there is something else that is exclusive.

Apparently the PS3 version of Mirrors Edge will receive exclusive DLC content for that game. This reaffirms my theory Sony has something worked out with EA, after EA’s last financial report showed the PS3 is EA’s major bread earner.

FIFA 09 had exclusive content and now Mirrors Edge will have exclusive content, what is the reason for this? Sony has made it well known they do not pay for exclusivity but they are willing to fund development in exchange for exclusivity. However EA just doesn’t seem like the type of publisher that would need help funding Mirrors Edge, so what gives?

Sony would not pay a studio or publisher $50 million like Microsoft did with GTA IV to secure exclusive DLC. Historically because of this reason many potential exclusives have been lost. Just recently Sony reaffirms this decision by indicating a stronger focus on first party studios more then ever.

Just like in the case with Microsoft you really can’t secretly get away with dumping millions of dollars for exclusive content, with financial reports being generated regularly. Also, once you make a public claim that you do not pay for exclusives every studio out there knows and realizes this as well, so its quite impossible to publicly announce one thing and do something else without backlash.

This one is quite baffling indeed, could EA really be showing subtle favoritism towards the PS3 in exchange for lax royalties from PS2, PSP and PS3 titles?

Don’t know don’t care. All I care about is exclusive Fallout 3 DLC.

  2. James:

And DLC really not what you call PS3 exclusives. Misleading title lol. A real console exclusive from EA would be like Left 4 Dead and Red Alert 3. The former of which could be timed, but no less exclusive for a time.

  3. noob:

Could all turn out to be an exclusive Demo on the PSN or something.

Well it shows the sony Just give developers great console and never forces anyone to develop on it console. So many games could have been PS3 exclusives like Final fantasy, GTA IV, Assasins creed and so many others games but because microsoft opened there big wallet, they made it muitiplatform. I respect sony for not forceing anyone and people that are loyal will develope exclusives for PS3 and developes that know certain games can only be done or PS3 will do exclusive and people that just want to repay sony for something they did. Sony you have my respect but i still believe if you get the chance to take exclusive, espiecally exclusive like GTA IV, take advantage, and you will get even more sales.

james – this site does this type of garbage-journalism all the time. if they can find a way to spin (read: lie) news to make the ps3 look good they will.

too bad it’s not having the desired affect as the ps3 continues to sit in last place while the vast majority of ps2 owners ignore it. :)

I think Sony has the right idea here. “stronger focus on first party studios more then ever…”

I for one would rather have a new exclusive game rather than a few missions, or an expansion of a mulit-platform game.
