LittleBigPlanet is not possible on Xbox 360 due to usual reasons

September 10, 2008

LittleBigPlanet is not possible on Xbox 360 due to usual reasons LittleBigPlanet is a PS3 exclusive title that has been receiving an incredible amount of press lately. Some have even said the name LittleBigPlanet has achieved buzzword status in the video game industry. With the incredible amount of hype this title has been receiving from everyone in the video game industry, one has to wonder if such a game is even possible on the Xbox 360?

In a recent interview with Gamesindustry.biz, Media Molecule’s head honcho Alex Evans indicates LittleBigPlanet would not be possible on any other platform expect the PS3. Evans, the proud father of LittleBigPlanet (LBP) seems happy with the platform he has chosen and doesn’t pull any punches when it comes to giving praise to the PS3.

Evans says the 40GB Blu-ray disc is one of the reasons why this title would only be possible on the PS3.

He said:

yes – I believe a Blu-ray single layer is 20GB and a dual layer is 40GB, but we’re filling up the Blu-ray. One of the things on there is we’re having a lot of tutorial content – basically there are two paths through the game, the player’s route and the creator’s route.

So we have a huge library of thousands of different objects, and they’re not just textures – we worry about the bump-mapping and the specular… all the HD, next-gen stuff happens and it’s sitting there on the Blu-ray for you to use without having to worry about it. And that’s really how we’re using the space up.

It appears one of the biggest reasons LBP fills up the entire Blu-ray disc is due to the selection of assets and objects. Literally thousands of objects and textures fill up the disc to deliver the largest variety possible to the end user.

Evan also indicates that another huge benefit of releasing LBP on the PS3 is the hard disk drive(HDD). The Xbox 360 does have a hard drive as well, but Microsoft’s decision not to include a HDD standard in all of the Xbox 360 models would become an issue for LBP were the game ever to come to the console. It can be quite difficult to develop a game centered around user created content when every model of the Xbox 360 does not have a HDD standard.

Microsoft’s executives are probably regretting the decision not to integrate HDD into all of the Xbox 360 models as this has hampered quite a few titles in the past as well. Games such as Project Gotham Racing 4 had to have chunks of the game cut out in order to insure the full game could fit on a single DVD9.

Unreal Tournament III is another example of a game that relies on user created content for the PS3. It is unfortunate the Xbox 360 version still remains gimped with no solution in sight as far as user created content goes.

User created content just might be in the cards for the future of video game consoles and it seems like Sony has the jump on Microsoft with LittleBigPlanet. We can only wait and see how successful this game will be once it launches in October.

God that game looks bad on PS3. The gap between real HD on a PC and upscaled crap on the PS3 is getting bigger and bigger.

  2. henry:

do not trust the above comment I just played on 360 unreal tournament looks bad compare to ps3 superior version.

  3. hamburger:

Don’t worry henry. No one in their right mind would believe a comment posted on this website.

  4. harry sachz:

360 version runs exactly the same as PS3 version, and it has 2 player split screen. Very nice!

  5. Bourne:

And we finally see the use of Blu-ray for those non-believers. It does look brilliant (graphics) and i guess the disks space is the reason for this, allowing high detail. What i will say however is that i expect a large mandatory install? Bioshock needs a 5GB 10 minute install when it arrives on PS3 so i suspect this will be equally, if not bigger?

  6. harry sachz:

FERRO missed a bit out of that interview (not surprisingly)

“The design decisions on the PS3 are huge, and I’m sure you realise that having a hard drive on every unit makes a difference. That’s another thing – if we didn’t have a hard drive on every unit, we’d have to scale back the ambition of what you could save and do. So yes, you could make this game on the 360, but it’d be a different game.”

This extract kinda contradicts the title of ‘LittleBigPlanet is not possible on Xbox 360 due to usual reasons’.

FERRO, if you’re going to post something, at least do a fair job of it. Not only are you tainting your own reputation as someone who is trying to be taken seriously, but you’re also tainting Gamer.blorge by your inaccurate and biased posts.

  7. Wylie:

Harry- It’s obvious that if you dumb it down and take a lot of stuff out of the game that it could be made for the 360. What Mike was saying is that LBP in its current state is not possible on the 360. I’m sure if you took enough stuff out you could play it on a Commadore 64 as well, of course you would then be losing the characters and replacing them with a blimp of pixels among other things. I guess what I am saying is come up with a better post or leave Mike alone.

  8. Matt:

So bluray isn’t the future, it seems.

This isn’t the first time a bluray disk has been filled by a video game.

Sony should be worrying. They spent a LOT of money to make bluray the next thing, and, already, its reached its capacity.

HVD should last longer, anyway, and then PCD will be limited more by the light than the physical space.

I will be interested to see, however, if MS allows “full” versions of games and “no HDD” versions. I imagine it would make some people more than a little mad, but it would allow games like this to come out in a complete form.

  9. jham:

Why people see LittleBigPlanet as a great game ?? From the videos I’ve seen it’s more a minigames package rather than a “4 player platformer”.

I think that this is a try to get some people that usually looks for Nintendo instead of Sony. I also think it’s nice to have some more options rather than shooters, but I don’t know if this could be the best option for me.

Another thing: Casual gamers don’t do “user generated content” as they probably would have a hard time getting to understand the interface as they just want to push some buttons or swing a controller to get 15 minutes fun and that’s it. Yesterday I saw a girl struggling with Katamari !!

  10. Mr Sparkle:

    @jham

Who said it’s for casuals specifically? besides there is over 12 hours of levels already in the game which likely be added to (and will be if u play levels other people have created) the hardcore gamers will love creating levels (if it’s simple enougth some casuals will probably like it as well)

  11. SW:

    @Matt

“This isn’t the first time a bluray disk has been filled by a video game.”

Yeah and we have had multi dvd games for years and continue to do so. What is your point? (e.g. Lost Odyssey is a 4 dual layer dvd’s)

Blu ray was made for movies (and not games! remember the ps3 is there just to push movies and to sell ps3’s), and for that purpose they work FINE.

  12. Arvis:

    SW,

Let’s not forget that they’ve got working prototypes of triple- and quad-layered BDs as well…

    -Arvis

  13. SW:

I didn’t know that Arvis. Will they be compatible with current hardware?

  14. Arvis:

    SW,

That’s the idea, as far as I know. I think BD players were always designed with the idea of expandability (at least in regards to this particular issue) in mind.

    Um, so, short answer: yes.

    -Arvis

  15. harry sachz:

Wylie, no, I am not going to leave FERRO alone until he stops posting such inane biased dribble. He put the title of ‘LittleBigPlanet is not possible on Xbox 360 due to usual reasons’ when the actual developer was even quoted as saying that it is possible. Deliberately leaving that part of the quote out of his post and giving it a title such as that is unprofessional and stupid.

  16. Mr Sparkle:

Oh come on Harry, ur clearly nit-picking. LBP (the ps3 version, in case u havn’t noticed there is only one version) is not possible on the 360

  17. harry sachz:

No Mr Sparkle, it’s not nit picking. His title is misleading, and he missed out crucial parts of that interview which contradict his title.

Anyway, it’s not like he’s a creditable ‘journo’. All he does is get articles off Kotaku or Joystiq, cuts out bits and pieces and then puts in his biased 2 cents worth in. He doesn’t do any research himself.

  18. Quarter:

I am a sony fan boy, but these articles about “LBP not being able to be developed on 360″ are incredibly stupid statements.

He – Alex Evans himself states that
“I don’t want people to say “You could do this game on the 360″ – well, you could do any game on any platform, it’s just that you have to design around it.”

  19. horatio:

First review is in! It is a flop! 5 out of 10!!!!!!! The reviewer said that it looks nice but got bored after 15 minutes, and the level creator was too gammy to do anything decent with!! Put this in the pile with Haze and Lair!

  20. harry sachz:

    Wow…..really?

  21. SW:

But if I say I like it, will you call it niche game like you did too human?

Oh that right, you all stayed out of that thread didn’t you…

  22. harry sachz:

I bought Too Human off Play Asia. Gotta say, i’m really enjoying it so far. Although those spider things that shoot arrows are beginning to piss me off.

  23. pfreak:

Harry, you really are a douche. Your own quote betrays your argument: “so yes, you could make this game on the 360, but it’d be a different game.” Get it? It would be a different game. Not this game. This game cannot be done on xbox.

Having said that I don’t get the excitement over this title, it looks like a graphically impressive bore-fest.

  24. harry sachz:

pfreak, you’re the douche, as you missed my point entirely. The title of the article contradicts what the developer said. You just can’t see beyond your rose coloured glasses.

  25. Arvis:

    Harry,

Uh… you’re still not getting it. The developer said that they could make LittleBigPlanet for the 360, but IT WOULDN’T BE THE SAME AS WHAT THEY’VE MADE ON THE PS3.

So…. the game… AS IT IS RIGHT NOW… would not be possible on the 360. That’s what everyone is trying to say. If you don’t get it now, then I guess you don’t really want to…

    Yikes I’m tired.

    -Arvis

  26. harry sachz:

Yes Arvis, but the article is slanted in a way that they’re saying that it’s not possible at all, hence the title of the article as well as the omission of the part of the interview that says that it is possible to put this game onto 360. If FERRO changed the title and included that part of the interview, the article would be a completely different article, yet one more closer to the truth.

  27. Ivan_PSP:

Almost all PS3 games are not possible on Xbox 360. LittleBigPlanet will cannot de done on Xbox 360 main reason space.

  28. Mr Sparkle:

    @Harry

But then the title will be too long like Dr Strangelove or how I etc. etc.
