Bioshock and Eternal Sonata worth getting on the PS3?

September 13, 2008

Bioshock and Eternal Sonata worth getting on the PS3? As the holiday season approaches us, many publishers will start bringing out the big guns in a span of three  short months. This October, the PS3 will receive a couple of games that Xbox 360 owners had a chance to play last year. With Bioshock and Eternal Sonata being released on the PS3 next month, some gamers may wonder if these two titles are worth getting among a sea of great games.

Not only will these games launch on the PS3 for the first time, they will also include extra exclusive content that were not available on the Xbox 360 version. We would like to take a brief look at these games in order to help those who have yet to make up their holiday spending list.

Eternal Sonata – PS3 Launch: October 21

This game is about the famous composer Frédéric Chopin, who actually died in real life at the age of 39 from tuberculosis. In the game, Chopin is on his death bed and dreams of a mystical fantasy world where music plays a key role in the fictional story.  Basically it is an RPG with  an  Alice in Wonderland type of storyline.

The combat is a mix of real time action, along with a more traditional RPG battle system. The PS3 version will have a few extras that were not present in the  Xbox 360 version. There will be new additional characters, outfits and never before seen cut scenes.

Should PS3 users get it?

Yes

There has been a very little in the way of Japanese RPGs on the PS3, apart from Disgaea 3. Eternal Sonata is a great title to help quell the thirst for some Japanese style RPGs. I would definitely recommend PS3 owners to buy it and give it a shot or at least give it a rent.

Should Xbox 360 owners try it?

No

Yes, there are some exclusive PS3 additions but its hardly enough to warrant those who have already played the original game to play it on the PS3.

Bioshock – PS3 Launch: October 21

Everyone has heard of Bioshock, including many PS3 owners who may have missed out on this great game that graced the PC and Xbox 360 late last year. As 2K games have been working diligently on bringing this fantastic title to the PS3, many PS3 owners may wonder if this game is worth getting almost a year later.

Bioshock is a fantastic underwater adventure game where you delve into the world of Rapture. Rapture is a planned utopian society that has gone seriously wrong. With mutant freaks and crazy doctors out to kill you, this game will leave you on the edge of your seat.

The PS3 version will receive a few extras including a new game mode, but the biggest addition will be a whole new expansion to the game that will be puzzle and ‘challenge’ driven. Some of the puzzles will have to be solved using unique plasmids to perform certain actions. The challenge mode will throw some timed trials into the mix.

Should PS3 users get it?

Yes

PS3 owners who may have missed out Bioshock on the first go around, now have the chance to try one of the best games released last year. To miss this opportunity would be a travesty.

Should Xbox 360 owners try it?

Yes

A new entire section of the game where you can solve the puzzles by only using the plasmids just sounds too spectacular to pass up. I can really see how the developers wanted to take the Portals approach from the Orange Box and use puzzle driven levels. These levels will force users to think outside the box by putting emphasis on the plasmids as the only way to solve the puzzles.

PS3 gamers should definitely give these two titles a try. Xbox 360 owners who also have a PS3 should definitely give Bioshock another go, especially if you enjoyed Bioshock on the Xbox 360. The additional expansion to Bioshock for the PS3 will definitely give you an excuse to visit Rapture one more time.

  1. Troy:

I have an Xbox360 – and missed playing Bioshock the first time. This was only because I was playing other great games at the time. I have been hanging to get a PS3 but been waiting for a suitable title (one I am interested in). If the improved Bioshock resembles only have of portal in the puzzle solving stakes then this could be good reason for me to finally pick up a system.

  2. CAD:

As much as I would have perferred this game to stay exclusive to the 360, PS3 owners are probably getting the best game to grace the system this year. This game is amazing and definately a game to purchase. I wish there was multi-player and online. It was game of the year for 2007. Enjoy!!

  3. DAVE:

    CAD why?

  4. wavy gravy:

If you have already played Bioshock on the 360 or PC or you have played Eternal Sonata on the 360 then I wouldn’t bother unless you are a hardcore fan.

If you haven’t played either of them you should definitely get them on the PS3 because they are the definitive versions of the games.

    @ CAD

Bioshock wasnt a 360 exclsuive. It sold well over 1 million copies on the PC.

Sorry about that but I just tend to take games made for 360 and “Game for Windows” as 1 in the same because it’s still Microsoft at the end of the day. I look at it like their brothers. If it wasn’t a Games for Windows brand then I can see your point. 360 and Games for Windows even share LIVE.

  7. Matt:

@ CAD, BIOSHOCK SUCKED BALLS……it will be the worst game on ps3……it had shitty graphics, the HACK thing always fucked you over, just to make the game seem longer they added more doorways and locked some of them so you can waste hours running around in the game just to get passed a 5 minute level, the first person view looked bad, the story line was weird and made no sense…….the best part of the game was when you cured the little girls……”no, no, NO, no”….LMAO, it sounds like you rape them………that game got so boring……you may like it, but i sure didnt

    @ CAD

The fact that Bioshock is made to run on the Windows operating system has nothing whatsoever to do with it. The PC’s aren’t made by Microsoft and they aren’t called Xbox 360s. If you dont have to buy a 360 to play a certain game then that game is not a 360 exclusive and that applies for all consoles although there never seems to be any confusion like this with other consoles because the games they describe as exclusives usually are.

  9. kev:

wavy – you need to keep up. it’s already been established pc and console gaming a separate. who cares if it’s on pc? console gamers are console gamers. bioshock was on no other console at the time of release. it’s funny you ignore the colossal pc requirements that 99% of pc on the market don’t have, which are needed to run this game on pc. so essentially you DO have to have a console to play it properly. stop reaching.

i don’t think fps ever really will fair as well on the ps3 as the 360 due to the ps3’s poor controller design.

bioshock, with the 10 minute, 5gb, mandatory install, isn’t enought to buy the ps3 for….

  10. Renai Kakume:

Kev just to let you know the playstation 3’s controller is nothing different from the 360’s I played both they feel exactly the same if you really think fps are better on the 360 then you havent played Resistance and never heard of a game called Killzone 2 Playstation 3 was made to rule the world and it shall ^_^ with the Wii being its bioche selling more than both of them though =/

Lets face it its real good time to be a gamer…especially a ps3 gamer! so many games coming one after the other LBP SOCOM BIOSHOCK Resistance 2, and then ending into next year!!!! infamous killzone 2 Heavey Rain and these are just exclusives besides bioshock!!! multiplatforms

Don’t worry i’ll own all three i actually do but my 360 has the RRoD so i use my buddies 360 to play Renai Kakume is my gamer tag as well as Renai_Kakume is my PSN ID add me ^_^ and umm…join psnfriends.com if you like playstation 3 or anything Sony….even if you like 360 too there’s a place for you! Have fun guys and gals

“it’s funny you ignore the colossal pc requirements that 99% of pc on the market don’t have,”

That depends on which requirements you’re talking about. The game is playable with the min. requirements which enough people meet to make it sell over a million copies.

Taken from Steams hardware survey :

There are 865,00 users meeting or exceeding the minimum CPU spec (which is a p4 @ 2.4ghz single core), %36 were dual core and up, 1.2 million with 1GB or more of RAM, and about 900,000 that met or exceeded the gfx card requirements.

You don’t need most of the world to have decent computers, just the gamers…

Still, if you have it on 360, why on earth would you buy it again for an extra hour or so on content?

  12. cr:

umh.. bioshock on ps3, more content with downgraded graphics.. ill pass.. graphics are important to me..

  13. Matt:

@ cr, 360 graphics are worse buddy…..just a little heads up that you should notice

  14. Larry:

Hey Wavy – Cad was stating that if it says Games For Windows on it – which Bioshock does – Microsoft’s Gaming Division still makes money off it just like the 360 version. So is you’re one of the MS haters who buys a pc version of a game thinking you-re dissing MS, you’re not.

  15. cr:

    @matt
umh.. i have both.. ps3 games looks blurry.. and always have framerate drops.. i think you need to make more comparisions my friend.. or you need to buy a 360.. open your eyes, take off that sony glasses..

  16. Mr Sparkle:

Can’t wait for the top difficulty setting, only played Boshock on my mates PC briefly and was very impressed so I’m going on the hardest difficulty straight away to get full and best Bioshock experience possible.

  17. Alienange:

    I’ll get Bioshock when it’s a $30 greatest hit.

I love RPGs, but Eternal Sonata sounds boring as heck. Chopin? Really? Who’s played it? What’s good about it?

  18. Wolf26pack:

Personally since I don’t have a Xbox 360 and would probably only end up getting maybe 7-10 games for it and I already have a PS3 I will be extremely happy to pick up both Eternal Sonata & Bioshock. It’s about the fun of playing the games and I know both those games will be fun.

  19. Ivan_PSP:

    cr:
Shut the hell up u obviously a huge fanboy.

  20. Zubs:

XBox 360 already outdated. Watch now as 90% of developers are starting to concentrate on PS3,which they shud have from the beginning.
