Can the Xbox 360 really beat the PS3 & Wii in the console war?
The Wii, PS3 and Xbox 360 are currently engaged in one of the fiercest and bloodiest console wars ever, with a winner yet to be declared. With all three home consoles still in the running, how can you expect to pick a victor?
This generation of consoles is like no past generation in one important way: it’s almost impossible to pick a winner. Sure, the Wii is selling like hotcakes and currently has the lead, but both the Xbox 360 and PS3 are still selling in fair numbers month on month around the world. So how on earth do you choose which console will prove victorious at this (relatively) early stage of proceedings?
Don Reisinger writes The Digital Home, a column on CNet which looks at the state of technology in and around the house. He thinks he can predict the future, and did so in an article titled ‘The Xbox 360 should win this console war’. I note he used “should” rather than “will”, which is a classic case of hedging your best in case you’re wrong.
In the article, Reisinger states the case for the Xbox 360 proving to be the ultimate victor in the current gen console war. This is despite the Wii currently caning the opposition in every single (sales) department, and the Xbox 360 consistently battling for last place with the PS3 every month in the US. Microsoft’s console is also in a definite last place in Japan, despite those recent sales surges, and being roundly beaten by the PS3 in Europe.
In spite of all this, Reisinger thinks the Xbox 360 will end this generation as the sales leader. So, is he a deeply deluded Microsoft fanboy, or could he actually be correct?
The recent price cuts are what prompted the timing of Reisinger’s article, as he thinks these will be monumentally important in determining the outcome of this generation’s console placings. He thinks that the new lower price of the Xbox 360 Arcade pack will enable Wii owners to upgrade to the Xbox 360 as they start wanting more features, better graphics, better games, and online play.
That’s not to say that the Wii isn’t a true competitor to the Xbox 360 and PS3. In fact, Reisinger agrees with me that the Wii is a true next-gen console thanks to its innovative control system. But, there is a question mark hanging over the Wii’s long-term future, and it’s a question mark that Reisinger has picked up on and used to batter the Wii about the head with.
What about the PS3 I hear you cry. Reisinger isn’t a fan. He thinks the cost is prohibitively expensive, the Blu-ray player is of limited value, and it has nothing going for it, over what the Xbox 360 can offer, to make the extra $100 worthy.
Reisinger concludes by suggesting the Wii will win for the next one to two years, but it’s time will then be over. And which console will be there with an attractive price point and a huge library of games to take its place? Why, the Xbox 360 of course.
It’s an interesting viewpoint to hold on the current state of the games console market. But, in the same way that the industry analysts such as Michael Pachter and Jesse Divnich have no divine powers when it comes to predicting the future, nor does Reisinger. He does at least have a 1 in 3 chance of being right I suppose.

If the Wii hasn’t won it yet then i really dont know how you measure a victory. Its outselling both PS3 and 360 combined and as much as no-one (including me) hates to admit, its whooping them in terms of sales. The Wii cannot compare when it comes to anything but sales though, games graphics online are all lacking. I think the 360 has no chance of winning the war, the battle isn’t for first anymore its for second. Although the 360 currenttly occupies 2nd, the PS3 is coming up fast, the 360 shouldn’t get too comfortable.
September 14th, 2008
Bourne, i agree with you…..you also put it in a nice way….
September 14th, 2008
The xbox 360 should do well and could win the console battle. The Wii would probably loose sale and trail behind all of them. I see the PS3 as a current gen console and a next gen console. PS3 to me is like a revelution in gameing. The wii is too. I think The PS3 should start to take a lead near the peak of this console battle. PS3 just has so much potential that i dont think they will need a PS4 untill 2016. SONY did say it was going to have a 10 year lifespan. Theres so much potential in the PS3. Most developers have only unlocked a small percentage. MGS4 is only the beginning of what the PS3 can do. ITs only getting started. WHile now it wont get as much sales as the Wii or PS2, it should have the most sales by the end of the battle. PS3 should probably be most respected game console in history. It may have lost the battle but it will in the WAR.

Wii will win, anyone who thinks otherwise is smoking crack.
360 will come in second, PS3 will come in last. I worked out that if the PS3 outsells the 360 by 25,000 per month, it’s going to take 16.6 years for it to catch up. However if we have more months like last month and this month where 360 won/will win, then PS3 will never catch up.
September 14th, 2008
25,000 per month? According to VGChartz, the PS3 is outselling the Xbox by about 40,000 per week.
September 14th, 2008
@wade
you right, but dont forget to mention thats world wide sales. the ps3 will have no prob beating the 360 world wide.
@harry
the npd sales only show the usa sales, and yes it will probably be hard for the ps3 to surpass the 360 in the US
September 14th, 2008
@wade
also… lets keep the coments about sales on the USA only… cuz if we were to talk about world wide sales, the ps3 ownz that so bad that this site would be no fun no more
September 14th, 2008
The Wii is winning in the console sales game followed by 360 but the Wii is third in the game sales department. 360 is #1 in game sales followed by PS3. So what is more important and what qualifies as a win? It would seem to me that software is the main focus here because that is the reason we buy consoles.
September 14th, 2008
VGChartz aren’t very accurate. I was talking about the video gaming homeland, the USA.
Even if we’re talking worldwide, and as much as I hate the website, i’ll use it’s numbers, 360 is 5.27 million ahead. Using this week’s hardware sales, PS3 outsold 360 by 34,000 worldwide. So monthly that would be 136,000 per month. 5.27 million divided by 136,000 is 38.75 months, let’s round it up to 39 months. It is September 2008 right now, so going by these numbers, the Ps3 won’t catch up to the 360 until January 2012! By that time i’ll probably be married with kids! And also by that time, this console war will be over and both companies will have either released or nearly released their next console.
Regardless, any way you put it, 360 won this generation’s war with PS3. It took a MASSIVE share out of Sony’s last generation users. So not only did Sony not maintain their current customers, they lost a huge % of them to Microsoft.
Oh my….
September 14th, 2008
@ harry sachz
The USA is a very large market share of gaming, but it doesn’t decide the console war, especially not in a globally connected world we live in. 2012 is definitely in Sony’s 10 year plan, and even when Microsoft releases its new console in a year or two, most likely, its much more money people have to spend just to catch up to the PS3. The PS3 is built for longevity, just like the PS1 and PS2, 2 years in doesn’t decide how the console is going to work for them. In fact, Sony has already turned a profit on the PS3, and not to mention the gazillions they are STILL making off the PS2 and the PSP. Victory cannot be determined until longer down the line, at least 4-5 years.
September 14th, 2008
Since when have they been turning a profit with the PS3? Last I heard, they were in a 3.3 billion dollar hole, losing money per console sold and not having as big of an attach rate as the 360.
September 14th, 2008
why Dave PARRACK!!
why??
Why post obvious flame baits… WHY??
Does it matter if one console wins??
…. meh…
September 14th, 2008
In one or two years Nintendo can send out the Wii2 with improved graphics and CPU power, easily matching or even surpassing Xbox360 and PS3. Since it was so cheap to begin with, many won’t have a problem shelling another 200-250 dollars for a new system. And then what do the PS3 and 360 have got going for them? Nil.
Wii wins, hands down.
September 14th, 2008
The question remains as to whether the casual market will be pissed or not at the prospect of upgrading their hardware every X years.
Most of the PS2 user base either hasn’t switched over (the damn thing is still kicking!) or just went to Wii. Will they want a ‘Wii 2′ in two years? or will they be happy to keep playing Wii sports etc?
Now if Nintendo adds GOOD VR or something cooler than waggle controls, I’m %10000 right in line to buy one
September 14th, 2008
By default the Wii wins the race right now, in term of sells. However, that’s just “right now”, no one can know the future, or what will happen, right now people can only predict. And anyone who take prediction as facts are merely just speculating.
Or they are simply fanboys.
September 15th, 2008
@dk
Umm, what? Wii is an overclocked gamecube? From 350mhz to 738mhz. Still slow in anybodys language nowdays. I dont see Nintendo investing heavily in hardware performance anyway.
This generation, Wii has won, game over. But the next one, Wii2, 720 and ps3, the ps3 would have a substantial lead. Also dont i see that those casual gamers that bought the wii would go out and buy the Wii2. So as far as i can see, Wii is going to stay till atleast 2013. The xbox would need some serious R+D to compete with the ps3. Since IBM has created an anti-microsoft stance, they are going to find it difficult to produce a powerful console that can match the ps3. Though the graphics side of it can be easily obtained, the CPU isnt quite so.
So any profit 360 made would be used to develop the next console.
In the end, i believe it will be a battle between the ps3 and the wii. But in the US, its hard to say.
September 15th, 2008
@ Togenshi
IBM owns the core technology behind Xenon… aka, Microsoft’s tricore G5 (I’m over simplifying). Like every other corporation, it’s about money. I, by no means, am an M$ console fan but I have to respectfully disagree with you about IBM being “against” microsoft. Microsoft would have easily gone with AMD, Freescale, or Intel (especially since Intel and M$ have a long history of software integration together) and IBM could have said, “No, you stole DOS from us… we’re not going to do business with you.” Now the real irony is, for every Xbox 360 sold.. Apple gets some money… Why? VMX also known as Velocity Engine, and Altivec, Apple’s little software contribution to the PowerPC RISC architecture architecture.
@ Bourne
Nicely said. I couldn’t agree more.
@ CAD
You raised a critical point… it’s the software. Developers are realizing more profit with the 360 and PS3 than on the Wii. The numbers and shareholder financials don’t lie. The software battleground is between the 360 and PS3… EA, the biggest game developer in the US is seeing substantially greater profits from PS3 game sales than 360. This is a trend M$ hasn’t ignored and is attempting to address with the price cuts on their hardware.
You are right about PS3 being a money loser for Sony. They haven’t made up the costs associated with the PS3 but their Game Division HAS been turning a profit for the last two quarters. SCEA has its fingers in many industries and media but their game division has been turning a profit, that profit being driven by software/royalties for games/periferals (sp?) being sold and played on their system. Every game EA sells to PS3 owners Sony gets money… So, EA claims they made a couple hundred million dollars selling games to PS3 gamers, which my or may not include decrements for royalties they must pay Sony to release games on their system… etc.
From what I can tell, this strictly being my opinion, the gaming industry is in an interesting place: Hardware (Wii is winning) 3rd party Software (360 is in first place with PS3 catching up fast).
September 15th, 2008
Sorry for the multiple posts but I just wanted to clarify my EA comment… I’m referring revenue not profit. When adjusted for other costs, according to EA Q3 2008 fiscal teleconference, they grossed about 700 million, of which PS3 grossed more than 360.
I’m still looking for the data regarding this ytd breakdown… i could be wrong. If I’m wrong, sorry for the confusion/mistake.
September 15th, 2008
Why is it, that all that Yanks want to do, is compare everything to themselves….. FFS There is a world outside the US you know.
Back on track. Wii has won (even though I don’t consider it to be in the “current generation” bracket) Both 360 and PS3 are selling well…so who cares ??
September 15th, 2008
The ps3 will win. It has the most power and potential. The author of the article didn’t take into account the fact that x-box games are reaching the limit on their disk. Ps3 blueray disks have 5-7 times the space. Also just a note when the 360 came out they slammed it down your throat and said” we arnt making you any more games, so buy a new system”. Ps3 wasn’t forced, you could still play you ps2 because they are still making games for it.

“harry sachz:
September 14th, 2008
VGChartz aren’t very accurate. I was talking about the video gaming homeland, the USA”
Gaming Homeland????? Such arrogance from the Yanks. The real gaming homeland is where the tech came from …. Japan. Micorsoft have released a faulty console which, if it were a car for example, would have been the subject of a mass recall!! Did you know that 60 out of evry 100 360’s produced from the initial production run wouldn’t work? That MS cynically released one of the biggest technical faults this decade knowing full well their machine was unrealiable? Why do you think that the initial warranty offered was only 3 months???? Because MS never expected their machines to last that. MS is an American company that produces shoddy goods (wheres Japanese goods are at least reliable and well made).
I own a Wii, PS3, DS and PSP. Recently thought about getting the 360 to play Gears of War and Halo but, after my mates machine died and reading the history of the console, I decided not to. Instead I have upgraded my PC so it now runs Gears of War, Crysis etc….
Much better and certainly worth the money!
September 15th, 2008
Actually hasn’t the DS won ? Oh wait, we don’t include that gaming machine because it’s a hand held. Well I don’t include the Wii in the current console war because real gamers who might own a Wii, also own or will eventually own, one of the other two consoles. Why? Because the Wii is fun, but does not fill our next gen gaming desires. Anybody here own ONLY the Wii?
… meh … please. No way. The sales of the biggest game ever, Madden, shows everyone where the gamers are. The gamers run this industry. They decide who wins and who loses. Grandma who picked up a Wii doesn’t decide the winner.
September 15th, 2008
Why is it that last gen Sony fanboys rarely spoke of hardware specs and “potential”, yet now thats all I ever hear you talk about? Whats even funnier is yet again you have bought into the hype about the so called power of the Ps3, believing it will compete on even ground with consoles coming out around 2012, when in actuality it is at best on par with the 360 as it stands.
September 15th, 2008
@jeffy
You truly talk out of your ass, Microsoft had to drop the Xbox because they did not own the graphics chipset could never cost reduce the damned thing. Also why is it you all forget that it was their first entry into the console market, AND they are a software company?
September 15th, 2008
Maylon, the 360 is a “damned thing” too.

What are you walking about? PS3 graphics is 3 generations behind PC. The hardcore gamers have PCs and are laughing at your my NES is better than your Sega arguments.
September 15th, 2008
@me
Did you even read my post before you went on your PC R BETTERZ!! rant? I have a very capable gaming rig myself, so your preaching to the choir on that one, I was speaking only of consoles.
September 15th, 2008
@ me: There are very few desirible games on a PC. Crysis, sure, but apart from that, as much as i dislike it, you may as well buy a 360 because they share a lot of games believe it or not. You pay like £3000 for a decent gaming PC and spend your time on 360 ports which look identical to the 360 version. Then console gamers like me laugh at you as i paid £350 for my console with a large and desirable games catalogue AND i wont get a virus when your windows gets hacked by 35 year old nerds. Back to the graphics part, Crysis is the only PC game which truly utilises the graphics card of a decent gaming pc rig. Apart from that its all hype.
September 15th, 2008
I would just like to see something here…. A lot of analysts and fanboys(since they are the biggest critics) seem to think that the winner of the “console war” is the one with the biggest library. Now honestly, who is going to go buy a game that’s 2 years old or more in the future when there are so many good games coming out?
I just don’t see the “biggest library” aspect of owning a console being a factor in selling the most. You could say though, that if a console releases twice as many games in the same span as the other, then that could be a factor giving that console more variety.
They should make an article on that or even a survey to see what other people think. Mind you this is only to put that “biggest library” theory to rest.
Going by VGCharts, which doesn’t say much, Wii has the most games @ 626, X360 @ 473 and PS3 @ 333. This might include doubles as in special editions and also announced unreleased games but they all have them anyway. X360 and PS3 seem to put out 150+ games each per year while the Wii puts out 300+ per year. I also wouldn’t put the Wii in the same category but they do take customers away from the other two.
What are your thoughts?
September 15th, 2008
Look at the facts: The Wii outsells the other consoles both in software and hardware sales.
The problem with the Wii software sales are the 3rd-Party sales, but these was bad because most 3rd-party made crap games. Look at the two latest Sports Games: Madden 09 was a crappy Wii-Port, and the sales are down. The Wii Version of Tiger Woods 09 is superior to the others and the sales are highest for this version.
Now there are many quality Wii games in production. 2009 will be more quality Wii-Games from 3rd-Party than 2007+2008 combined. But the next month of 2008 will already show quality games (de Blob, Quantum of solace, Sam&Max, Mushroom Men, Callf o Duty 5, etc.).
So I think the Wii software sales will rise in the next month.
September 15th, 2008
I think many Core-Gamer will buy a Wii this year. Because by the end of 2008 there are so many exclusive core-games out or planned for 2009 that the purchase of a Wii is worthwhile.
September 15th, 2008
The wii is only a “party console” though. I have the ps3, wii, and 360. I will only play the wii with others. The 360 is the best of them all, and I hope it can win the race, but I think it will be wii, 360, ps3
September 15th, 2008
Bourne… A 3 grand gaming rig? WTF are you smoking? Especially when you’re talking in pounds sterling…
Hacked by a 35 year old? Again, what on earth?
Anywhoos, I don’t give a fuck who ‘wins’.
I have my PC for the best FPS, RTS, space sims, flight sims etc etc.
And I have my console for racers, 3rd person action games (altho there are some great ones of PC too) etc. Within that, I own my 360 for certain exclusives, and my PS3 and Wii for other exclusives. Most of the x-platform games are slightly dodgy or ‘middle of the road’ (e.g. burnout) anyway.
September 15th, 2008
@Guesswhoo – I never quite used the wii to party, altho it was good to get the missus into gaming a little
(altho she never really got into ‘true’ push button games and just likes waggle control games).
But there are some nice exclusive games such as metroid prime, mario galaxy and even x-platform such as Resi 4 (which is way better with the wiimote).
But after I burned thru those, kinda drawing a blank tbh. I have (some) faith that the Big N will knock out a new zelda that is awesome or something else…

As Wii sales are up and up, more 3rd parties look to make SERIOUS games for it.
The 360 looks pretty dead. It certainly has an end-of-life attach rate, much higher than it should be at this point if people were buying consoles. MS loyalists will try to explain it away, but a Wii game that sells to half the Wii owners is better than a 360 game that sells to ALL the 360 owners.
Where will 3rd parties go?

What are people on about? Harry how has the 360 already won this console war? (both it and the ps3 are gettin soundly beaten by the Wii) sounds like u know the ps3(only been out 1 year and 6 months in Europe) is catching up fast and hav decided the console war is already over so u don’t have to deal with the fact that the ps3 will overtake ur precious 360 in worldwide sales.

Wii Will win the console War due to sales
The PS3 is the Best console and that guy is a retard for thinking the “price is to high” It has so much going for it, the guy doesn’t even know what he is talking about. The PS3 just needs a better Online system. Steal the Live Features, make it a requirement for developers to include trophies, Total In game XMB support, In game Video recording support, Clan support, Official Playstation Tournaments. It needs more PS2 and PS1 titles out and a little extra PSN games for The PS3 store. Its missing key software features but thats fixable. PS3 has already won the war in my opinion Its the best console out there great exclusives and a great all round system.
The 360 has a good chance of coming in 2nd in terms of sales, but is the 2nd best console but has a good strong library of games even though there is a handful of shit titles. The 360 has great software features e.g Live.
Reisinger you really need a slap.
So yeah sales winners(and this is what the company cares about as well as making customers happy enough to buy there next console) will be:
1.Wii
2.PS3/360
The best all round console
1.PS3
2.Wii
3.Xbox 360 and Im in no way an anti xbox person people are stupid who are fanboys Im a Gamer Man I love games, Id love to get a 360 for exclusives. But my choice for multi platform Will be Playstation and my choice for console is Playstation. The

Except I can play UT3 at true 1080p and all you get on your PS3 is 580p upscaled crap.
Console games just look bad because their trying to run todays games with yesterdays graphics.
September 15th, 2008
The PLAYSTATION 3 will hopefully win i know for sure Xbox 360 won’t win shit that article was pure garbage from a non gamer so call gaming journalist pathetic. Again Xbox 360 is a fucking joke you can’t even finish a game with out the console dying on you.
September 16th, 2008
My heart says 360 will win (I am a halo fanatic).. but my head say’s PS3 will outshine the 360 (MGS4 really shines through), PS3 is built like a tank, amazing graphics capability and awesome features (bluray).
However, common sense tells me to bet my money on Wii.. the runaway success in this generation (xbox and ps3 fanboys just deal with it…. we’ve been beaten by this midget of a console)
September 16th, 2008
@ me
Only UT3? i don’t call that an overwhelming reason to get a gaming PC. I don’t play that on my console let alone on a gaming rig. I want a dedicated gaming rig, not with windows publisher, word, excel etc. I don’t care about doing that kind of crap on a machine i bought to play games on. I cant stand it when you start up a PC for the first time, think its really fast only to find a month later its come to a complete slowdown just because you uploaded a few hundred itunes tracks and a few Microsoft word documents. If i bought a Gaming rig and it slowed down i’d be physically sick.
I also hate the fact that if you want to play with a gaming controller you have to buy it seperatly, otherwise use a mouse and a keyboard to play friggin computer games….wtf?!!
September 16th, 2008
Cost me $5 for a USB convertor that allows me to plug in my PS2 pad
Best purchase ever (except for my ps2!).
As for mouse and keyboard controls, they work best for the most popular PC genres.
I’d much rather play an FPS with over 40 keys available AND precision mouse control over ‘analogue’ sticks. Same goes with RTS’s, MMO’s, some RPGs, & various sim type games.
I’m not going to use my keyboard to play star wars the force unleashed (if its getting a pc release) or a game like DMC or God of War (just examples).
September 16th, 2008
lol keyboard are so old school. I expect to play keyboard games on the internet such as chaos faction using W,A,S,D not for a game i purchased. Popular PC genre = RPG and/or strategy.
September 16th, 2008
I don’t see what is so old skool.
Unless when you play your 360 or ps3 you are moving your fingers into the 4th dimension or something. Otherwise, aren’t you doing the same thing I am just with a more portable device?
“Popular PC genre = RPG and/or strategy.” Yes, and FPS games and sims. Correct!
September 16th, 2008
“Only UT3? i don’t call that an overwhelming reason to get a gaming PC”
No, PCs can run other games at high resolution too
The problem with consoles is that once the programmers figure out how to get the most out of them the technology is so old that it doesn’t really matter anymore.
This whole argument about which console is more powerful is ridiculous. If you want good graphics get a PC, if you want a particular game that isn’t on PC and are willing to put up with SD rendering up scaled to HD get a PS3, XBOX or Wii.
September 17th, 2008
SW :
FPS on PC’S are owned by consoles. I never really cared for sims, flight sim was crap ( i’m a trainee pilot ) and was painfully slow.
Me :
The problem with PC’S are that the technology gets old as soon as you buy it. Its a hole to throw money into. At least Game consoles have a large lifespan, whereas if you dont update your graphics, processor for a PC every week then your always behind.
September 17th, 2008
You know, people can talk up PC gaming all they want, but the fact remains that they paid AT LEAST twice as much as console gamers just to have LESS GAMES to play.

360 is at least nuking PS3 out of the ocean.
Doubling up in all three markets (US, Europe, and Japan even) widening the already large gap.
Have fun Sony fanboys.
