Week in Gaming: PS3 Eight Days looks promising and DS GTA: Chinatown Wars revealed

September 20, 2008

Chinatown Wars revealed Another week in gaming has gone by, and with it came an assortment of interesting tidbits of information. Some intriguing information regarding Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars on the DS was revealed this week by Nintendo Power. There was also a never before seen video of the recently canceled Eight Days.

Eight Days

Eight Days is a third person shooter that was in development by Sony London Studios. However, Sony recently announced that this title was canceled per Shuhei Yoshida’s discretion. For those who don’t know Yoshida, he is Phil Harrison’s replacement as the new head of World Wide Studios. In an effort to focus on online and social gaming, a decision was made to axe Eight Days and Getaway 3.

There has been some criticism as to the reasons behind canceling Getaway 3, since the previous game went on to sell over 4 million units. However, since Eight Days was an unknown title, many people shrugged off the announcement of its demise.

Recently, a tech demo of the run and cover mechanics in Eight Days was leaked onto the Internet. Just looking at the tech demo, the gameplay looks impressively solid. The graphics of the character looks extremely good as well, almost ‘Uncharted’ like.

It is unfortunate such a promising game was canceled due to what some have criticized as a questionable business decision. I suppose this is all part of Sony’s strategy to take on the Wii and Xbox 360 from all sides. Let us hope this game wasn’t permanently canceled, but shelved for a future date.

Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars

Since the announcement of Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars on the Nintendo DS, there has been very little information regarding this title. However, it seems all of that has changed with the recent issue of Nintendo Power. The latest issue of the magazine not only outline details about the game, but first ever screenshots were included as well.

GTA: Chinatown Wars will be cel-shaded and have an isometric view like Diablo. The game will also have a sandbox environment, with free range run and gun experience.  Chinatown Wars will also take full advantage of the DS touch screen. All of the mini games and menu UI will utilize the touch screen in one form or another.

I am sure readers will agree with me when I say this game looks like it will give me another great reason to spend some quality time with my DS. Make sure to keep a sharp eye out for this title sometime during Q1 2009.

    GTA: Chinatown wars lokks so damn dated and ugly not worth buying or even renting is gonna be crap DS sucks.

  2. me:

    The PS3 looks dated compared to the PC (because it is) it doesn’t mean it doesn’t have games worth playing.

  3. harry sachz:

    Eight Days LOOKED promising, not looks promising.

  4. hamburger:

    @me

    The Ps3 may look dated against the PC, but the difference is not as much as the MSX versus The HP BlackBird002.
    However, I have to say that this Gta is uglier than that and is certainly not worth it.

  5. Ivan_PSP:

    Well most PC are still now as powerful as a PS3 but they are capable if you waste money upgrading everything from.

    Ram
    Motherboard
    Graphic Card
    Sound Card
    Windows
    Hard Disk Drive

    If you love gaming and you’re rich buy a monster PC. If love gaming a lot you must get the PLAYSTATION 3 instantly, i’m getting a new 60GB from Amazon soon my second master piece can’t wait. If play some games you can also buy the Xbox 360 which might last a couple months before dying and is not as good or as powerful as the PS3, but it plays games also.

    Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars will suck the only real reason why Take two Interactive wants a GTA for the crappy DS (Dual Screen). Is because it might sell well so they want to milk the GTA franchise anywhere except the Wii LMFAO. The Getaway 3 & Eight Days were both just stop temporally not really cancel just a enormous delay that’s.

    @Harry,

    no, it still looks promising.. “looked” implies it doesn’t look impressive now.

  7. mark:

    @Ivan_PSP,

    actually your wrong in that there is no personal PC that is as powerful as the PS3. You have to remember the PS3 can perform 2.0 teraFLOPs (trillion operations per sec. ) which is considered super computing speed:

    “Measuring supercomputer speed

    The speed of a supercomputer is generally measured in “FLOPS” (FLoating Point Operations Per Second), commonly used with an SI prefix such as tera-, combined into the shorthand “TFLOPS” (1012 FLOPS, pronounced teraflops), or peta-, combined into the shorthand “PFLOPS” (1015 FLOPS, pronounced petaflops.) “

  8. harry sachz:

    No Mark, it LOOKED promising because it’s on an indefinite hiatus and more than likely won’t see the light of day.

  9. me:

    Mark you’re wrong but it doesn’t matter anyway. The PS3 isn’t more powerful than the PC (or XBOX 360) at PLAYING GAMES!!!

    The thing that’s killing the PS3 is that it has a seventh generation GeForce graphics chip with 256 MB of RAM. These chips are so old now that the only place you can find them for the PC is in the $50 bargain bin.

  10. Ivan_PSP:

    PLAYSTATION 3 games that show how extraordinary advanced PS3 really is at everything it does. This game still don’t use half of the PS3 power and they can only be done on PS3.

    Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots cannot fit on a DVD9

    Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction cannot fit on a DVD9

    Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune cannot fit on a DVD9

    Gran Turismo 5: Prolouge cannot fit on a DVD9

    Resistance: Fall of Man cannot fit on a DVD9

    MotorStorm cannot fit on a DVD9

    Ratchet & Clank is like watching a real time 3D Pixar film. Metal Gear Solid 4 has higher quality than any movie well maybe not The Day After Tomorrow LoL. PS3 is the most affordable and most powerful gaming/Linux PC available now.

  11. me:

    Maybe the next generation will deliver true 1080p HD graphics and not just upscaled crap. It’d be willing to bite the bullet and get a PS4 if it could really render games at the max resolution of my TV, after all they are very cheap compared to PCs.

    Ivan, yeah? So?

  14. Ivan_PSP:

    Just making a point that’s all…

  15. kristo:

    Ivan;

    you say PS3 games “cannot fit on a DVD9″, but actually the size of the disc files is indicative only of the number and length of the pre-rendered video cutscenes, in most cases. it doesn’t really relate to the quality of the whole in-game experience — the fact that there are so many games with cutting edge graphics that are no better on PS3 than on the X360 or Windows is due to the distributors not spending enough on exclusive game development. Microsoft is outdoing Sony in the most important area here, by cutting corners on their (ageing) hardware and pumping money into new software. this is not a new situation, but every generation of hardware will see Microsoft’s edge over Sony grow exponentially, unless they change their approach or come out with some truely innovative features, as Nintendo did with the Wii. the fact is, the PS3 hardware performance potential exceeds an _average_ PC with Vista by an order of magnitude, but none of the current games take full advantage of it. graphics chips and video memory may be a weak point, but are only a small part of the equation in gaming. Sony is completely reliant on cross-platform (read:poor-to-average quality) game development for their non-Japanese market, which ironically make up their core sales.
    for the time being, the usable strengths of the PS3 lie not in games, but as a multimedia platform, which is one area Sony already has a huge market share of, and exceed all of Microsoft’s aspirations for the last decade — Sony needs to open up and capitalise on that, or end up in Sega Dream(land).

    kristo:
    You ignorant stupid fucking fool i never none of that bullshit but most PLAYSTATION®3 games can’t be done the crap called DVD9. No game publish by SCEA can done on on Xbox 360 with the exception of Warhawk and Gran Turismo PSN games. So don’t get this shit started because i will drowned you. Microsoft is a failure in the eye of competitive business. Microsoft doesn’t have shit on Sony get that straight fanboy. Go kiss your Xbox 360 if in that much denial…

  17. phranctoast:

    Eight days and the Getaway 3 were canceled so that they could concentrate on eyePet.

    That may turn out to be a great idea, as I can see many people going nuts for it. It screams innovation.

    I’d however prefer Eightdays and Getaway 3 myself….

  18. Norm:

    LOL @ Ivan

  19. Ivan_PSP:

    lmfao @ You

  20. harry sachz:

    And your point was what?

  21. lvan_PSP:

    The cocks I eat, cannot fit on a DvD9, which is why I got PS3 for all my gay porn I have on blu ray, which I incessantly and rabidly masturbate over until my penis is nothing but a small bloody red stump.

  22. Ivan_PSP:

    LoL poser Xbox 60 still sucks.

  23. Ivan_PSP:

    Every Xbox fan wants to switch to the real next gen system PS3 they just too much on denial to admitted. Xbox 360 is lagging in exclusives, hardware, support, quality, fan, innovation and now even online. PS3 has succeeded all of that with having to waste 7 billion like the trashy useless good for nothing Xbox brand which Sony will soon kill…
