Will Microsoft ‘Phoenix’ rise from Xbox ashes to topple PS4, Wii 2?
This generation of consoles has barely got going, with the price war not really having even begun, and no sign of a winner yet being called (although the Wii is clearly the frontrunner). But, the next generation of consoles could be on their way sooner than we all think. The only question remains: who will actually be involved?
Actually I lied, the other question is when will the next-gen consoles actually arrive on the scene. We’ve spoken about this before, with 2010 being the earliest date mentioned in terms of when a new console could emerge from one of the big three, More likely given the state of the industry (healthy console sales but all three platforms still viable) is 2011 or 2012.
Nintendo is guaranteed to be in there. The Wii and DS have made the company so much money that it is likely to want to throw money at a new development in an effort to repeat the phenomenal success of this generation’s offerings.
Whether the Wii 2 is just a souped up version of the Wii or another evolution in game controls remains to be seen. However Nintendo decide to play it, I think the successor to the Wii will be the first out of the door.
Sony too is very likely to be involved. Sure, the Playstation 3 has cost the company a shed load of money to come to market, and it’ll take years (if ever) for the PS3 to earn back the money that Sony has invested in it, but that is unlikely to put the company off.
It’s much more likely that the experience of the PS3 will mean Sony just scales back its ambitious plans and builds a console less graphically or processing heavy. In fact, the PS4 is likely to be based around the PS3 but offering new experiences and new gaming possibilities to help it compete with the Nintendo bandwagon.
So we come to Microsoft. According to Seeking Alpha, the successor to the Xbox 360 is already being worked on under the codename ‘Phoenix’. If this is true then it clearly shows that Microsoft understands how much the Xbox 360 has underperformed. For those not au fait with mythical beasts, the phoenix is a bird that rather than die, sets itself on fire and then re-emerges anew from the ashes.
I do think that Microsoft will “play again” and release a follow-up to the Xbox 360. But, where is it going to focus its attention? If the Wii has the innovation and casual gaming sectors sewn up, and Sony has the hardcore tech-savvy market to itself, Microsoft is going to either have to straddle to two or forge its own path.
All three hardware developers will now be drawing up their plans for the next generation, but we don’t yet know when the next battle will take place, or who will be competing. Only time will tell.

this is what sony or M$ should do:
make a smaller, cheaper, less tech-heavy console for the casual (and include some motion sensing stuff in their, to attract those that are uneducated about gaming, like the wii did)… but still keep the 360 and ps3 going… so that both casual and hardcore have a choice

Sony has invested billions into the PS3 CELL processor for playing games. They’re not going to let go of that and so it is more likely that the PS4 will have a new CELL processor with 10 or more gaming SPE’s (Synergistic processing elements). Too early to tell, but I think the Wii will have a replace sooner then anyone else. I know I am not alone when I say that the Wii I own is the least play console compared to my PS3 and Xbox. Give it another year when people get bored of the Wii like I did. At the same time, my PS3 and Xbox 360 makes me proud that I have a pair of consoles that compliment my HDTV.

I find it amazing that even with the astronomical sales of the Wii people still dismiss the impact it has had on the industry. The Wii is a wonderful piece of equipment that has so much unrealised potential that te other two are going to have to play catch up in the innovation area. All Nintendo has to do is produce a machine with the horsepower of the PS3 (not that hard at this stage) and a controller with Wii Motion Plus built in (probably already completed) to own the next 5-10 years.

I say this is what each should do.
Sony Should throw more money than it did with PS3 to PS4 Development. It should still be all high techy and Amazing power but push it much further. This time they won’t leave the Graphics card to last minute n switch minds for another. 3 USB ports at the back 1 for Camera one for Play TV and 1 Spare. Then another main focus should be Online Service they should Keep it free but have more features steal Xbox Live, There Gamerscore there Rep system there Invite or Join a friends game. Keep the XMB but also make a Dashboard or something else for other People so you can choose. The Store Get – PS4 section obviously then get Retro – PS3,PS2,PS1 section a PSP1 AND PSP2 Section and a MUSIC section Music Video Section and a TV/MOVIES/VIDEO/RENTAL section. Have Home out straight away all done up a lot better.Force all developers to Make In game XMB support Including Music,video,Store, Ingame Chat. Web browser and Have all the xbox live functions, Then make it a requirement to have achievements and trophies and Clan support and Tournament Support. That way we wont have missing features and Force them to have Full Home support as well Including the trophies in there. Get More Sony 1st Party Exclusives. And get a Few out straight away like Killzone 3, LBP2, Resistance 3, Warhawk2, Motorstorm 3, an MMORPG, MAG2, basically a good mix of games. Get some more 3rd Party exclusives as well and don’t let xbox have timed exclusives. Doing good with allowing us to upgrade our Hard drives and use other products on ur machine such as Linux and keyboards and Cams that are not Sonys. Get more Casual Games out and keep up the inititive and steal Ideas doesn’t hurt if u make them better e.g Wii remotes except stick to the pads but make the remote an extra not something thats used in everygame.
Xbox Will prob just upgrade its hardware no RROD and get rid of the unfair charges like £100 for a 120GB HDD, and rid of xbox live charges.
Wii, Get a HDD, Get more Adult games out whilst still appealing to kids. Have more Online play but not charged.

Microsoft has had more than its share of hardware defects, but they still have the largest game library out of the three.
As for the Wii, Ninetendo’s line-up at E3 was pathetic. Some features games included Animal crossing, a Kirby game, a copycat Pokemon game, and another Cooking Mama!?
I believe if public words spreads on the crapiness of Nintendo’s game library one of two things will happen: Customers will never buy another console, or they just might begin to side with Microsoft or Sony.

To be honest, I think the Wii is perfectly capable of a good shoot ‘em up.
Red Steel was quite good for a launch game. Resident Evil 4: Wii edition proved what could be done and then Metroid Prime: Corruption was just immense, but very much overlooked. I’ve played Halo 3 and Metroid Prime 3 to death, and I must say that I much prefer the gameplay in Prime 3.
That said, I still play much more on my Xbox 360 because there are more games available. Games developers are scared to release non-casual games for the Wii, but I think they’d do well to. After all, how many people have a Wii in the house that belongs to a wife/son/daughter/relative that you just don’t play on because there’s no really good games?
If you’re complaining about graphics, get a 480p cable for the wii and it looks good. Not as good as the 360, but the gameplay can be miles better, as in Metroid Prime 3′s case.

Still, it has some fun games. Its a shame Nintendo took Tuesdays Pizza budget and spent it on MP3′s advertising… That game could’ve been way bigger than it was.
Sony just needs to stop bending over and taking it. Taking the high road (‘we don’t pay for exclusives’) doesn’t do shit, this isn’t politics. If sony forked over for GTA and a few other games this gen. I’m sure we’d be looking at different sales totals between the 360 and ps3.

Red Steel purly sucked. Metroid also sucked because it has a low replay value (and no multiplayer). And they aint gonna make anymore Metroid games because the makers have a deal with EA making PS3 and 360 games. According to nintendo, animal crossing is a hard core game. And the wii is the only console where the controller costs twice as more than the games it sells. If Nintendo goes on like this, they will fail with this and the next console.
I laugh at nintendo. They wont even take advantage of their own console to make insane games. Idiots.

Well to tell you the truth guys and girls, I feel the ps3 has tons of potential power under the hood, but sony also made a mistake by rushing out the ps3, why you may ask?? Well first of all Launch was not so great since there were shortages, sony promised tons of stuff in the ps3 which occured delievered….1 month later…such as updates, sony rushed the console and did not have the technology to support its own console, since the cell processor is pretty hard to work with. Of course delieveres they may have promised tons of stuff, but they are delievering to the customers, people may say that sony wasted more than 3 Billion Dollars on a gaming console, but if you look again SONY is a big ass company than microsoft, sony, has its own line of music, videos, game producers, and other advance gadgets, well what does this tell us, SONY is getting money from many parts of its bussiness, and they can waste BILLIONS of dollars on there gadgets.
Microsoft also F*** their console they rush it one year before the wii and Ps3. Why?? well they thought that if they put there console first it would win the console war, which looks like its winning, but they have malfunctioning piece of garbage hardware, they die in less than 2 months, or if you are lucky it wont die on you very fast but it will eventually with all the spinning of the DVD. The update that is going to come on FALL is to make use of the Hard Drive rather than its DVD Rom, making more lasting than before. Xbox 360 have a 33% failure rate, many people will say “how fanboyish” but hey its the truth, do research people and then start talking.
Wii a the Wii, memorable times with friends, Mario o Mario tons of Mario, and a guy that acts like he was 12, seriously the guy that came out in E3 looked like he was very childish, He is a tall f*** but he acts like a kid. Well the wii has been successful cause of its motion sensing, which is pretty cool, but no one wants to make kiddie games.

What i meant was that the Xbox 360 will be able to compete with PLAYSTATION 3 technology. Most Xbox 360 games like Gears of War 2 use everything Xbox 360 has to offer. Gears of War can be done on PLAYSTATION 3 many time because PS3 has a lot of disk storage space. Also the Cell Broadband Engine the heart of PS3 is way beyond more powerful than the Xbox 360 XENON chip. Microsoft needs to step up a lot especially in the game department Sony has the most studios and the most new IP. Microsoft needs to stop milking out Halo and bring new Intellectual Property like Sony has. They will need to approach different region like Japan different than US or Europe. Also they have to stop depending on FPS game a little less and focus more on different categories like RPG PLATFORM FIGHTING. Sony has already done all that since the original PlayStation. The PlayStation brand has been a success unlike Xbox which Microsoft is just losing money they just started a profit after 7 years wow. The PS1 has over 100 million unit while PS2 still selling great it has sold over 140 million units worldwide and PSP is not number 1 but is doing also great PS3 is doing amazing competing with Xbox 360 they almost catch up to Xbox 360 sells.
I know a lot of people say PS3 is not better than Xbox 360 those are just people that don’t own a PS3 or just have an Xbox 360 or Wii or they can’t afford it. I love PlayStation it was my first gaming console that is why i take my time to write this long comments for it. I own all PlayStation all Xbox. face it xbox 360 was rushed, and yes it has many problems, it isn’t stated that its a rubbish console, xbox is great, just unreliable
and by the fact it needs to bring out another console is that games are much bigger now, DVD can’t take it.
I’m interested to see what Microsoft come out with next as disc format, because i can’t see them buying the rights to use blu ray, but then again films will be in blu ray for a while

Well… The original XBOX sold a bit over 20 mil and the X360 has not been able to get much further past that so far. I have always thought that it would be the real measurement of XBOX360 success if went over that number easily, but it has not been the case, even being released a full year ahead and had no real competition for almost two full year. I’d said that can be called under performing.
Since it hit that mark it has not been performing to well, all the insane people crucifying the author for his comments, are just the fanboys as always.
The PS3 need a real price drop urgent. If it does, before the holidays, it will kill the XBOX360. The line up coming is going to be too much for MS to handle.
Ms did all it could but in the end they failed to capture the PlayStation’s gamers, which are the real gaming market (140 Mil).
It the PS3 goes down to $ 299 this holiday, its game over for MS.
Nintendo has my respect. They pulled the greatest comeback in the history of video gaming. That said, I would not touch the Wii with a ten yards stick. Just not my taste in games anymore.
But to the people who criticize Nintendo for making kid’s games…

TOTAL RUBBISH! The current generation of playstation is tracking similarly to the previous generation if not better. People get caught up in the sales of the wii which are phenomenal but not surprising considering the simple game-play and the introductory price point.
A lot of people forget that sony has won the next generation HD-disc format war which is largely due to the ps3. It’s a big win for them and only justifies their use of the blu-ray drive which was so heavily criticised by so many internet sites (this one included). The playstation consoles are designed with innovative technology such that the graphics will improve with each year in the life cycle unlike the xbox and to a similar extent the wii which are essentially maxed out very early on.
Sony as a company has an ethos of bringing new innovations to the market. They don’t do things scaled back! They have publically stated numerous times that the PS3 was built as a 10-year console. They will not abandon the core gamer for the casual gamer.

Oh and about the HD format war.
Don’t think it really matters unless Sony really cranks up the speed of the blu ray drive in the ps4.
5-6 dvd-dl’s on the rival console, big deal. ‘Disc swapping!’ you say? Well, isnt ms releasing an installer for games on the 360 (and thus probably the next gen machine).
Blu ray player prices are already falling to the 2-300 range.

Blue ray is not pushing the ps3 paperweight past the 360, and the ps3 will continue to be in last place like it is now. I own a Wii and a 360. I prefer my 360 but the wife hates it which is why I got a Wii also. I think the 360 has way more to offer in every aspect. I would like to pick up a PS3 eventually mostly for the Blu-ray, but at $400 im content with upconverting my DVD’s. Sony probably lost me when they finally fessed up that the Killzone 2 video was CGI and not game play and that the gameplay wont be able to replicate what they showed. Sony should have learned last generation that you don’t have to have the “most powerful” hardware, Xbox 1 had better graphics then PS2 (and PS2 really didn’t have better graphics then Dreamcast or Gamecube). And in the previous generation the N64 looked better then PSone. But Sony dominated all of them. The bottom line is its really about who has the games that you like most.
If you like Kid Friendly Shovelware, Party games, and the usual re-hashed sequels go with a Wii.
If you like Shooters, Online play, and a little bit of everything go with an Xbox 360.
If you like a console who’s best selling point is that it also plays Blu-ray discs, but still underperforms in the game department even going into its third generation of games then go with a PS3.

I never liked it playing Gears of war but i beat it anyways i like Bioshock i don’t like rpg games well only Final Fantasy waiting for Versus XIII to come out. Microsoft and Epic Games exclusive deal agreement was for the first 2 Gears of War games of the trilogy. Mass Effect sold okay not that great but now is own by Electronic Arts and Mass Effect 3 is definitely coming to PLAYSTATION 3 i still won’t buy it i hate that game. As you can see Microsoft has basically nothing but lies. PS3 is the better system in everything is just a proven fact. so… xbox 360 has failed… well… if you mean having an avg game atach of 8 games per console or having sold 19 mill before the price dips below 200 (the historical make at which a console goes main stream)… keeping neck to neck with a newer system (PS3) and then turning the market around in Japan and outselling the Wii and PS3 in japan for the past mouth. yes xbox 360 has failed. i see your point… oh wait. not. i have a PS3 and an xbox and i much rather play my xbox because of features that i use during gaming. my Ps3 is basicly a Blu ray player all though WarHawk was a good game. the Wii did very well but both the Wii and Ps3 both have an avg attach ratio of less than 3. so on avg, the xbox has sold more games than the PS3 and Wii combined. consoles mean nothing. its the games that determine the winner. besides even if you did say it was the consoles that desided it, it would be Wii way out front and the xbox 360 and PS3 tied for 2nd on a mouthly bases. but, if you look at it over all, it would be the Wii out frount, followed not to far my the xbox then PS3 way behind. last month, the PS3 outsold the xbox in america. but it was only by 20,000. at that rate, it would take the PS3 20 years to even catch up to the xbox…. - came one year before PS3 giving an HW as powerfull as PS3;
- gave a ton of exclusive games;
- stole so many ex-exclusives from Sony (Devil May Cry, Resident Evil, Ace Combat, Katamari, GTA, Star Ocean, Final Fantasy, …);
- gave alot of games before the rival (Bioshock one year in advance, Oblivion one year in advance, etc…);
- gave alot of exclusive contents on hi-profile games (see GTA or Fallout 3);
- online service, DLC, trphies (achivments) ready and organized from day one;
- sells more games of the rivals;
- leads american market with twice the user base of PS3;
And all this from a console that last generation had 15% of the market while PS2 had 70%.

The next month will be interesting, when multiplattform games like Force Unleashed, Cod5 or Quantum of Solace appear. It looks like this games will be technically good on all plattforms. The Wii Versions will have good graphics, mainly the same graphics than Xbox360/PS3 only with lower resolution but with better controls.
So if these games sell well or better on Wii that would mean hard times for xbox/ps3.
Also important are the sales of some of the ambitious exclusive 3rd-Party Wii-Games, like de Blob, Mushroom Men, Fragile, Cursed Mountain, Dead Rising etc. And of course the action games from Nintendo like Disaster: Day of Crisis, Fatal Frame 4, Kid Icarus etc.

The Wii is doing extremly well as always the games for it now are starting to hit the core market, so Ninty will defo be in for next gen all they need is more graphical power and better games not all these crappy cash ins. Ninty needs a new console in 2011-2012.

No, you don’t buy a browser, they give it to you because the one that is used the most brings in boatloads of advertising revenue. This is the reason that MS was almost broken up for operating an illegal monopoly and had to pay a fine in the billions in Europe. In response to the kid who wrote xbox360 has underperformed, it’s irrelevant which console is more profitable to their respective manufacturers, but I’ve actually owned both consoles for just over 6 months. I’m also tech savvy but you don’t have to be a genius to figure out that the PS3 has superior hardware. But it doesn’t matter, b/c xbox360 performs on par with PS3 both in speed and graphics. BTW, I can clearly convince anyone that xbox360 is better and here is the reason why:
1. xbox360 is hackable. This means you can download game torrents, burn them on your PC and play them on your xbox360. You never have to spend another dime buying games for your xbox360.
2. xbox360 has better ergonomic controllers. PS3 controllers are made for midget hands and men with small d*cks. I can’t hold the damn controller for more than an hour without cramping up my fingers.
Xbox360 is simple yet effective. PS3 has lots of bells and whistles that are unnecessary and with all that processing power, it still doesn’t perform any better than xbox360. It’s like having a ferrari that only goes 35mph max. And littlebigplanet suck my hairy big balls, b/c I was NEVER able to play that garbage online. the network is slower than a gawdamn snail.
xbox360 is just a more cost effective solution to games of all levels. And it’s hackable. FREE games for life! One last note, even if ps3 was hackable, you’d have to buy a blueray burner for over $300 and each disc costs about $10. Just not cost effective at all. And did I mention, I hate that small ass gamepad that they make for midgets in japan?

One game will change the world as we know it, Halo Reach. ROFLMFAO lol but seriously why is everyone looking at processing power and all that other stuff. Why dont we actually take a look at the games all the consoles have made (oh and im gonna start off by saying Nintendo doesnt have a chance people, stop dreaming. The wii is obviously a failure now. at the begging it was EXTREMELY popular but now its just boring and many people dont like it anymore). MW2 was a huge success but i personally hate the damn game.. Halo 3 was another success and it was an Xbox 360 exclusive. (score 1 xbox360.) Halo wars and halo 3: odst werent that great but Halo Reach!?!?! Thats gonna be one of the greatest games ever made. I want to see how sony comes back from that. I guess we’ll all just have to wait and see.
