The Guardian Peter Moore interview in full – Best bits and epilogue
Peter Moore’s recent interview with The Guardian threw up many interesting and newsworthy points, some of which we focussed on here at GAMER.BLORGE. However, we can’t cover everything so here is a kind of ‘best of’ from the interview.
Peter Moore, head of EA Sports and formerly head of Xbox and head of Sega of America, recently gave an interview which was printed in full in The Guardian. This airing of the full transcript meant we got some explosive comments from one of the giants of the gaming industry, a man who has been involved in all different sides of the business.
So, now that the interview has been printed in full, I thought it appropriate to take a look back at the best bits and provide a kind of epilogue to the whole thing. In fact, Moore provided the epilogue himself as he wanted to clarify a few comments and have a final say (PR back-pedalling if ever I saw it).
It seems neither Moore or Electronic Arts were aware that the interview would be printed in full, and so some of the comments were deemed to have come across as slightly negative. Moore therefore provided an epilogue which includes gushing testimonials to the companies, products, and brands he wasn’t quite so kind to during the interview. Rather than me reprinting it in full, here’s the link. Remember to have the sick bag at the ready.
But what about the interview itself?
The first thing Moore spoke about was the killing off of the Dreamcast, a decision he took himself. Sega missed a sales target and that was it, game over. Moore ended up having to fire a lot of people.
Moore also spoke about the killing off of the original Xbox, something that happened far too quickly in many people’s eyes, including my own. It turns out that the decision was purely based on the fact that Microsoft was losing money on every console sold, so the Xbox 360 needed to be pushed out as soon as possible.
A surprising titbit was when Moore explained how people inside Microsoft were opposed to the company moving in to the gaming business, although that seems to have changed now, with most company insiders being proud of the product and what it stands for.
Moore also expressed how unhappy he was with Sony’s PR rabble-rousing for the launch of the PS2 and PS3. He particularity hated the Killzone 2 demo which was shown at E3 2005 as if it were in-game footage when we now know it was clearly pre-rendered.
And last but not least, Moore seemed to point both guns at legendary games developer Rare and state that the industry had passed them by and left them in a bygone era where they were no longer relevant.
Moore is an intelligent man who makes for an interesting interviewee. This five part series of interviews printed in The Guardian has offered an insight in to the industry that us gamers usually aren’t privy to. Moore may have put his foot in it a few times, but I, for one, applaud his honesty.

Over all a pretty good interview. I found it funny with the “let them eat cake” comment.
I’d really like to know what exec made the decision to release the 360 with the hardware problem and then let the problem “sort itself out”.
That person needs to be dragged in the street and shot.
