Will Xbox 360 casual gamer ads beat the Wii & PS3 this Christmas?
It was already clear to all industry watchers that Microsoft was trying to alter the image of the Xbox 360 from a console for the hardcore to a console for all, and that has now been confirmed. But, will the new casual gamer baiting ‘Live your Moment’ advertising campaign enable the Xbox 360 to beat the PS3 and Wii this holiday season?
Microsoft is currently doing all it can to try and inject some momentum in to sales of the Xbox 360 as we approach the all-important holiday season. First, we had the price cuts across the whole range, which makes the Xbox 360 the cheapest option for a gamer entering this generation. Then we had the decision to try and appeal to a broader demographic with a lurch to the casual end of the market.
And now we have Microsoft launching its new Xbox 360 advertising campaign. According to Edge, the new ‘Live your Moment’ campaign is the largest global ad campaign in the history of the Xbox brand. More money is being spent on marketing the console this Christmas than was spent either at launch or at the release of Halo 3.
The tagline or theme of the campaign is ‘Live your Moment’, and the ads are being squarely aimed at attracting “the casual and social segments” of gaming society – basically, those people who play games for a couple of hours every weekend when they have friends around their house.
Microsoft describes the campaign as the following:
“It’s about real people having emotional and connected Xbox gaming and entertainment experiences with their friends and family.”
So those people who already own an Xbox 360 aren’t real people, just figments of our imaginations. Obviously that’s not the case but it’s clearer now than ever that Microsoft is trying to reposition the Xbox as a mainstream living room device for all, a long way away from the idea most people have of it as the console for the hardcore.
The marketing campaign, which is due to include TV spots, billboard ads, and print ads, as well as digital marketing and social networking efforts, has already kicked off in the US, with Europe following soon. The emphasis will be on the price of the hardware, the software line-up, and the new, improved Xbox Live.
So, what impact will the new campaign have on the current gen hardware battle this Christmas?
If I’m honest, I think the Wii still has this Christmas wrapped up over the Xbox 360 and PS3. While sales are slowly dipping, there is still massive demand out there for the Nintendo console, and I can see many kids who missed out last year asking for a Wii again this year.
So the real battle is between the Xbox 360 and PS3 for second spot. The price cuts will at least make some difference, with many parents likely to be attracted by the new $199 sweet spot price of the Xbox 360. Sony hasn’t done a thing in retaliation in terms of price cuts or marketing, but it does have two huge tricks up its sleeve in the form of Playstation Home and LittleBigPlanet, two guaranteed system sellers if ever I saw them.
The next three months are destined to be a key battleground for dominance of this console war. Who do you think will emerge victorious come January?

The 360. I’m a PS3 fan, and a vocal critic of MS nickel and dime console strategy, but I am also rather misanthropic and don’t have faith in the average consumer (or parent) to do some simple math.
I would love for the ps3 to win second, but am secure enough in my investment to not give a shit if it doesn’t: there are enough PS3s out there that it wont go the way of the dreamcast.

I think the advertisement campaign is not bad at all, they have already the hardcore gamers, why not to attract the casual a little bit ? it’s true that they aren’t gonna make it fully with XBLA because as Peter Moore said it’s just “Casual content for hardcore gamers”, so this I think is a good approach.

Perhaps I’m someone who has never actually posted here before, or at the least not regularly enough to be known, Perhaps one day I saw a retarded little child called Ivan_PSP who was the definition of a fanatic blinded irrational fanboy, and I couldn’t help but want to impersonate him and put shit on him, just for fun and to maybe teach him a lesson, let him see how stupid it is for one person to constrain themselves to such a fanatical line of though. I couldn’t help but think, this person’s blinded zealotism to his console for no reason and lack of true gaming experience and knowledge was just screaming for someone to give him shit and maybe knock some sense into him. Its people with such blind faith that culminates in true atrocities, Imagine if Ivan just happened to hear some true extremist ideology, and actually connected with it on some level. Hell, we’d have another KKK member, another terrorist or another homophobe in society.
Furthermore to add to that fun, I found his website and hacked into it. I was very tempted to drop some photoshopped photos of Ivan with cocks in his hands instead of the PSP’s, but hey, I thought this was already fun enough, and decided to leave it all alone. I would have if it didn’t escalate to this point so quickly.
What was truly interesting, is how everything just broke down and you ALL went and accused harry, someone who’s writing style resembles mine in no way AT ALL. He got caught up as collateral damage in my fun. I think this has gone far enough as well, because I have got all the kicks I wanted. I gave you all the link to Ivans website, I got Ivan all fired up and angry, and maybe he is a little more aware of how much of an irrational blinded douche he is, and HOPEFULLY he learnt a fucking lesson.
