Sony: PS3 separate from the herd – Xbox 360, Wii are dead & dumb
Xbox 360 and Wii owners, I’m talking to you and only you now. Apparently, your consoles are “dead, dumb terminals” that are going to start looking dated over the next few years. So stick that in your pipe and smoke it.
The console wars are an inevitable and constant part of the games industry, with each generation seeing fanboys springing up eager to defend their console of choice until they grow up. But, the companies themselves don’t usually get involved in the mud-slinging, leaving their customers to do the dirty work for them.
Of course, you get the odd incident where boardroom bravado spills out in to the public domain, but these are few and far between, with company executive usually keeping things professional. But one man seems intent on changing that, and his name is Scott Steinberg, SCEA’s vice president of product marketing.
Now, obviously this guy is going to be a big supporter of the Playstation 3, it is his job after all. But I do wonder if laying in to the competition is really the way to go about things. Steinberg writes a blog for Edge Online, and in his latest post, he has not only talked up the PS3’s future, but dismissed the other consoles at the same time.
In a long, rambling post about the advantages he believes the PS3 has over its competitors, Steinberg rips in to the Wii and Xbox 360. Videogamer reports that his words of wisdom include the following nuggets.
The brilliance of PS3 is that it’s not a dead, dumb terminal like other machines. We can throw layers of firmware into that box and always be contemporary with technology. We can reflect and respond to how people are using entertainment.
In the next few years, you’re going to start to see us separate from the herd. Some of the other platforms are going to look very dated because their life spans are so much shorter than ours.
And we’re also offering more first-party exclusives. It’s a major flaw in some of our competitors that they don’t have the development resources to showcase on a global basis the diversity and the creativity of a development team that’s a thousand strong.
If you’re a competitor I’ve got bad news for you because we’ve got some absolute blockbusters that are in the works, some of them new IP, some of them existing IP, that we’re building specifically for the PS3.
From a competitive standpoint our competitors are going to have a tougher road now then even in 2008. But for PlayStation 3 consumers, it means more quality and more choice.
So let’s deal with those statements one at a time.
The PS3 may well be more future-proofed than either the Xbox 360 or Wii, but that hardly means that those consoles are either dead or dumb. In fact, in terms of sales, it could be argued that it’s the PS3 that is currently dead, and the lack of any price cut on the horizon is a dumb decision for sure.
The Xbox 360 has potentially as long a lifespan as the PS3 has in front of it, so Steinberg must have been referring to the Wii. But, is Nintendo really going to be bothered? The Wii will sell in huge quantities for the next couple of years before being replaced by new hardware that is also likely to be bought by all and sundry. Meanwhile, Sony will still be trying to sell the PS3 to people.
I concede the point on the first-party exclusives, as the PS3 does look to have a stronger line-up than either the Xbox 360 or Wii. However, those platforms also have some great games on the horizon and both have a larger installed user-base at present to actually buy the software.
My advice to Scott Steinberg: leave the console wars to those of us in the trenches, it’s not becoming of you to start bitching at your rivals. And to be honest, you’re not actually that good at it.

Perhaps I’m someone who has never actually posted here before, or at the least not regularly enough to be known, Perhaps one day I saw a retarded little child called Ivan_PSP who was the definition of a fanatic blinded irrational fanboy, and I couldn’t help but want to impersonate him and put shit on him, just for fun and to maybe teach him a lesson, let him see how stupid it is for one person to constrain themselves to such a fanatical line of thought. I couldn’t help but think, this person’s blinded zealotism to his console for no reason and lack of true gaming experience and knowledge was just screaming for someone to give him shit and maybe knock some sense into him. Its people with such blind faith that culminates in true atrocities, Imagine if Ivan just happened to hear some true extremist ideology, and actually connected with it on some level. Hell, we’d have another KKK member, another terrorist or another homophobe in society.
Furthermore to add to that fun, I found his website and hacked into it. I was very tempted to drop some photoshopped photos of Ivan with cocks in his hands instead of the PSP’s, but hey, I thought this was already fun enough, and decided to leave it all alone. I would have if it didn’t escalate to this point so quickly.
What was truly interesting, is how everything just broke down and you ALL went and accused harry, someone who’s writing style resembles mine in no way AT ALL. He got caught up as collateral damage in my fun. I think this has gone far enough as well, because I have got all the kicks I wanted. I gave you all the link to Ivans website, I got Ivan all fired up and angry, and maybe he is a little more aware of how much of an irrational blinded douche he is, and HOPEFULLY he learnt a fucking lesson. Probably not though.

When they release a firmware patch that improves the PS3s crap GPU I’ll be impressed.

One thing you have to agree with is First Party support. Sony First party is larger than MS’s and Nintendo’s combined.
My only problem, is that it takes so damn long for some of those games to come out.

And how long will that lead last CAD? That number dropped from 28,000 to 14,000 right now. That number should be increasing, not decreasing. That means that the 360 will have to keep releasing rpg’s every week.
Little Big Planet and White Knight Chronicles can very well propel the PS3 in the lead in Japan.

I belive the corporate elite could use a bit of humility. This kind of talk reminds me of the next generation that “…doesn’t start until we say so.”
However I find the PS3 lineup is rather interesting and impressive (with MGS4 leading the way) these days, and I have also noticed that the days of second rate ports seems to be over.
These are good times to be a gamer.

There’s a huge difference between this man talking trash like a school boy and the Genesis campaign slogan. Genesis did do what nintendidn’t. They had sonic and something to go up against almost every nintendo title at the time and they were the only two in the game. Sega used a witty little slogan and I don’t see this man slandering the other two companies as witty banter or anything but pathetic.
If he had said
” Sony and the PlayStation 3 are leading this generation of gaming into UNCHARTED territory with a SOLID line-up. Since the PS3 has been released the console war has changed and in this Killzone our competitors are going to feel the PAIN when the Heavy Rain falls.”
That would be comparable to the sega slogan but he didn’t he came out slinging mud at the people he’s trying to convert.

The Genesis quote was to show how long corporate competition has been throwing punches at each other in front of the public..nothing more..nothing less. Don’t look too deep into it. Although a commercial airing that quote to the general public(while witty and regardless of truth behind it ) seems way more immature and pathetic then someone who only the hardcore (us) will even hear.
Kind of reminds me of the ps1 Sonic storming the Nintendo building and kicking shit over.
However Peter Moore in his interview was quoted saying that corporate mudslinging is good for the industry. It gets the fanbase into it, and causes a competitive nature with loyalty between consoles. Do you have any problem when MS does something similar or is that OK?

I don’t play favorites, he could work for any company and I’d think he went about it all wrong. I own both the 360 and PS3 right now (had a wii and sold it) and love them both but they each have their own weaknesses. I said it was pathetic because he makes a six figure salary no doubt and he has to resort to calling the competition names instead of pointing out his products strong points and letting people know why it would be a smart purchase for any and every household.
He started his statement like a playstation only fanboy on n4g would and it seems extremely unprofessional. I think competition and the occasional well placed jab at a weak spot are great for the industry and lead to companies and developers trying harder to please gamers. This guy just needs to learn the difference between a jab and a sucker punch.
I laughed during ratchet and clank future when they made the “superior online” and “at least i don’t have a 33% failure rate” jokes . It made the game even better then it already was

The Wii has proved that a cheap piece of hardware and a nifty (to some) controller will outsell the competition, given the price tag I think thats mostly the reason. I am happy with my XBOX 360, I own 2 they are played everyday without fail and there is more great games on the 360 than I will mostly likely ever get to, well before the next XBOX makes it onto the scene. Can this really be said of the PS3?? I know the Wii can’t make this claim unless you are hopelessly devote to mario..

Yes, I have a PS3, I love it, but I’m getting an Xbox 360 because there’s exclusives on there I’d really love to play.
