The newly revealed DS looks to copy the Sony PSP

The newly revealed DS looks to copy the Sony PSP There is a new rumor doing the rounds on the Web today. According to a reliable source, a new Nintendo DS will be out before the end of the year. The new DS is said to sport many new features that will make it similar to the PSP.

According to reports from Nekki Newspaper and Monex, there is word of a new DS currently in the works inside Nintendo headquarters. The new DS will allegedly have a built in camera, music playback function and enhanced Wi-fi. The sources are considered very reliable despite no official announcement from Nintendo. The guys over at Ars Technica contacted Nintendo to get an official statement.

A Nintendo representative, said:

“We are always developing new products… However, since nothing has been announced officially, we are unable to comment at this time.”

It is a different variation of the run of the mill PR response, but nevertheless promising to hear that Nintendo is hard at work on developing new products that I can throw my money at.  The new DS is also said to support a larger screen and will cost a little more than the current DS iteration. There is also a rumor that a SD card slot will be included for Wii/DS cross functionality.

All of the features revealed for the new DS are very similar to the capabilities the PSP currently has. I am not sure if copying the PSP is the best route for the DS as it caters to a completely different audience. Maybe Nintendo is trying to steal some of the hardcore mediaphiles from Sony. Nintendo should consider adding in video playback to the list of features to sweeten the deal.

The rumor points to the end of the year for the launch of the new DS. Apparently there will be new games that will take advantage of the camera as well, potentially splitting the user base from the haves, and have-nots. Nintendo has done something similar before with the announcement of the Wii MotionPlus. I suppose we will now have games for the NDS lite-plus.

or maybe the psp is the best handheld and nintendo are lucky bastards to have soo many immature people in the world to buy their products even though they suck…..and now ANOTHER company is going to steal sony’s ideas…..with out sony, Wii and 360 would be total shit

  2. harry sachz:

Yes Matt, because Sony have never stolen ideas of Microsoft or Nintendo.

I just asked my friend, and he still thinks you’re an idiot.

  3. me:

I hate Nintendo, they’re just lucky. After all they’re killing Sony with both they’re products so they must be super lucky. It’s the only explanation!

  4. SW:

Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight matt, because Nintendo are stealing ideas left right and center….

Damn, I mean, I love my ps3 too dude (Wipeout HD for anyone out there is AWESOME, and for $20 its a steal!) but man, if anyone’s stealing from anyone its other companies stealing from Nintendo.

The DS isn’t lucky, its just another example of Nintendo targeting a market and hitting the bulls eye.

  5. Gringo guy:

Yeah, Matt, everyone who buys a Nintendo product is immature.

And you being a Sony fanboy saying everything sucks is mature? Give me a break.

  6. AwesomeDC:

i like both psp and ds. period. btw the rumor is false. nintendo denied about the new DS.

  7. hotmeat:

MIKE FERRO- Please put a stop to this guy impersonating Ivan. It really has gone on long enough. Please delete his posts so people don’t read his them. It doesn’t look good for your site!

  10. Matt:

I don’t see the need for this. I still have my DS fat, it still works well, and I want to play games, not play music or take pictures.

I’m not sure how true this even is. There may be some things that Nintendo could do to make the DS better for games, but Nintendo isn’t the company with the “cram as much as you can into a console” ideas.

If even Nintendo starts going this direction, I will be very disappointed. One reason I never got, and don’t even want a PSP is because it tries to do too much. Give me something to play games on. If I want a cell phone, camera, or anything else, I’ll get it, myself.

  11. Arvis:

I for one think the DS is the ghetto-ist handheld ever conceived, but you can’t argue with those sales numbers (frustrating as they are).

Then again, I’m not crazy about handhelds in general.

Pardon, I meant “ghetto-est.” Gotta make sure I spell my made-up words correctly…

    BOOHOO MY VAGINA IS BLEEEEEDING!

  14. harry sachz:

IP bans are easy to get around anyway. Most home internet connections are dynamic IPs, so all you have to do is reboot your router and presto, you have a new IP!

  15. Wylie:

Lol, my comments as Ivan get deleted. How can they tell the fake ones? Everything all Ivans say is pure crap, fake and real.

  16. Neil:

Yhup the new DS has a camera, browser and both screens are now touch sensitive.

The PSP better get ready for yet another trouncing hahah!
