Details of PS4 revealed: Sony planning to beat Xbox 720
It looks like the PS4 is being developed much sooner than you or I may have thought, with a report indicating that Sony is currently designing the specs for the next generation console. The source also states that Sony will try to beat Microsoft to the punch next generation.
According to the source, a Japanese news agency, PC Watch Impress (Google Translated link), Sony Computer Entertainment is querying some ideas with the third party developers in regards to the design of the PS4. The news report also indicates that the PS4 will be twice as powerful as the PS3.
Currently, by conventional computing standards the PS3 is the most powerful gaming console out on the market, capable of performing 2.0 teraFLOPS (trillion floating point operation per second). If that power was doubled, the PS4 would be capable of performing at an incredible 4.0 teraFLOPS.
The report also states that Sony is planning on utilizing the CELL BE instead of developing a completely new architecture. The reason for this change in strategy is so that Sony can stay competitive with the cost of development and to reduce the learning curve for third party developers.
With the billions invested into the research and development of Sony’s Cell processor, executives are adamant about reaping the benefits of the technology long into the future. A diagram in the news report shows how the Cell processor was shrunk from 90mm to 45mm, thus reducing manufacturing cost and power consumption by half.
According to PC Watch Impress, Sony wants to get its next console out before the next Xbox iteration to prevent the type of lead Microsoft built up with its one year head start this time around. In order to do so, Sony is planning on getting the new development SDKs into the hands of all third party studios by 2011.
However, the actual PS4 may come out several years after 2011. Considering that Sony always overlap a few years in between consoles, that would put the PS4 in line to retire the PS3 eight to ten years into its life. Could this be the beginning of the fight for the future of the video game console supremacy between Microsoft and Sony? It will be interesting to see what kind of system Microsoft is currently planning for the next generation.

How much do you think that hand model got paid to hold that chip?
It’s too early for me to even start thinking about the next consoles and how much power they will have. Sony isn’t known for rushing out their products, so I would have to see it to believe it. I for one won’t buy a new console if it is released too early. I’m not going to support these companies coming out with new consoles every 4 or 5 years.(if that’s what happens)

I discovered that I liked Women, so I figured I should join the men and get rid of my PS3.
So I did. I now have hair on my chest, my voice has actually dropped three octives, I don’t sing words anymore, and I have two girlfriends.
It’s so nice now, I went out and got a really cheap copy of Bioshock, used . . .cause it’s been out so long . . But my gay friend who still has his PS3, he had to pay like $60 for last years game . . . crazy.

I think it is a smart move from Sony – this would allow them to release the PS4 a lot earlier & cheaper, as the development costs should be minimal, and coders should have plenty of time to perfect the coding for it with the experience garnered on the PS3. If they are smart, they would allow for a scalable architecture, where the same game could run on both the PS3 and with higher resolution & better graphics, on the new PS4. This is a similar development model to the PC. Then Sony will finally have the killer console on their hands that the PS3 was meant to be in the first place.

This is being compared to the Nintendo way where thay hardly upgrade the hardware. Saying they didnt learn a thing is stupid, when it would seem like they are learning the cheap way from nintendo. It seems like they are being cost effective by doing this eliminating your other point.
Do you really believe by the time this comes out developers are not going to understand the cell. They seem to finally be getting it now. recent Multiplats loom identical and exclusives blow other shit out of the water.

btw..360 had the same problems when it came out as the ps3 did. Lack of games. I dont know what false reality you were in the end of 05-most of 06 but the 360 had its problems with getting games out there. I could name on one hand all the great games that came out before gears (nov 06)
As for online infrastructure…your right Sony had none. they do know though. MS had 5 years on them. I believe sony is doing a good job catching up. MS has already tried and copy some of their ideas so they must be doing something right.

OMFG If the next DREAM aka PS4 utilizes the Cell Broadband Engine that means that it will be %100 backwards compatible with PS1 PS2 and PS3 can you say HELL YEAH or what. That would definitely be an impressive great achievement i meant great Trophy LoL. Kaz Hirai must be on pressure since Ken Kutaragi the creator of the greatest gaming system on the universe is no longer handling the hardware creation anymore of PlayStation. Twice the the power of the PS3 is a big task. I guess this will make Sony most advanced super high tech company. I don’t think that this proves a PS4,
because we have the 45nm manufacturing technology now, by 2011 we my have 22.25nm tech, I think this is more proof for a slimline ps3 that is slightly more powerful, smaller and because of the less heat generated from the cells it would would have smaller fans due to less heat smaller fans means less noise

As if I am stupid enough to take that wager! It more than likely will get a lot of ‘praise’, as we’ve seen recently that the hype machine determines the game score in most cases.
Case in point, GTA IV. Sure it’s a good game, but is it really worth 10/10?? It was hyped beyond belief, and the reviewers were all caught in it.
Another one, MGS4. A game where you spend more time watching cutscenes rather than playing. That was not worth the 10/10 it got. Again, reviewers were caught in the hype.
An example of the non-hype machine – Too Human. A lot of people had already judged the game dead on arrival before it was even released for really lame reasons, e.g not liking Denis Dyack. Reviewers were influenced by this and gave it a lower score than it deserved. It was by no means a classic, but it was a great game with a lot of replay value (i’ve clocked it 3 times now and am still not bored of it). It probably deserved around an 8/10, rather than the 6.5 etc that it was getting.
So in saying that, your little dolls game will probably get high scores, whether it is deserved is another question.

Don’t be so sure harry. First review of lbp is in, 7 out of 10.
Reviewer said that it looks pretty, but lacks longevity. Level creation tools are crude and take too long to build. Reviewer said that the game was not fun to play.
Sorry boys, maybe resistance 3 might be good? Don’t hold your breath for killzone 2, it looks like a grey and green slow motion piece of crap.

you seem to be overlooking all the praise the beta is receiving and only concentrating on the negative.the first review of the beta..hence..unfinished game. There are still bugs because its an old build. playing the beta now (unfortunately at a friends…cuz I couldn’t get in), and Ill tell you from my experience this game will be a classic. If the reviewer doesn’t want to build a level they don’t have to. If the game sells 1 million and only 5% of the people build levels..you will have 50,000 new levels to play, aside from the 50 that come on the disc. That seems like Longevity to me.

Ill concede with gta since you are right. it was overhyped. Like all gta’s the presentation and story were awesome, but it lacked in some areas (gameplay namely) that would doom other games…. but…gta is untouchable!
MGS4 however is awesome in all respects. you can even skip the cut scenes if they’re too much for you. My biggest problem with you commenting on MGS4 is I know you don’t have a ps3 and therefore an opinion for an exclusive. Sort of how I’ll keep my opinion of Too Human to myself.

wylie – i don’t think sony would be that stupid to start bragging about first to market this early only to fail. the price is still the hurdle they won’t be able to overcome. The ONLY saving grace is the fact bluray drives will be a fraction of what they are now in costs, but with Toshiba owning the Cell manufacturing, you can bet they won’t be helping sony on the cost. What you ps3 fanboys forget is the fact that the “cell” is a networking architecture, NOT optimized for gaming, thus why the 360′s architecture is better for gaming at half the cost.
it’s even funnier watching the other ps3 fanboys claim ninty has no “fun” games, while the wii outsells the ps3 by HUGE margins… and who’s buying? yep… GAMERS. this says more about the fanboy’s inabilty to distinguish their own tastes from the rest of the world.

I read your post..but your still wrong.
the only thing you said correct in your post was the the cell is not manufactured by toshiba. (Sony IBM and Toshiba developed it however) and Blu ray will be significantly cheaper.
PS2 to PS3 spec comparison was somewhere along the line of 20X more powerful. a bit more than 2x, and makes sense why theres such a price differential.
If you spec out the gamecube to wii, its almost twice as powerful. closer to 1.5X and most people consider it just like a gamecube.
I claim prices will reduce, because by 2011 the cell tech will be a lot more cost effective. I’m having difficulty understanding how you don’t get that!!

Kev- it wasn’t Sony bragging, it was PC Watch Impress with that story. There is no link so I haven’t read that article. However this article never states that anyone from Sony said they were planning on being first to market. They probably aren’t far off on a the time for the PS4 though. More than likely we will see it in 2012 or 2013. Just my thoughts anyways.

Reasonable Matt is here to say that when you get so close to realistic, 20x as much power means a VERY small difference in how realistic the game can be. With no change in medium, the game is just as big. More power means little.
Sony not beefing up the PS4 that much is a good move. It’s pointless to increase the power more for such small gains in games.

Umm…ok. Think some of you should realise this is an article and not a forum. You seriously must be the dirt of the human gene pool to troll a freaking news article.
Though i should welcome the Cell BE CPU and it was a smart call to head in the PPC direction. Since microsoft is pretty much screwed in choosing a suitable CPU in the next generation (IBM has gone anti-MS), the Cell BE would make life easier for everyone. Not only that, it would give Sony a chance to reclaim investment even though abit is injected to get additional functionalities.
Think this is a marketing ploy against microsoft as they are planning for their next console. I think microsoft would head towards a x86 direction and snag a fusion cpu from amd or something. Either way, this generation is only getting started.
I dont think the wii2 will sell as well as it did in this generation. I got a feeling that the same marketing wont apply twice.

I know a woman in her late 30s who is a teacher and has never been interested in video games. She played Wii Sports at a party and bought herself a Wii a week later.
