PS3 and Xbox 360 owners can now get Netflix with PlayOn
Many Xbox 360 owners have been eagerly waiting for the update coming out near the end of the year which will allows Netflix movies to be streamed onto the system. In the mean time, Xbox 360, PS3 and PSP owners will be able to watch movies via Netflix very soon using an application called PlayOn.
This past E3, Microsoft made a surprising announcement regarding a new partnership with Netflix. The new partnership would enable Netflix to stream movies straight to the Xbox 360. Thus allowing customers to rent and watch movies without waiting for it in the mail. However, there is one catch; this update won’t be coming out on the Xbox 360 till the end of the year. This is where PlayOn comes in to the picture.
The nifty application, PlayOn, is a media server program developed by The Media Mall. According to Engadget, the application will instantly stream Hulu, CBS, YouTube, ESPN and Netflix onto the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. I ran a short test with the application and it seems to stream quite fast with very little lag.
Currently, due to the overwhelming demand for the application, The Media Mall’s website is down. I wouldn’t worry too much if you weren’t able to get your hands on PlayOn today, because it is still in beta. There are bound to be some issues that need to be worked out.
Once PlayOn is officially released you will have 60 days to try it out before you have to decide whether or not to purchase it for $30. The application looks promising and depending on how well it works with Netflix, it may be an instant buy for some.
For those who own the Xbox 360, PlayOn will still be a great option even after the Netflix update arrives on the Xbox 360. PlayOn will allow you to watch the latest episode of Heroes or Survivor.
PlayOn would benefit PS3 owners as it is a more convenient alternative to using the browser or booting into Yellow Dog Linux to do your streaming video watching. If you can get your hands on the application, I highly recommend that everyone give PlayOn at least a try.

OMG..they may catch up in Japan. FF13 wont be out in Japan for the 360..only NA. the 360 got a good rpg out in Japan and they are selling in as a bundle. All in all…both consoles are doing pretty bad in the land of hand helds.
While sometimes this streaming Netflix could be good ( i personally thought it was a good E3 announcement) I sill really enjoy quality, and the video quality sucks on this. There’s also not too much available. Sometimes its good to catch up on TV shows if they even have them there. They need better quality and more titles.

Not too much available? Are you blind? I’ve been running this for about a month now and other than the fact it requires a PC running all the time to do the transcoding/streaming to your device, there are thousands of videos available! It IS UPnP, so there is no interactivity or search (yet?), but there is definately no lack of content. Everything from the TV networks comes down to your PS3 (and X360?) in very decent quality MPEG-2 at DVD bitrates. Of course most YouTube looks like crap, but hey, garbage in garbage out.

There is nothing new in there. Like I said it’s good for catching up on older shows. I think I caught season 2 of weeds on it.
Its a good idea..I said that before. I just wish there was more content and better quality.

360 beat the PS3 for one month and one moth only. The overall sales numbers show the PS3 is crushing the 360 in Japan…. try looking it up Sega.
White Knight Chronicles is due December 25th for PS3 only in Japan. I am sure that will help turn the tide again.

I hate douche bags… but any way, back to the subject at hand… this sounds really cool. I’ll have to check it out. I’m not convinced that I’ll pay the $30.00 a month for it, but it’s a very cool feature none the less.

Xbox 360 in Japan is 700,000 + and PS3 is 2 Million + really that is not that big of a gap and if the trend continues I think Sony has something to worry about.

I don’t care what systems netflix comes out on, they can have it. I don’t want sub-standard quality movies that are streamed and take up bandwidth for hours, that you don’t even get to own.

Xbox fanboys make me laugh. When Xbox 360 manages to sell a little better then the rival they think the entire world is changing. I never ever saw any PS3 fanboy or fan do that. Plus once those Xbox 360 timed exclusive RPG are expired so will the Xbox selling. Final Fantasy XIII will be exclusive to PLAYSTATION3 in japan. Watch the beat down coming soon plus PS3 has sold there way more Xbox won’t ever catch up especially in any and unwanted territory.

I wish my favorite console of all time would return…..SEGA!!!! With the latest video game consoles, there are too many disappointments!
With the PS3, fans have to wait almost 3 years for a virtual service (HOME) to be released. Sony has boasted during the summer of “trophies” which to me seem like copying Xbox 360’s achievements.
Hardly any games support Trophies in PS3! And not only that, there was a global cry for in game xmb on PS3. And since it was released during the summer, hardly any company has released a patch to their games to SUPPORT IT!!!!
I mean COME ON!!!! NONE OF MY 22 PS3 GAMES SUPPORTS THAT SHIT! I was wrong to buy a PS3 in the first place…….But not only that, only 4 of my games on PS3 actually rumble but one of them (Warhawk) will only rumble online. So that makes 3.
What a FUCK! No doubt that PS3 should’ve been released at a MUCH later time!!!! The only GOOD EXCLUSIVE game(s) on PS3 that I can think of, with a 9.0 or higher rated, are Metal Gear Solid 4 and………….wait. That’s the only exclusive PS3 game that has a ranking of 9.0 or higher???

Although I’m skeptical of the duriability and reliability of the 360, the 360 actually has FUN games. I enjoy playing Grant theft Auto 4 on the 360 than the PS3. I don’t know why but I just do.
The PS3 has better single player games but the 360 brings the life to the party with its variety of multiplayer games……………
For the time being, I’m switching to becoming a 360 fanboy. Until Sony cleans up its act and shapes up the PS3, I could care less……..

Fagboys make me sick! And by the way no one cares about White Knight Chronicles. Try asking a Wii owner and see if they plan on buying a Playstation 3 due to that game…..I doubt it.
The PS3 needs to sell excellent games from now on. Good or decent games just won’t cut it. If Metal Gear Solid 4 couldn’t push PS3 sales then WHAT can???

Ivan can’t you see that Sony is going to lose this time??? It’s OVER for Sony! They had their time in the Sun with PS2 but now the Xbox 360 and Wii have surpassed it.
In the state of California there are less than 200 PS3 owner’s. Now that should say something right there!
I’ll admit Gears of War is shit, it always has been and always will be. I HATE THAT GAME!!! But 360 just has that unique fun factor that the PS3 does not.
Playing with the PS3 feels like conducting a science experiment. Mandatory installation, freeze ups, a worthless in game xmb, rgb/super white interfaces to enhance display, a large portion of retro PS3 games that do not support the Dual Shock 3,……..etc.
Wake up and smell the coffee Ivan, Sony lost. It’s inevitable.
You said it yourself “In the end PS3 will be on top….”. In the end??? What about now? Now is what counts.
In the end (7-10 years) Sony will still be trying to make profitable sales with the PS3 while Microsoft and Nintendo will be enjoying revenue with their future consoles.
