Gears of War 2:Street date broken or did pirates get a hold of a leaked build?

By Mike Ferro

Gears of War 2:Street date broken or did pirates get a hold of a leaked build? There is a rumor going around on the Web, indicating that the street date might have been broken for Gears of War 2. This is still speculation at this point, as there is no confirmation if the discs were even shipped to the retail stores yet. However, pictures of the game have surfaced on a number of sites showing the Xbox 360 Achievements and in-game pictures.

Several users on NeoGaf have revealed that they have in their possession, a working copy of Gears of War 2.  Some of the users have put up pictures showing various features in the game such as character selection for the multiplayer, in-game screenshots and actual disc with a time stamp.

It is quite hard to believe that users would have Gears of War 2 in their possession when it was just recently announced that the game has gone gold. The other explanation could be similar to that of what happened with Fallout 3. We reported yesterday that someone has leaked a build of Fallout 3 three weeks prior to its launch. This raises an interesting question, could some users have a leaked build of the game?

We definitely hope it is not another case of piracy on the Xbox 360 before the game has even released. As I mentioned yesterday, piracy is a growing problem in the home console industry and instances of early leaks of the game are worse.

We are curious what steps Microsoft plans to take with the recent string of high profile games that have been leaked/pirated before the street date. Microsoft has implemented Xbox Live account bans in the past, which is definitely a great deterrent for hardcore gamers bent on keeping their gamerscore.

We have reached out to Mark Rein, VP of EPIC Games, in regards to this incident. We will give you an update as soon as we find out more.

Um, just perhaps maybe some devs ought to do better controlling their employees? Pre release full game leaks are nobody’s fault but the developer. This has not much to do with piracy.

hahaha trannysurprise is going to be bookmarked by myself, such a great site!

Is leaking a pre-released game against the law? Or when the dude who did this gets caught, will he just get fired?

“Microsoft has implemented Xbox Live account bans in the past”

That was actually just a rumor. Microsoft officially stated that they would not take action again folks who got a hold of the games prior to their release date — but would go after stores selling the game prior to said day.

Even if this guy has it before release date, it doesn’t matter. Piracy has been around for years and years, it won’t be stopped. Even if downloading becomes illegal and everybody stops downloading (which no one will due to proxies and IP maskers), this just means they’ll rent the movies and games, and rip them through their own PC’s.

By the way, Far Cry 2 AND Fable 2 are now out to download for 360 as well.
