Xbox 360 to keep its momentum or will sales taper off?

October 13, 2008

Xbox 360 to keep its momentum or will sales taper off? Michael Pachter, famed Wedbush Morgan video game analyst, recently came out with his prediction ahead of the NPD figures. In his prediction, he places the Xbox 360 way ahead of the PS3. Pachter has been wrong on a few occasions in predicting who will come out on top between the Xbox 360 and the PS3. However, Pachter may have hit the nail on the head with his latest prediction.

According to Videogaming247, Pachter predicts that the NPD figures will show that the Xbox 360 will win in a landslide victory. He indicated that the Xbox 360 will outsell the PS3 for the month of September by as much as 125k units.

He states:

We estimate sell-through of 600,000 Wii, 300,000 Xbox 360 and 175,000 PS3 consoles. Our console sell-through forecasts reflect our belief that supplies for Wii hardware increased this month, as some portion of increased Wii production that started in July likely finally found its way to retail late in the month. Similarly, we believe that Xbox 360 demand increased after the September price cuts, with some market share gain likely over the PS3.

With Microsoft lowering the price of every Xbox 360 model available, it is most likely that the Xbox 360 will outsell the PS3 for the month of September. However, if that is not the case, then Microsoft may have bigger problems to worry about than the red ring of death issue. With the Arcade model currently selling at $200, the entry price point has been cut dramatically from $280.

However, it seems that the Arcade model might not be what is driving the sales. According to Amazon, the Xbox 360 Pro bundle is leading the charge ahead of the Elite and the Arcade, which is dead last. It seems that the consumers have figured it out, the Arcade is practically useless without a storage device.

Since it is likely that the Xbox 360 sold well last month, it is now a question of whether the Xbox 360 can keep its momentum into the holiday season. Historically speaking, the PS3 and the Xbox 360 have had surges in sales after a price cut. However, the sales spike usually die out within a month or two. With this in mind, I believe the Xbox 360 sales spike will drop the following month, but will pick up again, going into December. It looks like we will all just have to sit back and watch how it all unfolds during this holiday season.

    Michael Pachter should be fire this moron. That doesn’t have a life. He needs to go back to business school.

  2. SW:

    Bah who cares.

    They both have a big enuff install base to make certain ‘big titles’ sell by the boatload (e.g. GTA4).

  3. harry sachz:

    As much as I have a running joke about Pachter and his more miss than hit predictions, it doesn’t take a genius to predict that the 360 is going to win September, and more than likely October. I think he’s actually got September right for once.

    Ever since the Xbox’s price cut, I have been periodically checking Amazon just to see what would happen. It looked to me that the PS3 has been consistently selling more units (at least on Amazon) than the 360.

    And at this very moment Little Big Planet is at number 2, beating Fable and Gear… PS3 is at 11, while no model of the 360 is on the top 100. Am I reading there site the wrong way or what?

  7. phranctoast:

    @Barnabee.

    More than likely, the people that buy the 360 go to the stores to get it. Would you want the fragile 360 shipped through the mail to you????

  8. Bourne:

    Harry i sincirely hope you answer all of those questions to prevent these long comments

  9. Barnabee Jones:

    @phranctoast:

    No. You do have a good point. I wouldn’t buy any electronics through the mail. The only reason I brought it up, was because the article used Amazon as a reference. I don’t doubt that the 360’s sales are indeed up after the price cut. But Amazon isn’t showing that exactly.

  10. Arvis:

    *awkward cough*

    …..anyways, Harry, I’m inclined to agree with you that the 360 will win September. But I can’t see it outdoing the PS3 in October, considering the hype surrounding LittleBigPlanet. Just yesterday I got a Facebook message from a college buddy I haven’t talked to in over a year asking for my PSN ID so we can play LBP together. Alot of people are taking notice of this title, man, you can’t deny that.

  13. Wylie:

    Harry- why would you even answer Ivan on the dribble he wrote. It really brings you down to his level. And by the way the joke about running down his mothers leg is older than you are. You should really get some new material if you want to be a smart ass.

    The only reason Ivan keeps posting at you is because you post back at him. Try ignoring him, we will all be better off for it.

  14. Ivan_PSP:

    LMFAO, the obvious answer from a fanboy nice i knew you were not qualify to answer none of them. I just own you yo got stuck lol. Better luck next time…

  23. SW:

    So my question is this :)

    When is blorge going to enable user registrations AND anonymous posting (like it is now) that way you can stop all the ‘faking’ and keep the ‘passer-by’ posters you want :)

  24. Wylie:

    Good question SW. It’s sad what this has come to. I used to enjoy coming here. Now I feel like I’m visiting a junior high.

  25. Arvis:

    *looks around cautiously*

    This thread looks… emptier than I remember from just a few hours ago. Is it safe to come out?

    -Arvis

  26. SW:

    They trimmed the fat so to speak.

    Look at it this way, at least you’re keeping someone at Blorge busy and earning thier $$$ ;)

  27. harry sachz:

    Hahaha it seems like someone hijacked my username again overnight. Sounds like he/she pissed some people off too. Anyone remember what he/she said? Just out of curiosity.

  28. harry sachz:

    SW, i’ve been asking for that for a while now.

  29. harry sachz:

    @ Arvis,

    I said more than likely October as LBP is not getting released until the 23rd. But keeping in mind that Fable 2 is coming out on the same day.

  30. Mr Sparkle:

    @Harry Sachz

    Fable 2 looks really good but I can’t see it being much of a system seller. LBP on the other hand is constantly gaining momentum in appeal to both casual and hardcore with more and more exposure from the media.

  31. SW:

    I don’t know which will sell better tbh.

    I’m getting Fable 2 don’t get me wrong ;) but LBP is being hyped/marketted as a groundbreaking game. Fable 2 does have alot of cool stuff (heck yeah I’m making some swords for gold :D ) but doesn’t seem to be getting a whole bunch of hype and attention other than from 360 sites.

    Even so, I did enjoy fable (even if it did not deliver all they originally promised) and I am sure this game will be fun too. I just hope that ‘one button’ sword play is fun…

  32. maylon:

    LBP=Niche, nuff said.

  33. harry sachz:

    I’m looking forward to renting my wives out in Fable 2. I’ll be more gangster than Ivan.

  34. SW:

    lmao.

  35. phranctoast:

    “I’m looking forward to renting my wives out in Fable 2. I’ll be more gangster than Ivan.”

    You can do that in Saints Row 2 too!

    Oh wait…they’re not called wives.

  36. harry sachz:

    Awesome, that’s definitely going to be a rental for me.
