Sony and YouTube teams up to bring user created content to the PS3

October 14, 2008

Sony and YouTube teams up to bring user created content to the PS3Sony is partnering with YouTube to allow PS3 users to create and consume user-generated content. This announcement follows hot on the heels of yesterday’s news of an update to Firmware 2.50 and Flash player 9.

According to a press release, more than 50 Playstation exclusive videos will be available on the Playstation channel on YouTube starting today. Game developers for LittleBigPlanet have teased us about the ability to create user-generated videos on the fly and then upload them to YouTube directly.

Apparently the Playstation channel will tie directly with other components, such as the Playstation Blog and the Playstation forum. Users will be able to access the Playstation Channel on YouTube starting today here: www.youtube.com/playstation.

I believe this is a step in the right direction, to bring social games such as LittleBigPlanet to the next level. Users will now be able to watch user-created videos of their escapades through the Playstation channel. Amusingly, a few creative users have already started uploading creative videos of their masterpiece levels using a camcorder.

Yesterday, on the European Playstation forum, a community manager announced details on the upcoming Firmware 2.50. This update will have the in-game screenshot capture tool, which will further enhance the social gaming aspect of the PS3. The update will also bring Flash 9 support to the Internet browser.

Since Flash 9 is the latest version, this is great news, as users will now be able to watch almost all flash-based videos on the Web. However, one has to ask – what took Sony so long to bring us this update? Many PS3 owners have complained on the Playstation Blog, asking for Flash player 9. It seems like all of the right components are now in place; however, it’s now on Sony’s shoulders to bring it all together seamlessly.

Writer’s note:

I know many of you have been complaining about being impersonated in the comments section of Gamer.Blorge. This issue has been escalating and after careful evaluation we have decided to institute IP bans for users harassing other readers in the comments section. We hope this will elevate some of the issues and help Gamer.Blorge continue to be an enjoyable site to our loyal readers!

  1. SW:

Sounds good (esp. the ip banning).

I don’t see a photo tool on my ps3 tho after updating to 2.50.

I notice the ps store is broken tho, or down…

BTW, you can read our comments policy here:

I just noticed something on the PS blog!

“You now have the option to set the PS3 to turn off automatically after a background download or installation of content has completed.”

    HALLELUJAH!!!!!!!!

  4. Ivan_PSP:

Sweet i love how Google is destroying Microsoft. The best part is that Google and Sony have become great friends. Flash 9 is a dream come true. Hopefully soon Google will become a gaming developer exclusive to PlayStation.

IP bans finally thank you so much. I love this website.

  5. harry sachz:

About time the IP bans have come into place. However people with dynamic IP’s can get around that rather easily. A login system is definitely a better idea.

  6. Matt:

Interesting way to reach for the casual. I suppose its a logical step, though, considering all the extras on the PS3 (like BR) could already be aimed at the casual gamer.

I’m not sure LBP is the answer, though, and the casual gamers will need more than youtube and one game to sink hundreds upon hundreds of dollars into a game console, no matter how many youtube videos there are.

  7. harry sachz:

The fake phranctoast is going to be fist cab off the ‘Banned IP’ rank!

Although he does have 2 points. Youtube does indeed look like rubbish on a monitor, it may look like that on a big tv.

And Xbox 360 has been able to do the offline download thing for quite some time. Another case of one company copying another.

  8. harry sachz:

    FIRST cab, not fist cab….

  9. Matt:

Wonderful about the IP bans too. Guess we’ll know who is saying quite frankly disgusting things using other’s names, by the fact they will no longer be posting.

With this, and since this will no doubt bring the other Matt around, may I say against my first post on this blog was July 20, 2007, on this topic:

    http://gamer.blorge.com/2007/07/19/developer-slams-wiis-graphics-gamers-want-beautiful-games/

Please do cite a comment by you before that if you think you had the name first. Confusion is never fun.

  10. Bourne:

Hey this is more like it. You tube on my PS3 , awesome?! I’ve wanted to use my browser for more than just shops on MGO and others so this would be pretty cool. Now all i need is a cheap keyboard.

  11. phranctoast:

good look on the ip banning. Isn’t there another type of banning that involves info gathered from the network card. That way.. people with dynamic ip’s (like harry said) would have to buy a new network card each time banned?

  12. Bourne:

hey has anyone who i have added from here got COD4? because i fancy testing your skills on it, or for that matter has anyone got mgs4 and fancy an ass whooping?

  13. darkwhitehair:

    IM GETTING SOCOM TODAY!!!
    YAY!!!!

    Socom and Fifa 09

    and Dead Space probably…

so Illl play you guys in socom… gimme your PSn IDs… YAY!

  14. Wylie:

Bourne- I’m on COD4 a lot. Unfortunately we are hardly ever on at the same time. (I think you are 6 hours ahead of me) Maybe one of these weekends we will have to set up a time. I’ve got MSO as well, but I just don’t get into that online as much. Still can’t say why, just something about it.

  15. Wylie:

    darkwhitehair,

I did’t realize that Socom had come out. Did it release yesterday? If so I may have to go rent it and check it out.

  16. Bourne:

yeah i can now keep track of when you guys are online, on average its around 5 or 6 hours. If i c u guys online i’ll invite you in on a game. If anyones up for a challenge of mgo just message me (Anihil8 is my Kojima name, Anihal8r is my PSN).

  17. DavidB:

IP bans are a burdensome band-aid. All they will do is add administrative pain in the ass for Blorge admins. What’s so hard about a login system? People don’t HAVE to log in to comment if you set it up that way, but it can easily prevent people from posting using a established name (”We’re sorry, a registered user already uses that name, please choose another”), and posts from un-registered users get flagged as “unverified”.

As for this subject, I can already watch anything on YouTube via PlayOn UPnP, so as long as my PC is running it’s not a big deal. I find the PS3 browser to suck anyway, and rarely use it. It’s occasionally nice to sit back in the easy chair and surf on the big screen, but Ihave so little time these days I find I do it far less than I used to do. And what’s WITH the “browser” in “Life With Playstation”? Why does it not use the full resolution and forces me to side-to-side scroll to view web pages? Talk about lame…

  18. phranctoast:

psn ID is the same as user name. What time zone are you in (I’m in NY-eastern)? Don’t play MGO however but I’ll always play some COD4, and LBP comes out next week!!!!

  19. Bourne:

in in UK so GMT timezone for me, your about 5-6 hours behind? so as i type its 20 to 5 pm.

  20. CAD:

So is Ivan the culpret as I don’t see him here yet.

  21. CAD:

    So Bourne,

With the new update your saying that you can now see who is online and how long they have been online?

  22. SW:

Not sure if you can see how long they’ve been online. For sure you can see the last time they were online tho.

    @Bourne GMT is EST + 5.

Sucks when I read the photo thingy is only in supported games :(

  23. CAD:

Ok I Looked it up myself.

    http://arstechnica.com/journals/thumbs.ars/2008/10/15/ps3-firmware-live-little-touch-ups-welcome

So you now get to see when your friends are on and the systme has turn off features and controller turn off features. All features already on the 360 and the turn off feature was on the original Xbox. It’s funny how Sony never mentioned these things in their press release. Is this because it’s true that the PS3 is becoming a 360 with every update. I think so. Nobody copies more then Sony. The Youtube thing is cool though. There is one for originality.

  24. Bourne:

Cad, yes thats exactly what i was saying , go track Microsoft with your broken console or something.

  25. SW:

Yeah it really needs an RRoD update to truly become a 360 :D

Even so, the additions are welcome. I don’t really use the whole ’save battery life’ thing on my 360. I mean if I am going to be away from the machine I turn the fucking thing off, but you never know I suppose (it has happened once or twice ;) )

‘Turn off after active downloads’ is a feature I was dumbfounded wasn’t enabled when I first got a PS3.

  26. CAD:

    SW

    That was a good one.

  27. Arvis:

    CAD,

Remember all those annoying fanboys that yelled “OMG MS COPYCATS!” and “MII TOO!” when Avatars were revealed? Well, guess what: you’re one of those people.

Only a fanboy could spin improvement into a negative thing. Not to mention I’ve never once cared how long someone was online, nor do I mind leaving my PS3 on for long periods to download, since I know it won’t spontaneously break like some other consoles. Improvement is improvement and is good for everyone.

    -Arvis

  28. Wylie:

    SW,

Didn’t Sony try the RROD update with 2.40? They just pulled the plug on it a little early. It pisses me off that they pulled it, cuz I thought it would be so cool if my PS3 was just like a 360!

  29. Bourne:

overheating for the masses, whats better?! We could’ve tested Sony’s customer care and then boast how they send us a free console!!

  30. harry sachz:

    Phranctoast,

You mean the MAC address? I think that’s possible.

  31. Matt:

@ Matt…dude shut the hell up….change your god damn name….its not yours…i was commenting on here before you were….and even if i wasnt, you hardly did at all….

  32. SW:

Even MAC addresses can be spoofed harry. I’m not even sure if MAC addresses are transmitted with TCP/IP. Tad rusty on that one :(

Anyone else care to correct me :)

  33. harry sachz:

@SW, same, i’m no network specialist, so I wouldn’t have a 100% answer to that one.

So if MAC addresses can be spoofed, and IP addresses can, then the only option is a login system.

  34. Spideydog:

Oh cmon CAD….auto turn off feature is something that was invented by MS was it ??

Both consoles are just fine and will continue to make improvements.

Does the 360 have a “firmware” update ability like the ps3 ? (this is a serious question)

  35. John Pospisil:

Re user registration – we’re considering it.

  36. m83:

Actually My PS3 has played Youtueb vids since day 1. But their’s were alot of other vid types it would not play. As far as the user thingy. Im gonna download soon and see.

Usually I wait, and see if the updates have a few bugs. But Ill be running a second PS3 in a month or so “always online” for certain stuff. So “And that will be the older one.” So, I dont really care about anything they’ll fix if they have to anyways.

  37. CAD:

    Spidy

I never said Microsoft invented the auto turn off feature. I just simply said it’s a feature that is on 360 since day 1 and it was a feature in the original Xbox on day 1. Don’t put words in my mouth.

  38. CAD:

Arvis when the improvements on PS3 copy the 360 features you can always expect me to point it out. It’s not spinning it’s telling the truth about features that Sony neglected to mention in it’s press release.

  39. Wylie:

    Cad,

Sony never tells you everything in the press release that is included in a firmware update. Why, not sure, maybe they want people to play around with it a little. As far as this auto shutoff on the controller goes, who cares. It’s useless to me. I actually have fingers and a brain that tells them to push the PS button to shut down the controller. It’s awsome, you should try it.
