Xbox 360 head Greenberg mean spirited with Sony PS3?
Aaron Greenberg, group product manager for Xbox 360, strikes again by targeting the PS3 with some inflammatory comments. Just a few days ago, Greenberg, in a podcast, compared Blu-ray to UMD. He is at it again, this time attacking the PS3’s potential holiday sales.
According to Kotaku, Greenberg stated with confidence that the Xbox 360 will outsell the PS3 on a global scale this holiday. He said, “we feel confident that we’ll outsell the PS3 this holiday season in North America and in Europe. We’ll do it on a global scale.”
Greenberg also boasted that the Xbox 360 had a 42% increase in hardware sales month to month from August to September. He also, specifically points out that the PS3 had “flat sales” if you factor in the fact that the survey period in September consists of five weeks compared to four weeks in August.
Basically, he is trying to indicate that the PS3 experienced no sales gain despite a sales increase of roughly 53k. From his cockiness, you can tell Greenberg is a classy guy. Jack Tretton, head of Sony America, should take some notes from him. Tretton didn’t even gloat or even mention the Xbox 360 when the PS3 sold 400k during June. This was about double what the Xbox 360 sold during that month.
It is pretty clear what stance each company likes to play. Sony takes a laid back nonchalant stance while Microsoft takes an aggressive almost mean-spirited stance. Sony Worldwide Studios President Shuhei Yoshida said in an interview with GI.biz, that he likes to see the Xbox 360 succeed in Japan to support HD gaming.
Yoshida even complements the new Xbox 360 NXE and Avatars, stating that he prefers them over the Miis. It seems that Sony execs are on a completely different plane than Microsoft execs. I’m sure if Greenberg ever got in a fight with Tretton or Yoshida in a dark alley, Greenberg would win hands down.

The whole release the Xbox 360 despite having a 50% failure rate because screw the loyal fans lets beat Sony to the punch one year early mentality translate well throughout the company.

No, in the PS2 days Sony never ever mentioned the Xbox when gloating. They rarely had bad things to say about its competitors…
Peter Moore actually started bashing Sony and all the suits seem to follow by example.
Sony is cocky still, they boast that they are the largest video game manufacturer in the world all the time by lumping PSP,PS2, PS3 all together.
Sony just doesn’t seem as mean towards other competitors.

Sony is a sinking ship! PS3 is an outright mess, having to believe that even at high prices, people would buy because it’s a Playstation with a Blue-Ray!?! But where is backward compatibility?? Even though PS3 is the cheapest Blue-Ray player, it never did a translate to good sales, as because the standard DVD is still the cheapest and the best. And yes the battle is won between Blue-ray and HD-DVD but it turns out, consumers does not care about it! Well, that is until BR becomes cheaps, which i see coming in 5 years.

MS execs are just like 360 owners, childish tramps. Sony have been cocky in the past but not anywhere near as bad as MS. I guess MS is just a typical American company though. Because they’re American they must be great.
360 would never be worth it to me, even at £59.99 i wouldn’t buy that cheap tat. I like to buy things i dont have to send back 5 times. My friend bought an xbox and a cheap HDtv when i got my ps3 and 1080p Bravia, ye i spent over double what he did but a year and half later my console still works and my Bravia’s picture is as good as the day i got it. His xbox broke 8 months in and tv has dead pixels everywhere. He wishes now he got what i did. Proof that cheap is cheap for a reason.

Remember Sega vs Nintendo? The big people at Sega were very much against the agressive advertising in America, when they got an American to do it.
When Sega went ahead with it, Nintendo didn’t quite know how to act, either. That wasn’t the kind of advertising a Japanese company would even dream about!
It’s not good or bad, its just different. It could actually be good for MS, actually, if you look at how Sega turned the tides against Nintendo with this attitude and ate a huge hole into their market share.
It’s only bad if you judge a company by their ethics, but then you didn’t like MS anyway, and you should probably avoid playing the stock market.

Greenberg has every right to gloat. What he and his team have done is incredible. They have not only taken more market share from their major competitor, they have acquired a large % of former exclusives from their rival system. The majority of multiplatform games look better on the 360, and with well balanced and exciting exclusives which are currently out, or out on the next month or so, the 360 team at Microsoft have done a fantastic job.
Sony are not gloating because frankly, they have little to gloat about. Apart from some exclusives which do look pretty good, this ‘potential’ that everyone is talking about has not been met.
I do feel for them, as they have quite a conumdrum. They can lower the price of the PS3 to increase sales, but they’ll take a larger hit per unit sold, or they leave the pricing as is and continue falling behind.

I don’t think it’s right the way MS execs talk about the PS3. Ok, right now the Xbox 360 is above them, but they should be humble about it, they have done it through hard work for us gamers, but if someday things change and the PS3 gets over it then they won’t have where to hide and Sony could be as cocky or even more than MS, and they would deserve it.
As for Ivan_PSP, that guy is totally nuts… I saw some posts from him some weeks ago and I thought he had changed… looks like I was mistaken. And although I respect Sony for all what they have done for gaming with PSX and PS2, I think he is one of the reasons for which I would like to see the PS3 sink. Such way of thinking and bashing other formats and people should not be tolerated.

it seems like the trend in video game these days are “slim”. Slimming consoles down somehow boosts their sales. Same thing saved DS and PSP’s asses. Since the news keep saying a new ps3 chip is made, a slim version is not far away. probably June 2009.

My arguement:
Well, I have NO biased. I can see both sides of the argument clearly. Greenberg is right that the 360 will outsell the PS3 this holiday season, but that’s because of a huge price drop that officially makes the 360 the cheapest system on the market. With the economy the way it is, people are going to buy the cheapest system they can get their hands on.
However, he’s an idiot when he says that they’re not going to “force people to pay for something they don’t really want”. However, many people including many current owners will say that they are STILL waiting for 360 to add a bluray player! Obviously, it IS something that people want!
But is a bluray player that great? No, it really isn’t! Most of the people I know still own DVD players, because we have NO problem with our DVD’s. When is the last time you heard someone complain about the picture quality or sound quality of a standard DVD before the Bluray disc came out? None the less, most of us older people just finally replaced our whole VHS collection with DVD’s and we really don’t feel like going through the trouble of doing that again.
The only reason we switched to DVD’s had nothing to do with quality. It had to do with convenience. Didn’t you hate rewinding and fast forwarding those old VHS’s? You didn’t have to do that with a DVD, cause a DVD worked just like a CD. You could just skip to certain parts. Bluray doesn’t really do anything the DVD can’t, other then improve the quality that most of us are already fine with!
Digital media IS the next big thing… When it comes to music that is. Movies, however, I’m unsure about. I don’t think anybody likes the fact that you can’t download a movie and burn it to a portable device to watch on your TV or someone elses TV. With music you can, but movie companies have become so obsessed with stopping piracy (kinda like George Bush became so obsessed with stopping “terrorism”, something that’s been around since the beginning of time and can’t be stopped) that we’re forced to live with all these damn restrictions and digital media is the ULTIMATE restriction right now.
You know what I would pay for? Something that works like a DVD but doesn’t get scratched up so easily. Not digital media (i’ve already pointed out my argument there), but something that you can rent from a store without having to worry about how badly the last person scratched it up.

Unless you purposely scratch the disc they are fine. No comparison to DVD in that way. So i don’t get your post, its pointless.

It’s not that I hate the Xbox, but I hate there execs and there corporate douche baggery. This is a perfect example. I think it says a lot that a corporate exec has to result to trash talk. If he was so confident about the 360s momentum, he wouldn’t have to. The fact remains: Even thought the PS3 was a year late to the fight, and is more expensive they are well on there way to out pacing the 360s install base.

Hey Derrick, I’m not happy with the picture quality of standard DVD and if you had an HDTV neither would you. Been in a Best Buy lately? You can’t buy anything but HDTV’s so sooner than later everyone will have an HDTV (you do know analog is going away in 4 months right?). If you have a 40″ or larger set you will absolutely be unhappy with standard DVD. And if you’re not, you wasted the money on your flatscreen TV because unless you are watching native HD content you aren’t getting any benefit from that $2,000 TV to to mention that most non-HD content looks worse. In fact, w/o an HDTV you’d do better with a Wii. Why have a high-def system but not be able to play in anything but SD? Whether it’s a 360 or a PS3, they’re both a waste of $ w/o an HD display to play them on.
