Xbox 360: Fable 2 criticized for not living up to expectations

October 21, 2008

Xbox 360: Fable 2 criticized for not living up expectations Fable 2 is one of this years most anticipated action adventure game. With that being said, this game has a lot to live up to, given the amount of hype it has received. One of the criticisms that the original Fable received was that it failed to live up to consumer expectations. However, it seems that Fable 2 may be experiencing the same types of criticisms that the original game faced.

Peter Molyneux, the man behind Fable 2, in an interview talked up how revolutionarily the co-op would be in Fable 2. However, according to a barrage of angry posters on the official Fable 2 forum, many of the fans are disappointment with the co-op mode currently in the game.

Fans voiced their disappointments in the forum after finding out that the game would not ship with co-op in place. However, Lionhead Studios quickly released a patch on the same day Fable 2 launched quelling many of the fanboy cries.

Despite Lionhead Studio’s efforts to satisfy the first day purchasers, fans were not at all pleased with the co-op patch. Most gamers are calling the co-op mode “broken.” Apparently the co-op mode does not let you transfer your fully realized character into a friends game but places you into the shoes of a NPC. Basically, you literally take over your friend’s henchman, with no traits or characteristics you might have added to your character.

On top of that, any extra items found during co-op cannot be transferred back into your game. However, any gold and experience does get added back to your stats. It does seem a bit lopsided that you cannot bring your weapons, armor and inventory into co-op but you can bring back exp and gold.

This is what one poster had to say about the patch:

Hey guys, thanks for the quick fix for the online multi co op. you know just taking a dump and selling it as a cool feature is kinda lame. the co op sucks hard in this game. you cant be your own character. and you cant freaken see anything because of the crappy (and I mean super crappy) camera.
So, thanks for all the waiting for this cool game with this awesome feature. i hate to tell you but it blows……I dont accept your patch. take it back and give us what you promised. not some cheap knock off.

Personally it really doesn’t seem like a deal breaker, however many on the official Fable 2 forum seems to disagree. Many have indicated that they will return the game if the issues are not fixed. It seems that many people have the impression Fable 2 would have MMORPG elements – now where would they get such an idea?

The game looks beautiful with excellent voice acting. The story plot is intricately interwoven with the side quests making them feel less like a chore and part of the core gameplay. However, until we release the review for the game I can’t really comment too much on the other elements of the game. Make sure to keep an eye out for our review.

  1. SW:

    Not interested in multiplayer.

    But.

The game is way too short (SP campaign), the minigames are crap, and some of the ‘help’ notifications are freaking annoying.

  2. harry sachz:

Don’t care, still getting it. Eurogamer gave it 10/10, so it can’t be THAT bad.

  3. SW:

Well I never said it was bad or anything. Its fun playing realestate :) and the fighting is good.

But again, I guess Pete over hyped it ;)

  4. darkwhitehair:

    DAMMIT HARRY!!
I wanna see your profile… make one quick…

also… I think people were expecting Oblivion… Fable 2 is more tongue-in-cheek… but still.. its awesome (according to the reviews and the podcasts)… i would love to have it on the Ps3…

    DAMN YOU MOLYNOOOOOO

*I didnt know how to spell his name*

  5. Bourne:

Hey er was it me or did you have to log into here to post a comment yesterday?

  6. Bourne:

I guess Fable joins a long line of games which suffer from overhype, namely Haze.

  7. harry sachz:

    @ Bourne,

Fable 2 is HARDLY in the same bucket as Haze. Man you can come up with some wacky shit sometimes….

  8. Bourne:

Hairy, i obviously know the gameplay is different. I was referring to the hype surrounding the games.

  9. harry sachz:

    @ Bourne,

Haze was a colossal failure, Fable 2 received a couple of 10/10′s and quite a few 90+ scores. That is absolutely nothing like Haze.

  10. SonyFanGod:

This game looks boring and generic the 1st one was a big let down.

  11. Bourne:

Jeez, Hairy i wasn’t comparing the two games LIKE FOR LIKE. It was a vague comparison.

  12. Royzy:

I see where you are coming from Bourne with the hype thing, but I think it is a bit harsh. I don’t want to even think about Haze.

The atmosphere on the Blorge has calmed down loads, it is almost….nice.

  13. Bourne:

Im guessing Royzy your on the east seaboard in the USA? You signed in at around 5AM here which works out at around 11-12pm there. You, Arvis and Wylie could have a game of COD or something. Unfortunatly i.m 5-6 hours ahead.

OK ok so the Haze thing was harsh, but i’d still like to play both…perhaps less fable 2…

  14. phranctoast:

Like SOCOM:C, Fable 2 has to still gets it’s shit together. To me it seems like they rushed to get things done without having all bugs/aspects of the games in question squared away.

The game is still getting pretty rave reviews though……

  15. Barnabee Jones:

I picked this up yesterday as a gift for a family member. Most reviews game the game great scores, but did mention that the co-op had problems. But like you said, it’s not really a deal breaker. You can’t make every one happy all of the time I guess. If it shipped with out cop-op people were going to be pissed – or ship the game with cop-op and people will be pissed because it wasn’t what they expected.

  16. Rin:

Fable 2 is fine, it’s not mind-blowing, nor did I expect it to be. As for hype, what hype? I don’t think it was that far off from the hype it received…

And hey, there are no Qu’ran excerpts to hold back it’s release date at least :P Can’t wait til next week though, hope the LBP is as good as the reviews say it is.

  17. LittleBigFanboy:

do i smell two failed exclusives in one year by M$= Too Human and Fable 2

Then we come 2 ps3 MGS4=10/10 LBP=10/10 mabye Gears 2 might save Xbox’s year or maybe the fact it might aswell b in the bargain bucket

  18. phranctoast:

I’m still pretty sure its metareview is around 90%. That’s far from failed exclusive.

They also still have Left 4 Dead which while only “console” exclusive still looks pretty cool.

  19. Royzy:

Bourne – I live on the south-west coast (Cornwall), UK. I was eating my lunch! Yummy.

  20. SW:

    @Rin

To be fair no outlet really hyped it (they were probably burned after fable 1), but if you ever watched the interviews with Peter M. some of the stuff he talks about just isn’t as good as he makes it out to be.

The dog was fun, but not really ground breaking. The ‘finve levels of minigames!’ are all identical except the white dot moves faster and insanely boring (I find its great to pull pints when you’re REALLY tired and just staring at your TV).

The menus are sluggish as hell, and god forbid you want to drink TWO potions!!!! You have to enter the menu, goto items, then potions, and then do it all again for the second potion. Doesn’t effect food or meds, but buy a shit load of XP potions and its a pain in the ass.

But like I said earlier. The game is fun, I like buying realestate (altho i wish the furnishing part was better) and the fighting is good too (which is what you do half the time ;) ) and when I get home today ill have a huge bundle of cash from last nites property splurge :P

  21. Martin:

    Yikes!

Two of the big three gave Fable 2 8s out of 10.
    IGN —- 8.8/10
    Gamespot 8.5/10
Official Xbox Mag. UK – 8.0/10

    Avg. score on metacritic 8.9/100
Metacritic score can only go down from here on out.. so it looks like Fable 2 is a solid 8.

  22. Bourne:

ahhh right, i ought to sort out who lives where.

  23. GameFRK:

This game is great, I don’t care what anybody else says about it.

It has awesome gameplay and the co-op isn’t that bad. So far I spend 10+ hours on this game and so far I really enjoy it, great game.

  24. darkwhitehair:

WHY THE HELL IS Haze and Lair still $60 ???

Dont the retailers know the suck ass??

Id like to buy them and put em in my Wall Of Shame… but not for $60.. for more like $10… or like 0…

  25. SW:

“Metacritic score can only go down from here on out.. so it looks like Fable 2 is a solid 8.”

And thats exactly what is it :) (at least in my opinion ;) )

    A solid 8.X game.

  26. Mr Sparkle:

Played a bit of this round my mates ,A good game, vast improvement over Fable 1. Alot of good parts like combat but alot of the mini games where rubbish as was co-op and the story is incredibly short for an RPG. A dissapointment, but probably only because molyneux? erm.. Pete wouldn’t shut up about the game being brilliant.

  27. Wylie:

    darkwhitehair,

Just wait until they decide to bury them in a hole next to the E.T. game for Atari. Then you can go dig them up and get all three for your wall of shame for free.

  28. Mike Ferro:

    Hey guys,
Just a heads up we are beta testing the user login registration feature. We are actively looking at to determine its viability. I’ll talk a little more about it later on.

  29. SW:

Pete needs to get on and remake Syndicate ;)

  30. Matt:

Fabel 2 sux bcuz its on the 360. PS3 rulez!

Nah, just kidding. Reasonable Matt got the Matt username. I love the registration. I assume that’s why the site was down earlier today. It’s certainly the best way to stop username theft, though I voted against it in the poll a while back, before people posting under other names was a problem.

I look forward to trying the game, but hype was so unexistant on this one, I don’t know much about it. That will probably be good when I do get to give it a try, though.

It sounds like the co-op was rushed. It would have been better, it seems to delay it and fully flesh out the co-op, as opposed to releasing it as a patch. A a delay is only for a while, but a bad game (or mode, in this case) is forever. It should have been on the disc, from release. Sony delayed LBP for less to make sure as many people as possible were happy.

People may have expected too much from Fable, but Fable 2 only needed to do what Fable failed to do to satisfy most fans. Not having played it, and knowing very little about it, I cannot say if people are upset over multiplayer because its an easy excuse when Fable 2 still didn’t live up to the Fable hype, or if its a vocal minority that think games made for a single player experience still need some awesome multiplayer.

Even if the co-op is bad, and I fully believe it is, and I fully believe there should have been some delay to make it good and part of the game, not a seemingly rushed patch after, Fable always was meant to be a playground for a single person, and that is how it should be judged.

Bought it this morning, having a ball!

By the way, singlemuslim.com is an absolute rip off! They want to charge me $60 a month to read messages! Sorry Ivan, you’re on your own, pal.

  33. Ivan_PSP:

Fable 2 is not gonna help Xbox 360 and all Xbox got left is Gears of War 2 to fight against an ARMY of exclusives.

  34. harry sachz:

Did the funniest thing on Fable 2 last night. Not sure if anyone has got this far in the game but….

During the funeral for the head monk guy, I decided to stand on the grave and do a dance! Then (while still standing on the grave) I pointed at his daughter and started laughing. Then I played fetch with the dog.

I was laughing so hard that I began to cry.

    This game is so tits!

  35. Arvis:

    Reasonable Matt,

Glad to see you’re using the moniker I so graciously bestowed on you! :D
Sadly, the login system will probably make it unnecessary. *sigh*

@ Harry: ………..ok, yeah, that actually sounds pretty funny. I smirked, despite myself. ;)

    -Arvis

  36. SW:

    Rofl Harry.

I’m already done with the game. Not %100 for sure but the only property I don’t own is the castle, but I bring in about 16k every 5 mins so ill get that soon enuff.

I’m out of quests too cept the statue one which I can’t find the last pedestal. Oh and also have to do the silver keys and gargoyles! Gargoyles are fun tho :D just wait for a funny scottish voice to start insulting you lol and you know one is near ;)
