Resistance 2 beta hands-on: 60 player competitive

October 24, 2008

Resistance 2 beta hands-on: 60 player competitive Previously, I talked about the co-op portion of Resistance 2, today I will be talking a little more about the competitive mode. When Ted Price, head of Insomniac Games, first announced that Resistance 2 online would support up to 60 players many were shocked and wondered what kind of chaos would ensue from so many players playing at once.

Competitive Multiplayer

Insomniac Games managed to develop the right scenarios to keep those 60 player battles from becoming too chaotic. The competitive multiplayer consists of several different modes: deathmatch, team deathmatch, core control and skirmish.

Most of the other modes are your usual multiplayer types, except skirmish. Skirmish is the only mode where you can have up to 60 players along with mission based objectives. I would say that the skirmish mode is the meat of the multiplayer game.

During a skirmish match the game will give you an objective, like secure a beacon. The 60 player multiplayer game will be divided into two teams of 30 and each team will be divided into smaller squads. Each squad will have their own specific objective that will be critical to the success of the overall 30 member team’s success.

Once your squad completes their objective, the mission objective will change to something else. It will force your squad to move to a completely different part of the huge 60 player map. With objectives jumping from location to location the gameplay changes as you will have to adapt to a different environment just as you were getting comfortable with your current location.

After so many objectives have been complete, the game will bring all the squads back together into a 30 man army to battle it out with the other team. During the full out 60 player battle it may feel a bit chaotic at first, but it will also make you realize how epic the battle is.

You say Perks, I say Berserks

Similar to the perks in Call of Duty 4 (COD4), Resistance 2 has what is called Berserks. Some of you may remember that Resistance 1 which was out before COD4, also had berserks in a basic form. You only start out with a few Berserks but as you level up, more will be unlocked. You can choose the desired Berserk during loadout in-between re-spawns.

However, unlike Perks you can only pick one type of Berserks. Also, unlike Perks, Berserks can give you a huge advantage but only for a short period of time. Once in a game, you cannot access your Berserk right away, you must fill up your Berserk meter by gaining experience points.

Since you can only pick one Berserk at a time, you can easily create an impenetrable force by working together with another team mate. For example if you have the ring of life (replenishes life around you) coupled with someone with a force field and prototype ammo (deal extra 25% damage), together you could become the ultimate killing machine.

That pretty much wraps it up for our Resistance 2 beta hands-on preview. Make sure to keep an eye out for our review of the game sometime in November.

    I can’t wait for 30 a side.
Although the controlled chaos seems ok, i would sure love to just go hell crazy and have 30 vs 30 deathmatch.

@ Mike: are the new menu’s/icons on the multiplayer simple to figure out? They look a bit confusing, but i’m guessing you get used to them and what they do?

Bourne, we should try and fight the grain, arrange all 60 to meet behind a statue or something.
