Analysis: PS3 selling more games than Xbox 360 with smaller install base

October 26, 2008

Analysis: PS3 selling more games than Xbox 360 with smaller install base The PS3 is rapidly becoming the bread-winner for many of the third party publishers. We wrote a story a few months ago where according to EA’s financial report the PS3 was the clear bread-winner over the Xbox 360 and the Wii. Now it seems that Konami, Namco Bandai and Ubisoft have joined the ranks of EA where the PS3 console is bringing in more money than the Xbox 360.

EA

In our previous story, we talked about how the PS3 is EA’s new bread-winner in terms of bringing home the bacon. According to EA’s previous financial statement, the PS3 accounted for about 17% of total revenue in comparison to the Xbox 360′s 10%. That is quite significant when considering that EA is the largest third party video game publisher in the world.

Namco Bandai

Namco Bandai is the largest third party publisher in Japan. According to the publisher’s recent financial statement, the PS3 currently moved approximately 57% more software than it’s direct competitor, the Xbox 360. Namco Bandai is sort of the EA of Japan, considering the amount of revenue it generates from software.

Konami

Konami is one of the top three publishers in Japan in terms of revenue. With the recent release of Metal Gear Solid 4, it is not all that surprising that the PS3 would have a larger piece of the pie. However, according to Konami’s recent financial statements, the PS3 accounted for a whopping 57.3% of the sales this past quarter, while the Xbox 360 accounted for only 2.6%. This changed from last year, when the Xbox 360 brought in more sales compared to the PS3.

UbiSoft

UbiSoft is considered to be one of the top three publishers in all of Europe. According to UbiSoft’s half year financial report (6 months 2008/09), the PS3 accounted for about 20% of the software sales compared to the Xbox 360′s 14%. Considering UbiSoft’s presence in Europe, this is quite a significant turn of event.

Wrap-up

It’s mind blowing that not only is the PS3 competing toe-to-toe with the Xbox 360, it is out performing the later in many of the instances. Considering that the Xbox 360 has a larger install base by 5 million, it looks like the PS3 is performing more efficiently  in terms of sales for third party publishers.

Since 2005, when the Xbox 360 first launched with no competition, it seems that the PS3 has been steadily climbing in terms of the software sales. This pretty much means that the PS3 has been taking more and more potential Xbox 360 sales as time goes by. The future for the PS3 looks bright and healthy, however  if the current trend continues the Xbox 360 might find itself struggling to compete in the market.

  1. idiot:

no matter what… the ps3 needs to drop its price in order to compete with the 360 in hardware sales…

if not, than the ps3 can kiss its lead in 3rd party software goodbye

  2. harry sachz:

Spin it Michael!!! Spin it!!!! There’s a job waiting for you in the Sony PR department!!

  3. DaBot:

    Well you can’t pirate Blu-Ray games/movies, yet.

  4. Bourne:

Good article, yet this won’t really benefit us gamers. Even if more money is being made on the PS3 by devs they still wont make more exclusives because its not exactly hard to port games and make them multiplat, it may just mean PS3 games get more DLC exclusive content. Dev can’t afford to just miss one console out because their games are selling slightly better on one console.

  5. mowgli2k:

This is a really fascinating article – when I read about the EA financials a while ago, I frankly assumed it was an error somewhere along the line but to have it confirmed by some other major players means it must be true. But how? We know that although PS3 has been playing catch up for some time around the world, in general 360 is still some way ahead. We also know that MS have long lauded their attach rate as better than everyone elses – therefore, there can only be one conclusion that I can see and this is that there are less 360 owners out there than normally considered. Presumably because the RROD has been so bad that many many people have bought more than one 360 – I wonder then whether 360 is in a lot more trouble than otherwise thought. It’s weird, really. I’m not trying to start a flamewar here but would be interested in some thoughts on this !

  6. Tatsujin:

Charts are speaking. Facts are being laid out. Nothing more needs to be said. PS3 is gaining grounds. =)

  7. down311:

I call complete BS on this article. There is a study by Gamasutra showing PS3 selling games at a 5.1 game to console attach rate so far this year. 360 went from 7.1 games sold per console last year to 8.1 this year ( that is astonishing ! ). Even the Wii is beating PS3 with 5.5.

Ubisoft had HAZE as an exlusive for PS3 ( 5.5 out of 10 game reviews I might add ) and it sold pretty well since theres not much else at the time. Other then that Ubisoft had Rainbow Six 2 on both consoles.

MGS4 was obviously why Konami sold more on PS3. You forgot to mention that MGS4 may be on it’s way to 360. That would sell more on 360 then it’s 3.4 millin on PS3.

These numbers mean nothing, game attach rate is where the bread and butter is.

Your article on Fable is way off too, you are all one sided unfortunately. Fable II’s reviews say it’s beyond expectations in most way’s. Show me one credible bad review that gave it less then 85%.

  8. Dirk:

    @down311,

spoken like a true fanboy, jeeze man… why would anyone mention a rumor about MGS4 for Xbox 360? Thats like mentioning Gears 3 heading for PS3.. Im sure you have something idiotic to respond to that.

Namco didn’t have any exclusives or what not yet they are selling more software on the PS3.

Your a true fanboy, twisting things to make your argument work, where the hell did you see that Haze sold well? Sure you made it up.

Haze sold piss poor, sold less than half a mil, certainly not enough to make a huge impact to UbiSoft’s sales 20% vs 14%.

No credible reviews less than 85%?? LOL!
The Offical Xbox Magazine UK gave Fable II – 8.0/10

    Giant Bomb gave it 8.0/10
    Game Daily gave it 78/10

    @down311

You need to get your facts straight. MGS IV is not coming to the 360. Get it straight in your head. Microsoft wants it to be on the 360 so badly and they claim “it has the horsepower to run MGS IV–” Bullshit. GAMEPLAY please, GAMEPLAY. Another thing you utterly didn’t research is the fact that MGS IV was created specifically for the PS3′s hardware and it was mentioned during the first patch of installation in MGS IV … Any MGS IV person who played the game can confirm these words. Another fact, and to take a strong jab at your 360′s limited capacity, there was an event between Snake and that Otaku guy making fun of the “You need to switch discs” and realized “Oh hey, Blu-ray can handle it on a single disc”. With EACH character ranging over 500,000 polygons ON the platform in complete CG realistic-game play (none of your UEngine3 crap), pure physics enviorment, collision, sound, and the many AI units thats across the battlefield all doing different things in parallel on large-scale battlefields .. Do you honestly think 360′s hardware can even do that? Because I have not seen ONE game that can push this far on the 360. Enough said, search the Internet and look at the fact numbers between the 360′s horsepowers and CELL.

On another note, expect these sales to raise even more in Q4 of 2008 and Q1 of 2009 for the PS3 platform.

Kojima and KONAMI stated it is a PS3 exclusive, because someone in KONAMI said they’re seeing to see MGS IV coming to the 360 everyone got hyped? Guess what, 1 week after that idiots statement KONAMI came out and shot it down saying it will not be going to the 360. Do you want Kojima to come out and shoot your hopes down again? BS is right.

Mike you are a fool. I thought Dave was good at spinning but wow have you spun this into a complete lie. Frist, I had no idea you were Chinese. I cannot read the Bndai Namco statements but it seem to be about 1 game Ace combat 6. 1 game Mike give me a break. Konami: Is based on DDDR, Pro Eveloution Soccer and Baseball. Metal Gear Solid was a PS3 Exclusive to PS3 and the relults are from April to June for bothe 07 and 08. Those games are not even popular on the 360. As for Ubisoft, Assisans Creed was not that good of a game. 360 people are not that much into stealth games plus it got all sorts of mixed reviews. EA I have no clue. But what I do know is when I look at my libary, of the 20 + game I have 4-5 are EA. The 360 Library is much more vast and expansive giving you variety something PS3 is trying to catch up on if they can get games out of development. So sure EA will sell more on the PS3 as the offerings are much more slimmer to pick from. The 360 Library trumps the PS3 Library big time and the attack rate on 360 is 8.1 and PS3 is 5.1. Also I hate the 1 year lead crap because 360 never really did good in it’s first year so lets just drop that.

  12. down311:

    Spoken facts !!!

    http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=20713

Namco doesn’t have one game that broke 1 million in sales on either console. Namco makes their money selling their old school games over PSN and Live.

Any new game that sells over 300,000 is considered a pretty good success.

Read 1up, IGN and Game Informer. Cricket and Soccer are popular in the UK, nuff said.

3rd parties have to compete with a better exclusive lineup on 360 as well. I own both and i’m just telling it like it is.

  13. Tatsujin:

I think the new Naruto will sell over 1 million copies, and roughtly will hit 3 million worldwide. Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm. Look at the gameplay if you haven’t, because that alone separates itself from any Naruto game and any fighting game out there.

“down311″ you are an utter f*cking cretin. That Gamasutra article is about attach rates in the United States, we’re talking in worldwide numbers here.

  16. nOraK:

Have you guys ever heard about piracy?
PS3 is the only next-gen console that hasn’t yet been hacked and these numbers, at least IMHO, reflect excatly this situation!
I wonder when it’ll be hacked if software revenues will still grow… for sure we’ll se a boost on hardware sales!

  18. down311:

All it say’s is that Sony doesn’t have enough exlusives, so people have to go somewhere else.

As for MGS4…Straight from Konami’s PR guy that they are looking into bringing MGS4 to 360.

    http://www.gamefocus.ca/?nav=new&nid=2767

Why only sell 3 million when you can sell another 5 million on 360.

MGS4 is only in 720p and the Cell needs blu ray cuz its not a game processor. 360 cuts disc space in half right there. No fabricated, artificial lighting and textures need to be added for 360 like PS3, theres another 8 gigs free. No pre-install gives another 7 gigs. You wouldn’t have to create a code menu for each individual level so theres I don’t even know how many, maybe 11 – 15 gigs.

360 has some serious juice left and could do MGS4 no problem.

PS3 needs blu ray because it’s a crutch for how poorly the Cell really process games.

Honestly, I don’t even think MGS4 is all that great. I had to sit through almost 2 hours of cut scenes, some were entertaining but you can skip them. MGS online is a pretty big mess although they are working on it, it’s not much to talk about. It was a beautiful game but Drakes Fortune is way better.

MGS4 isn’t even selling in bargain bins anymore. PS3′s biggest game lasted a month.

  19. SW:

@norak – Whilst the Piracy arguement is valid as it will have some impact, we can’t really say how much affect it really has.

You think pirates are going to answer a survey from MS asking ‘do you have any pirate games on your 360?’ I don’t ;)

    @ Everyone else!

Ignore Down311. Either rabid moron brainless fanboy. Or Troll :). With the crazy space computations in his previous post, I am betting troll!

  20. Johnny Ninja:

I just hope that these developers realize this and start giving the PS3 the love it truly deserves. Most of these developers release all multiple form titles, so I am not sure that we will see more exclusives. Hopefully we will start seeing the PS3 being the lead platform for these developers.

  21. Bourne:

    down 311 lmao gtfo

  22. Johnny Ninja:

    @Down411

PS3 doesn’t have enough exclusives? Spoken like a true Xbot! They have more exclusives this holiday season than any other console on the market.

Also for reference: Warhawk, Heavenly Sword, Ratchet and Clank, TG5: Prologue, Uncharted, MGS 4, MotorStorm 1 & 2, Little Big Planet, Resistance 1 & 2, Wipe Out HD, etc, etc… and the list goes on. Meanwhile you can boast Gaylo, Fable and Gears… Sorry, but I am not exactly jealous.

  23. Murcie_LP640:

    down311:

All of those things you mentioned that apparently the X360 “wouldn’t need” to run MGS4 would actually be needed if it wanted to have a shot at the PS3 version and get some sales. Therefore, I don’t think you are as smart as you seem to think you are. I mean, I own both an X360 and a PS3 and I’m certainly game enough to say that the 360 wouldn’t be able to handle most of the exclusives M$ stole from Sony without some serious downgrading. It’s not “SuperConsole”, and it’s definitely not as powerful as the PS3, no matter what you seem to think or where the f*** you get these ideas from…I’m sorry but that’s just the way it is. Oh and before you ask yes I am a Sony fanboy, cause the PS consoles have given me a much better gaming experience than Xbox. I simply own an X360 for the exclusives (or at least that was until I found out there wasn’t very many decent ones…)

  24. Spideydog:

“The 360 Library trumps the PS3 Library big time and the attack rate on 360 is 8.1 and PS3 is 5.1. Also I hate the 1 year lead crap because 360 never really did good in it’s first year so lets just drop that”

OMG CAD…. you have come up with the goods this time my friend.

You flog the crap out of the PS3 for its poor first year, but yet admit the 360 had a piss poor first year as well….and you tell us not to use that argument ?? To top it off you go an about the 360 magnifico library …. Who gives a shit even if that were true. PS3 has more games than I can afford to get anyways…I’m very happy with the game selection, especially with the coming Christmas gaming releases. Your using the same lame xbot flogging a dead horse argument that you don’t like us apparently using.

  25. harry sachz:

    My word, SOCOM sucked.

All I know is that the 360 exclusives this christmas (Fable 2, Left 4 Dead, Gears 2) are a lot more appealing to me than the PS3 exclusives (LBP, Resistance 2). Although Resistance 2 looks like my type of game.

I am happy with my console of choice and am glad I chose it over the other one.

  26. pilotj25:

It accounted for more revenue because all of the game development costs are associated with the Xbox 360 titles. The PS3 then gets bad ports of these games that were developed on the 360, like Assassins Creed//. This story is just another flame story with no actual substance.

But thanks for giving this moron his 15 minutes of fame and fueling this. I know it’s hypocratic of me to say. Cheers.

  27. Ivan_PSP:

    harry sachz:
SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation is great play it first don’t comment if you haven’t play it first. Stop basing your hate on online review or comments misleading you.

  28. Tatsujin:

SOCOM is a great game. They missed on things, but I’ve enjoyed playing it and for 40 US dollars, it is damn worth it.

  29. Arvis:

    Harry,

“I am happy with my console of choice and am glad I chose it over the other one.”
If this is true, more power to you, brother. It’s nice to get some enjoyment from your hard-earned dollar. However, you should be a little more fair to the PS3s line-up of exclusives. There’s ALOT more than just those two games. You’ve gotta admit, if you’d ended up with a PS3 somehow, you wouldn’t be hard-up for entertainment this winter. I know if I had a 360 I’d be rockin’ Fable and Lost Odyssey. :)

    -Arvis

  30. harry sachz:

    Arvis,

Those two I chose were the only two that came to mind that are being released before Christmas. Were there any I missed?

I’ve been having fun with Fable. My wife was pissing me off, so I bludgeoned her with a mace. At least now I can get some $$$ renting out the trailer I had her living in. However, I couldn’t have any witnesses, so I ended up killing all the gypsys in that little trailer park village thing that I put my wife in. For some reason my character now has red eyes and an evil grin on his face, go figure….

  31. Dirk:

Wow, this story exploded on N4G, NeoGaf and Maxconsoles!
It has like 330 comments on the other sites..
    Good read.

  32. Rhino:

Harry u nob, Left 4 Dead is not x360 exclusive, I’m waiting for it to be released on steam. As for u CAD you’re a nob as well, using the “hate the 1 year lead crap because 360 never really did good in it’s first year” Way to shoot yourself in the foot there cowboy. So PS3 fans shouldn’t say anything about the lousy 1st year, but is ok for x360 fans to use the argument? Let me know how the surgery goes to get the splinters out of your ass from sitting on the fence.

  33. kev:

i guess when all else fails, LIE…

this bozo used 3 publishers as base that the ps3 is selling more software..

completely ignoring 1. the higher userbase of the 360 than the ps3 and 2. the muuuuch higher attach ratio of the 360 over the ps3.

    so in conclusion;
    1. the 360 is PROVING to be selling more software
    2. the author is a raging fanboy who uses skewed and edited data to try to raise a point
    3. things must be looking worse for the ps3 than most thought for people to make up lies to try to make it look better.

I’m really shocked at Mike. This type of hack journalism is usually DaveP’s type of thing….

oh well…. i guess stupidity is contagious at this site… as proven by Bourne, Ivan PSP and spideydog….

keep the laughs coming fanboys… the ps3 is falling farther behind everyday….

  34. kev:

Please change the name of this site to SonyPS3.Blorge.

this way people will be more easily to tell your articles are skewed fanboy rantings and not a source of credible information.

    Thanks.

  35. Arvis:

    Kev,

Wow. You really pwned Mike hard, didn’t you? Oh wait, no, you just wasted your time and ours with your usual muscle-headed and pathetically pointless strongarm drivel that you believe other people actually take seriously.

Pretending like what you believe is true doesn’t mean it is.

    -Arvis

  36. kev:

arvis – and in true form, you ignore the FACTS i posted and attacked the poster.

maybe if the ps3 was as good as you say it is you could stay on point…but alas…

someday when you learn what a fact is, you can create a coherent post…. still waiting tho…

face it; mike lied. he has no base of reality for what he wrote and is based in fantasy where he comes up with the rest of his pro-ps3 b.s…

  37. harry sachz:

Rhino, it’s a console exclusive. I was comparing 360 with PS3, if you read my post you might have figured that part out yourself, you dickhead.
