Might not need Left 4 Dead with Call of Duty 5 zombie mode

October 27, 2008

Still need Left 4 Dead with Call of Duty 5 zombie mode? Zombies seem to be the latest craze these days. Co-op centric game, Left 4 Dead is all about zombies. There is even a zombie mode for Grand Theft Auto IV. Apparently, Call of Duty: World at War will now have a special zombie gameplay mode as well.

At first you might brush off the notion of a zombie mode in Call of Duty: World at War (COD5) as just a small basic mode. However, once you delve into the details, the zombie mode seems like it could actually be a separate game in itself.

The Nazi zombie gameplay in COD5 seems whole enough to actually compete with other full fledged zombie games, like Left 4 Dead (L4D). Of course I am jesting a bit here, considering that Left 4 Dead offers so much more than any single mode could. Despite being pretty much a multiplayer/online game, L4D offers a decent AI, so you could even play through the game with bots.

Also, even though the story/plot in L4D might be paper thin (like Unreal Tournament III), the different maps and player selection definitely makes up for it. L4D even lets you spawn into an ongoing game as a zombie boss! How awesome is that?

Getting back to COD5, the Nazi zombie game is quite robust with its own economy and currency to progress the gameplay. The mode is similar to the Gears of War 2 Horde mode, where you fight off waves of enemies. There are so many more facets to the gameplay than just fighting wave after wave.

The Nazi zombie gameplay supports up to four co-op players, just like L4D. Team work is crucial during the zombie game. You have to be able to communicate to your teammates effectively, such as what area you are going to cover.

You will accrue points depending on how many zombies you kill. These points are vital to the zombie game as it allows you to upgrade existing weapons as well as purchase new and more powerful weapons. You can also use the points to move debris around, such as couches for an effective strategy.

Another vital economic factor is the barricade. As waves of zombies start tearing down the barricades, you will need to expend points to rebuild your barricades. Creating barricades are essential to keeping the waves of zombies from overwhelming your team.

The Nazi zombie gameplay in Call of Duty: World at War looks like a blast, however this game can only be unlocked after beating the single player campaign. The guys at Treyarch challenge you to beat their record of reaching wave 23. I think our readers might be up to the challenge.

    Mike….you’re such a trouble maker. Nice though.

    Game looks more and more impressive. Unfortunately I only have so much money to spend and after LBP, and Far Cry 2 this week, I’m looking at R2 followed by Tomb Raider two weeks later….

  2. SW:

    CoD5 looks very much like CoD4 tho. Fuck, you can even add the tube to weapons, and some of the perks are the same.

  3. phranctoast:

    yeah…but it’s not modern warfare. It takes place during WW2, so the weapons will be very different. (no laser scopes)

    It’s really cool that they managed to keep the Zombie mode a secret for so long. COD is amazing on its own; Zombies can only make it better.

    @Phranctoast – Yeah I know that ;)

    I just have this feeling we’re going to be paying money for the same experience with some new guns. Kinda lame.

    Anywhoos, I’m not purchasing right off the bat. Gotta wait till rest of my clan decides on it, if they all switch over to CoD5 then so be it ill bite and buy it. If not. No CoD5 for me…

    WWII has been overused.

    You know what would have been great? COD6 – The Cronulla Riots. That would have been fun.

    @SW..

    All good. I’m waiting on it because I know my friends getting it for Xmas…and he’s all about not playing games online. He doesn’t want to pay for internet…yada yada yada…and can’t be convinced otherwise. I figure I’ll just borrow his and not return it for a while after he completes the SP portion ;)
