Xbox 360 loyal studio says PS3 has more potential

November 4, 2008

Xbox 360 loyal studio says PS3 has more potential In a surprising interview with the boss of the long-time loyal Xbox 360 studio, Team Ninja, he indicated that the PS3 has much more potential than any other console out there. He also indicated that in general, the PS3 is considered to be the most powerful system by the development community. These remarks may seem incendiary to hardcore Xbox fanboys, but these comments are trivial if you take a long term view of the video game industry.

Team Ninja is responsible for some of the most successful Xbox 360 exclusive titles around, such as the Dead or Alive series, Ninja Gaiden II and Black. According to Gamasutra, Hitoshi Hasegawa, boss of Team Ninja, indicated that the PS3 has potential neither the developers nor the consumers have yet to see. As to why we have yet to see much of this untapped potential, he places the blame on the developers and not the actual hardware itself.

He stated:

For the PlayStation 3, we do not believe that we’ve seen the fullest of its potential from any standpoint: from a developer standpoint, and also a consumer standpoint — and just in products in general.

The developers have been releasing products, but there is a bigger potential. There is greater potential, and we see that possibility the most in the PlayStation 3. It’s going to be up to us developers and Sony to make sure that that does happen.

It sounds as if Hasegawa places the burden of pushing the hardware on the shoulders of the developers. There is no doubt about it, the Xbox 360 is much easier to develop for with its PC style architecture. However, it is well known that the PS3 with its “exotic” architecture is extremely difficult.

He also states:

For any developer that’s been working on all of the platforms that are available today, I think they would agree that the PlayStation 3 is the most powerful system out there.

Also, judging by such games as: Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, Heavy Rain and Killzone 2, the PS3 can push graphics like no other console on the market can. However, this isn’t really all that surprising, considering the billions Sony poured into the development of the Cell processor. You could say it’s almost expected.

However, as I have stated before if you take a long term view of the video game industry, technically superior hardware doesn’t necessarily translate into a successful platform. The Xbox 360 is already on its third year and the PS3 is on its second year. In a few more years Microsoft will be announcing the next Xbox and the PS3 will become irrelevant. Then Sony will announce the PS4 and the next Xbox will become irrelevant, to continue the endless cycle of releasing new hardware.

    @darkwhitehair,

We don’t use login to track statistics.
However, we implemented the login due to the overwhelming request from the readers.

Give us feed back on what issues you have experienced with the login system and we will try to get it figured out.

    Cheers,
    Mike Ferro

I have a comment about the login system, is it me or when i post a comment does it lag behind by a couple of hours or so? Do you guys moderate it?

As everyone knows, the PS3 is slightly better at some things and the XBox 360 is slightly better at others.

Trying to make this appear significant with tales of one or other being much more “powerful” is laughable.

The PS3 for instance is based on an ancient Nvidia 7800/7900 GPU.
The XBox something else equally old.

Neither are anywhere near the edge of tech.

Nevermind all that chatter about a small degree of theoretical difference, if you want something to discuss about the relative merits of those 2 then concentrate on the numbers sold.

Cos not only is the XBox about 100 x easier to develop for it is also the most common system out there = more potential sales for anyone making a game.

The PS3 gang can choose to ignore all this for exaggerated claims re any minor differences but they are the only significant parts to this the people investing money making games care about.

  8. CAD:

Yes I would like to know that question too. Yesterday I posted something and it showed up right away. It was the first time that happened since the login system. I hate the fact my post don’t show up and it tends to make the conversations broken. I Like the new login system but I hate the delay.

  9. kev:

i just think it’s hilarious that EVERYTHING about the ps3 is about “potential”…. not actual performance…

here we are at the 1 year mark and still no sight of the ps3’s “potential”….

oh well…sony did the same hype b.s. with the ps2’s “hidden power”…. of course..it never really existed..

    oh sony fanboys..funniest creatures ever… lol…

  10. Tatsujin:

hidden power? … God of War 1-2 anyone? FF XII anyone? … I forgot what other games took advantage of the system as well.

PS3 is potential and performance. Eff it already, Kev.

  11. phranctoast:

    @Tatsujin.

Shadow of the Colossus is one that comes to mind.

What does 360 users have to look forward to?????

The missing in action Alan wake. *rolls eyes*

  12. Arvis:

What IS Alan Wake anyways? The only people I’ve ever heard mention the game are our 360-loyal friends from the comments here. What is it about? What makes it special?

    -Arvis

  13. darkwhitehair:

All I saw on Alan Wake was a trailer of a guy going into a light house… didnt get anything from that..

Also I think Black was a game that pushed the limits of the Ps2… it looked amazing…

Why the hate kev??? why so much hate???
Youve got Fable 2… youve got Gears 2 coming out… chill out…

WHO HAS SOUL CALIBUR 4 and FIFA 09 here?? I play those most… tried MGO… it was too hard :’(
    Gimme your IDs bitches…

  14. Bourne:

Yes DWH black was amazing. It could compete with some next gen titles now.
You tried MGo and it was too hard? Keep at it, thats the only way you get good. I thought that in the beginning, i got pissed off because i was getting owned so much, but now i love it because i own :)

  15. harry sachz:

Alan Wake is a bit of a mystery, but it’s being made by the same guys that did the Max Payne games, so it’s got a bit of a pedigree.

The word ‘potential’ gets thrown around a lot in reference to the PS3. I had potential at school, I didn’t do any good though. Maybe the PS3 is me personified? haha

  16. darkwhitehair:

    HAHAHAH ZING !! HARRY!!!

I have to bitch a lil about MGO and the new Socom (havent played that)
It seems its a lil too much menu surfing… it took me 1 minute to get into a game (THEN another 4 minutes for the round to end and me to start)
Its a big problem for fat asses like me…

Fifa has a nice online play… one button and it matches you… I like it…

Ohh also bourne… I am so ashamed… but… I still havent finished the first level of MGS4!! OH MY GAWD!!!

    TOO MANY GAMES!!! NEEED TIME!!!

whats your ID.. Ill add you… I got soul calibur 4… come and play me… britches…

Since the singlemuslim.com people wont take you harry… any chance of seeing you in ashley madison?? XD
    You crack me up…

  17. godsman:

Potential could be ANYTHING. If PS3 has a floppy drive, it has “potential” to do other things Xbox cant do. This doesnt mean a floppy drive is a useful feature that developers will use. Theres probably no one that will tap into all of the cell processor’s power

  18. SW:

‘…by the same guys that did the Max Payne games, so it’s got a bit of a pedigree…’

I want to agree, but Max Payne was the player slow mo diving around EVERY corner shooting people in the head. The bullet time was AWESOME, but the game was kind of repetative.

If you ever played the various matrix mods for that game tho lol, fking awesome :) I don’t know why ‘enter the matrix’ was ever made when max payne existed :)

  19. phranctoast:

That was my argument for Haze….Its the same guys that did Godeneye and the Timesplitters franchises. How bad can it be? lol.

Alan Wakes story seems cool (survival horror;not enough of them)
But all I’ve seen is high rez PC renderings.

  20. Johnny Ninja:

As a PS3 only owner… this is really good news. Team Ninja’s games are great. Ninja Gaiden and DOA are two great franchises that have been exclusive to the Xbox for far too long. As far as pushing the PS3 to its limits, I think we will start to see better third party support. It’s been shown that PS3 moves third party software the best.

Also the Log in is a pain. I am actually Barnabee Jones… creating a new user name was easier than trying to retrieve the password.
