Gears of War: EPIC boss wants his mom to play Gears
In an interview, the President of EPIC Games indicated that he wanted to make Gears of War accessible enough for his mom to be able to play it. This may be the best time to talk about this interview considering the launch of the sequel. Gears of War 2 is EPIC Game’s latest entry in the franchise, which keeps the old formula while making the story more appealing to non-hardcore gamers.
In an interview with GI.biz, Michael Capps, President of EPIC Games, indicated in an interview that he wants to make the Gears of War franchise accessible to a much wider audience.
He said:
Yes. I really want to be able to have my girlfriend or my mom play this game. My girlfriend’s a gamer, but she’s a Nintendo gamer – this isn’t her sort of thing at all.
We want to make it accessible … So trying to take a game that’s such a niche hardcore title, but open up the controls and the story to make it more widely appealing – so far it’s worked pretty well.
Capps also indicated this is their step towards the latest trend of social gaming. With the release of games like LittleBigPlanet (LBP), which is said to epitomize the spirit of Web 2.0, many believe that social games may be the future of the video game industry.
Gears of War 2 does not have the level of social gaming LBP may have, but the game is made much more accessible than the previous installment by crafting a story that rivals that of most summer blockbuster action flicks. The story is not as intricate as many of the shooters out there which could turn casual players off.
The controls are simple and precision isn’t as important as some of the other shooters on the market such as Far Cry 2. Practically anyone can play Gears of War as long as they understand the basic principle of duck and shoot.
Head on over to GI.biz for the rest of very interesting interview with Michael Capps. Also, keep an eye out for our review of Gears of War 2.

I consider myself a ‘hardcore’ gamer and the story is the only thing making me want to continue playing.
Its had its fun moments so far, but other than that it feels like the first one which didn’t make me jump for joy.

@SW
Agreed. The story is the reason why I bought it. But the gameplay and almost everything else feels the same.
But having sequels being the same isnt necessarily (spelling?) a bad thing is it? If it was successful before, why make it too different?

I want to play with his mom and girlfriend too!

Well it was a fun game.
But it annoyed me how it had the ‘2 minute ending’ syndrome. Give me a REAL ending! >:(

‘Practically anyone can play Gears of War as long as they understand the basic principle of duck and shoot.” – right…oh…except for the roady-run, the grenade tossing, chainsaw fighting, and flying while shooting…..
you guys are hilarious… lol….

“Gears of War 2 does not have the level of social gaming LBP may have…” really? then why is GeOW 2 outselling LBP and has waaaaaaay more users online? interesting…

arvis – i know how you feel. Splinter Cell spoiled me against MGS games. MGS just feel very “meh” in comparison. Altho i don’t know why you would compare two seperate genres…

Kev,
I wasn’t comparing Gears to MGS. Rather, the length of the story/cutscenes. It was intended to be “light-hearted.” Do you know what “light-hearted” means? It means not taking everything so damn seriously.

i wasn’t taking it seriously… i just think comparing seperate genres is a joke. especially when one (mgs) has more cutscenes than gameplay….

Splinter Cell Double Agent SUCKED. Are you serious? There is no possible way you can compare that piece of trash to MGS4.
