Monster Hunter to be first MMO like PSP game ever
Fans stateside have been anxiously waiting for Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G on the PSP. Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G is the most popular PSP title out in Japan. It managed to sell over 2 million units upon release. This is quite a feat for a portable game. The Monster Hunter series have always had elements similar to that of an MMORPG. However, the United States version of the game is said to be more MMO-like than the Japanese version.
The main appeal of the PSP game is its cool co-op integration feature. Users can connect to each other’s PSP and quest together in the world of Monster Hunter. Since the vast majority of the populous resides within massive cities in Japan, walking up to friends and queuing up a game is not a problem.

However, in the States you would have to hop in the car drive about 20 minutes to get to a friend’s house to queue up a game of Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G, which is quite inconvenient. According to the latest issue of EGM, Capcom is well aware of this hindrance. Apparently the online issue was one of the chief reasons why Capcom did not released the Monster Hunter game in the US.
However, with the addition of the PS3-to-PSP ad-hoc infrastructure mode, Capcom will be utilizing this new feature to make Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G more MMO-like. Users will be able to connect to the PS3 network and find friends to quest together with. The new ad-hoc mode will also support voice chat over the PSN network through the PSP.

According to Capcom, Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G is said to have lowered productivity within Japan on release day. It will not have that kind of affect here in the States, but I am sure it will still sell like hot hakes. There is no solid release date for the US, but according to EGM it should be out before this holiday.

The screens look amazing. I haven’t played any of the Monster Hunters yet. I’ll have to check it out.
Given that this series is mega popular in Japan, I’m really surprised that they moved the console version from the PS3 to the crappy Wii. Is a MMO even possible on the Wii?
