LittleBigPlanet developer to go PS3 exclusive

LittleBigPlanet developer to go PS3 exclusive There is a rumor doing the rounds that Media Molecule has agreed to develop three more PS3 exclusive titles. Media Molecule is a third party studio so they can actually make games for any platform they choose as long as the studio owns the IP.

According to Playstationbeyond, apparently coming off the critical reception to LittleBigPlanet, Sony has extended a three game deal to Media Molecule to develop exclusively on the PS3. After all the excellent reviews and press regarding LittleBigPlanet, the studio is definitely a hot commodity on the market.

I wouldn’t put it past Microsoft to even try to get some sort of deal with Media Molecule for the Xbox 360 as well. However, it is surprising that a third party studio would sign up to develop multiple exclusive titles with the high costs of development these days.

I am actually more surprised that Sony has not bought out the studio already. Sony is known for buying out third party studios they have worked closely with on first party titles. Evolution Studios is a recent developer the company has purchased after Motorstorm sold close to four million units.

LittleBigPlanet has been estimated to have sold around a million units so far. The game is predicted to experience a sales uptake during the holiday season with a massive marketing campaign lined up by Sony. I am curious as to what other titles Media Molecule may currently have on their drawing board at this moment.

The executives over at Sony have been singing about social gaming all year long and now it looks like they might have found their poster child. Microsoft for years have been whipping Viva Piñata around as the company’s poster child for casual gaming, it looks like it is Sony’s turn to do some whipping of the Sack Boy.

  2. Ivan_PSP:

That’s why i love Sony they buy every good game studio that’s why PS3 has the best exclusives.

Eurgh, you know Microsoft will pay Media Molecule to make a game called LargeSmallGlobe with the protragonist being a sackgirl who gets to create her own levels, but since this is Microsoft she will have the ability to call an airstrike on other sackpeople and has access to an arsenal of weapons to please xbots

I am very surprised that Sony has not outright bought the company. Media Molecule is an infinitely better developer than Evolution Studios. A three game deal is great and all, but having the company loyal to Sony forever is much better.

I know that they already have Rag Doll Kung-Fu in the works for the PSN, so that might be the second title there.

So in 3 more years we’ll expect another MM game? Hopefully they’ll learn their lesson and create a game that appeals to the major demographic of gamers.

The casual gamers are the major demographic……

  7. Barnabe Jones:

The game is very unique in that it appeals to both casual and hardcore. If you want to pick up and play a few levels you can. If you want to spend hours using the tools to create you own levels, you can do that also.

Most casual gamers picked up a Wii, not a PS3. So that is not the PS3’s major demographic. And the sales figures show that.

  9. Barnabe Jones:

I would agree with that. And I would also add “casual gamers” are less inclined to buy the most expensive system.
