Microsoft time release of NXE to avoid warranty costs?

November 19, 2008

Microsoft time release of NXE to avoid warranty costs? Microsoft just launched the highly anticipated New Xbox Experience (NXE) today. With such a large scale endeavor there is bound to be issues executing the latest update. However, reports are pouring in of glitches with the new interface. Some are even reporting the dreaded Red Ring of Death on their system.

According to one site, Gaming Confidential, is accusing Microsoft of timing the launch of the NXE (Nov. 19) with when the warranty would run out for launch owners, in order to avoid fixing any launch units that may receive the RRoD.

Gaming Confidential indicates that a trusted Microsoft Rep. have said:

The slick move by Microsoft here is that it’s releasing the update on the 19th, just a couple of days after the extended warranty period for launch Xbox 360s end. The owners of these units are headed for some pretty tense times in the weeks to come.

This definitely sounds more like wild speculation rather than fact.  I didn’t purchase an Xbox 360 on launch day, so I can’t say if the three year warranty would have expired before the 19th or not.

Regardless if this is true or not, the NXE update is causing many gamers to brick their console with the RRoD. A quick survey of the official Xbox forum shows a history of threads created since early today proving that many users are experiencing the dreaded RRoD on their Xbox 360.

Good old Major Nelson updated the blog to indicate that they are well aware of the issues and working hard to resolve them. He says, “we are aware some of you may be experiencing a few hiccups along the way.”

I have been playing around with the NXE and really haven’t experienced any issues such as the RRoD, freezing and DVD drive issues, but on the other hand I am on my fourth Xbox 360 so I have all the latest chipsets in my unit. The one major annoyance I have noticed is the lag. Everything you do on the NXE is crawling, its slow to a point where I would rather pull up the mini-blades and forgo the NXE all together.

Let us all hope that Microsoft can get all the issues ironed out before it starts to affect our holiday season gaming.

    All working good here too.

    Its the 360′s PS3 2.40 :)

  2. harry sachz:

I’m not experiencing any issues whatsoever. The lag you’re talking about is non existent. What % of these posters are PS3 trolls?

  3. phranctoast:

They are all the same people that had the original RROD. It’s all a lie. The 360 is the most perfect system in existence. Stupid Sony fanboys with their FUD trying to take down the awesomely cool mega corporation that is Microsoft.

  4. me too:

Sony has the best plan, just never release your interface updates. That way they can always be better than the competition and never have to go to the trouble of actually getting them to work.

Im suspecting foul play… maybe the same assholes *cough* Ivan *cough* who gave Gears 2 a low score in meta critic is making these stupid claims…

Then again… its not like RROD is unheard of… then again… IT COULD BE A MASSIVE CONSPIRACY!!!

Get your tin foil hats out boys… we in for a looong battle…

Blorge is missing some great news stories. I like the conspiracy on how Columbia pictures isn’t offered on Netflix for Xbox subscribers within NXE, since it’s a Sony movies Studio. Yet those same people fail to mention that Sony Pictures is on there…lol

The black helicopters will soon ferret out the Sony posers eh? Sheesh, you xbots are hilarious. Yeah, its all ps3 hans reporting these problems.

  8. CAD:

Even if there is problems it is to be expected. You can’t come with something totally new and fresh and expect it to be wrinkle free. Also this is the first time in gaming history that has happened so I don’t think it should be hated on because we all know Microsfot will fix the issues. I applaud the new NXE system and it will be great when all the wrinkles are ironed out. I personally did not have much issues except one. I found that after coming out of viewing a friend from the friends list it frooze on my for a little bit but it came up in a few seconds. That was the biggest annoyance I had yesterday. One friend said he was getting error messages when trying to download a video. Overall I loved it and the Party system is just awesome. I can’t wait for it to expand.

“we all know Microsfot will fix the issues.”

To be fair, Windows users know all about microsoft’s ‘fixing’, the ‘fixing’ that happens week after week after month after year ;)

Altho i don’t think this is purely an MS thiing. Time was, a console was a rock solid bastion of bug free-ness. These days its PC style ‘release and patch later’ mentality. Consoles are starting to suck :(

Heh, check out Harry flying wildly into desperate damage control mode.

Harry, I was around when 2.40 for the PS3 was launched, and nobody said it was lies reported by Xbots. We all just waited to see if it was a widespread problem. It wasn’t, it was dealt with, and then it went away. The same will happen with NXE. Just don’t worry about it if it is working for you. If it’s not a big problem, it will eventually get worked out.

    @ Chris,

What damage control? Mine is working 100% fine.

Where’s Kev at, he would give us the answers we seek. I need him here to spew his opinion and thoughts into fact. Usually he would jump all over blorge for this article.

  13. darkwhitehair:

you guys dont get it… the 360s RAM has more powah… its GPU is superior… it has more games… therefore… NXE Rules… The Playstation 3s GPU suckz monkey balls… Halo 2 had better graphics than MGS 4…
    Arvis youre a PS3 fanboy… Ivan is a big poopie head… I am awesome… cus I get paid to write this crap…

    PEACE!!!

    oh shit… I forgot I wasnt using kevs account… damn…

    LMAO

In addition to the RROD fiasco and the fact that if you play your 360 standing up it will destroy your game… the disc drive has a high tendency to stop working. The extended warranty was a nice gesture… but I have a friend who when through 4 fixed 360s, his warranty ran out and the disc drive stopped working. Now he has a big, ugly, white paper weight. The warranty should be extended for all users indefinitely.

  16. Wylie:

    CAD,

I do agree, problems would be expected. However if its true that MS purposely waited to release it until after the warranties started running out you should have an issue with that. I don’t know if they did, but it really wouldn’t surprise me. If it’s true than I guess MS forgot to look out for their customers this time huh?

  17. Arvis:

    Wylie,

Yeah, they “forgot.” *wink wink nudge nudge*

CAD… first time in gaming history what has happened??? when a company has released an update?? There is nothing REVOLUTIONARY about this… its Evolutionary… theres a difference…

I found it weird that the same guys who bitched about PS3 games installing on the HDD are the guys who are happy to install them on the 360… filthy hippocrites…

nonetheless… Id get netflix after getting a 360… install in the HDD… now… gotta get the console…
